Earlier this week, in response to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock's proposal to arrest or fine marijuana smokers whose weed could be smelled next door, we posted our suggestions for five Colorado places that smell worse.

Then, when we shared the list on Westword's Facebook page, we asked our friends for their picks -- and they held their nose and came through big time. Below, count down our readers' photo-illustrated, extremely aromatic top ten.

Number 10:

state.park.restroom.flickr.jpg

"Vault toilets in State Parks statewide."

Number 9:

commerce.city.factory.screen.capture.jpg
"The area of NE Denver/Commerce City, the combined smells of the oil refinery plus the Michelin re-treading place, plus Eaton Metals (all in the same neighborhood) is enough to make anyone ill. Pot would be a great improvement."

Continue to keep counting down the top ten stinky Colorado places according to you.

I think it's included in the NE Denver/commerce city one. We live in Swansea right in the middle of Purina and the refinery and such, it's brutal. Especially on hot days.

Now, on to something positive. The Top Ten List of BEST Smelling Places in Colorado: I'll start with a few. 1. The brat/polish sausage vendor cart at 19th & Wynkoop on game day. 2. Fresh cut grass at City Park. 3. The sulfur (yup, sulfur) smoke drifting between the downtown buildings after the 4th of July fireworks at Coors Field and Civic Center Park. 4. The lilac bushes around the city neighborhoods in May. 5. The local downtown breweries when they're making a new batch of beer. 6. The smell of rain in Denver after a long dry spell. 7. Sautéed garlic and onions always coming from the apt building at 32nd/Osage (really). 8... 9.... 10...

WestTurd isn't on the list despite the endless complaints by butthurt readers and commenters.

The Purina dog food plant doesn't smell too bad, I've actually drove by it before and thought it smelled kind of yummy lol. Greeley for sure smells the worst in my opinion.

Not nearly as many times as whiny butthurt commenters keep bitching about repeated Lamebook posts.

The Jefferson County Republican Headquarters. The dog food factory smells like roses compared to the bullshit foaming from the mouths of rabid wing nuts.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this article? That Purina factory has been giving people serious problems and it is much more than stinky.

The south side of the 2650 block of West 3rd Avenue, just west of Bryant in Denver just SW of the I-25/US-6 interchange, is a steady and potent location of significant stench and odor.  The stench of sewage is perennially overpowering and staggering, and the ground vegetation along the long warehouse side of A & H Finishing Products grows like it would in a jungle with the ample saturated soil lurking just below the surface.  The plume of sewage probably extends beneath the buildings for quite a distance from its source beneath 3rd Avenue.

Why isn't the sewage treatment plant on hwy 58 coming out of Golden on the list?

The combo smell of Zimmerman Metals and The Wonderbread factory(yeast and metal coking at the same time is pretty nauseating) off I-25 and 58th.

Number 6 = Purina Factory.  Westword scared to get sued for a mention of Purina?

How did you leave off the Purina dog food factory????? Depending on the wind it'll literally make you vomit in your car while driving past it on i70. The Coors plant in Golden smells worse than a sewage treatment plant...OK I see what's going on here; you picked non-commercial smell-offenders in order not to single out and piss off any larger businesses in the Denver area...safe/lame move (probably forced by your editor) but misses the biggest offenders for sure.

Now you have a general idea of what areas to avoid. Denver is still a great city.

walk down any back alley behind Broadway ..or many of em downtown..you'll find homeless people shittin & pissin all night long. I used to own a business on broadway/bayaud & there was a new pile of shit in the ally every day... Would have welcomed the smell of weed... not to mention the homeless sex & crack use in the ally's ...wake up & smell the shit Hancock... My middle fingers salute you. Take some of the weed tax money & make some nice public restrooms.
