1,342 DUI busts in Labor Day enforcement period, nine alcohol-related deaths

During the Labor Day enforcement period related to the Colorado Department of Transportation's "Heat is On" campaign, law enforcers arrested a staggering 1,342 people for impaired driving.

Surprisingly, this figure represents a slight improvement over similar stretches in 2011 and 2012. But another number is even more disturbing.

At this writing, CDOT estimates that nine alcohol-related fatalities took place over the same span.

This year's Labor Day enforcement period ran from August 16 to September 3, with the 1,342 impaired-driving-arrests total compiled from data supplied by the Colorado State Patrol and other agencies across the state.

The sum is down from 2012, when 1,440 DUI arrests were made between August 17 and September 3. In 2011, the total was estimated at 1,442 DUI arrests.

Not that anyone's celebrating the slight dip, especially in light of what a CDOT release describes as "nine alcohol-related fatalities preliminarily reported during this period." Nor will such efforts be dialed back anytime soon.

"This year's Labor Day crackdown had more than 100 law enforcement agencies protecting Coloradans from impaired drivers," said Scott Hernandez, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, in a statement. "We will once again be ramping up our efforts surrounding the upcoming holiday season as we continue to stress the importance of avoiding impaired driving of any kind -- alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs and illegal drugs."

It would be nice to see a breakdown of those numbers by intoxicant and suspect age.

The population of Colorado is 3 million, half of them don't drive--so the number of licensed drivers is 1,500,000.  The Poletzi issued about 1300 DUIs this period---That's about a hair more than 1 per every 1000 Colorado drivers.

I could easily believe that at best they ticketed about one tenth of the drunk drivers on the road this weekend as I could easily believe 1% of the drivers on the road are drunk.

I could be wrong though, but I'll bet I'm conservative.

This problem will go away in twenty years, computer control doesn't drink.  The occasional DUIs will be given to cyclists.

Stupid people never drink and drive you put everyone on the road including yourself in danger but as it tends to happen so often the bastard who was driving lives and the family of four dies. Anyway what is cheaper a cab or a DUI think about it.

I remember when I was on my pedicab at an intersection when a kid had his friend over his cars speakers tell him about the DUI checkpoint. That kid was already in the line to get caught. He tried to get away but I looked at him and told him your already too late. Serves them all right. You deserve no sympathy when you make the decision to drink and drive. It is that simple.

Hopefully you will follow up with some statistics about the MJ vs. Alcohol arrests, what substances were involved with the nine fatalities, etc. It is news worthy and we would like to know that stuff. Especially with it being a hot topic here in Colorado.

It's crazy that this is still an issue today. The damage done by drinking and driving is astonishing, but the money the government makes off of it is staggering as well, and that's what keeps them from shutting the door on DUI's. It can be done, they just don't want to lose the revenue it creates for them and theirs.

I wonder how many marijuana related deaths there were this Labor Day weekend? How about ZERO! Does this mean the pedophiles over at SMART Colorado are gonna be out 'saving' the kids from the perils of alcohol now that this alarming trend is being reported? NOT!.....They are too busy cruising the playgrounds and elementary schools looking for tail.....

Obvious follow-up question to this comment - "How many of the 1342 impaired driving busts from this Labor Day were attributed to alcohol vs marijuana vs prescription drugs vs illegal drugs?"
