Photos: Jenny Kush, cannabis-scene star, killed in wrong-way crash on I-25

The Denver Police Department has not officially released the name of the woman killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 25 over the weekend -- but she's been identified by her friends and loved ones as Jenny Kush, a colorful, outspoken and much adored member of the local cannabis community. As those close to Kush make plans to remember her at an event tomorrow night (full details below), the woman charged with causing her death -- Rebecca Maez, 27 -- remains in custody on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.

Kush was both an outspoken cannabis-reform advocate and the host of Sexpot Radio, which aired live twice weekly on iCannabisRadio.com.

The shows were captured on video -- there are dozens of them available at the first link above -- and are true to the program's name; they feature sexual advice from a distinctively weed-friendly perspective. In the ones we sampled, Kush comes across as bright, full of life and not self-conscious in the slightest about celebrating what she clearly saw as two of the most joyous experiences anyone can have.

The same tone emanates from her still-online Facebook page, which features a slew of memorable photos. Here's one example....

On Friday night, Kush and her boyfriend attended a concert in Denver. But shortly after hitting the road, tragedy struck.

What happened?

Continue for more about Jenny Kush's death and the upcoming celebration of her life, including more photos and a video.

My question is how did Maez end up southbound in the HOV while Kush and her boyfriend were northbound? Were gates not closed in time? What else happened to cause the loss of a loved one? What happened to cause such turmoil and hurt in two families (Kush's and Maez's)? Why is the Westword having the most reporting in the matter and only posting the same material?

Now that she's gone she's seeing what her life was REALLY about.

Why doesn't the title say "Jenny Kush killed by drunk driver"?!?! Smh

The headline should specify that it was not her fault. Every single article I have encountered leads the reader to believe that SHE was somehow the cause or that her being involved in the cannabis-scene was the reason.

It is way beyond time that the phrase "alcohol and drugs" be either eliminated or corrected to read "alcohol and OTHER drugs".

Alcohol is the most dangerous and damaging of ALL drugs.
Yes, it certainly is a drug.

The commonly uninformed public is constantly bombarded with all the scare news about meth and other drugs while, in truth, the problems caused by the users of ALL other drugs are minscule all together when compared to those caused by alcohol.

So, if you're sitting on your bar stool dissing all those evil drug users and thinking I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm clean & sober for 30+ years.

You're way more likely to act out angrily and fight when you're drunk than if you had toked up.

BTW-They incorrectly pronounced the killer's name as if it is spelled "Mays".
It is correctly pronounced "Mayez".

How many people have been killed by wrong-way drunks in the HOV lane?  It seems to be so commonplace that this story barely surfaced in the local media.  Is the HOV lane on I-25 properly designed?  Is access to it limited by any physical barriers?  Did Maez crash through gates in order to get into the HOV lane heading south, and if not, why not?  Does CDOT not bother to lower them over Labor Day weekend?  While Maez is plainly culpable, it seems likely that CDOT acted as her accomplice.

Jenny was the mother of four children, and other victims of Colorado's out-of-control alcoholic drivers have survivors too.  While our idiot lawmakers obsess about cannabis and continue to give heed to self-agrandizing liars desperate to keep it illegal, Colorado's serious problems with alcohol are ignored.  How can these imbeciles give a single thought to cannabis while alcohol's horrific toll continues?

its the government trying to get rid of advocates for marijuana legalization. And if it wasnt, marijuana certainly does not cause someone to drive out of control to that extreme level like alcohol would￸l

um... why does this sound set up? all the decent young voices; voices of a generation of degenerate, uneducated by choice, and lazy pukes that aren't deserving of the air we breathe; that manage to not only try, but prove to be worthy beyond their age, but worthy beyond their own generation, seem to be "accidentally" killed in odd happenstance.

RIP. headline is misleading though. It makes it seem if a pothead was driving the wrong way when it was the other persons fault... Was the other driver drunk?

Jenny was my passenger when we got hit.  We were at the (hed) P.E. show and were totally sober.  The darkness you feel right before the nightmare begins IS real.  Now I'm trapped in a nightmare that many have had to experience, thanks to an uninsured drunk driver.  If anyone ever sees someone getting into a car that is intoxicated, it is your responsibility to help stop them......in any way you can.  If we are a real community, we would try to prevent stupid shit like this!!
It is beyond time that cannabis, a CLEARLY SFAER CHOICE, stops being criminalized when 0 deaths come from it, while there are bars, liquor stores and other alcohol outlets EVERYWHERE!  This is embarrassing as a country and as a community of humans!

It's a sad irony that a drunk driver would plow into a Marijuana proponent. b. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.

RIP Jenny and my condolences to your family and friends! It's not about the liquor, the drugs, ..it's about the people that do foolish things that hurt, kill, end lives, change lives...in such a horrid, quick manner....People kill people..because of the choices they make. Enjoy life...for..once again...another reminder...of how short it is..and how in the blink of an eye..we can lose wonderful people...loved ones, family, friends...due to human error...bad decisions..carelessness....

Very sad... how can a car get into the HOV lane and go the wrong way?

So terrible. Didn't know her but I can tell by the article and the way her friends speak of her she was a great person and obviously much too young to die so tragically. Stay the cause and never forget what she was fighting for! RIP

@Anna McCollom In the last year or so, IIRC, there was an RTD BUS that wound up going the wrong way inn an HOV lane on I-25 in broad daylight.  It would seem that something is wrong.  Not really sure how any driver gets on a limited access highway going the wrong way, but it seems to happen quite frequently. Seems to usually involve large doses of alcohol, however...

@Jason Smith Sorry if there was any confusion, Jason. The other driver, Rebecca Maez, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, and she's been arrested before on that charge. Thanks for posting.

@Jason Smith

From the article, the other driver was intoxicated. Jenny was a PASSENGER in a car traveling in the right direction on the highway.

@iamthenewrevolution I wish everyone would use her name. The name we shared growing up. She was my best friend, my protector. I am glad however she was with someone she loved. Yes you all knew her as Jenny Kush but that is not the name her family knows her by.

@Timothy Tdm WrathBliss M I get what ur saying but it actually IS about the alcohol....Ever seen a drunk chick dance naked on a table at a party? Ever seen a chick do the same thing sober? Alcohol alters behavior in a violent and reckless way...Cannabis not so much....
