Reader: Colorado Springs residents hate taxes, unless they're for them

Yesterday, we shared a Washington Post-created list of the ten cities hardest hit by the federal shutdown as measured by the percentage of government jobs in the overall workforce -- and taking the top slot in the entire country was Colorado Springs. This ranking garnered some sharp commentary from a number of readers. Here's an example.

Doug Hubka writes:

Sort of ironic that it is Colorado Springs. The same town that abhors government spending and taxes, (unless it is for them).

Yep sounds right remember back in 2008 when the city asked for a 3 cent sales tax increase the people voted it down. It ended up closing city nursing stations, limiting funds for police and fire departments. Crime spiked way up and there were waits up to 48 hours for a police officer to respond to residents homes.

To be fair, a lot of it is probably defense related, which isn't ideological hypocrisy for anyone the Right. That said, there are somewhere between a few and a lot of Republican voters actually sucking off the teat of government in potentially ideologically hypocritical ways depending on how deep you probe their particular ideology. That is, just because someone is a Republican because religion doesn't mean they agree with a fiscal conservative's ideology vis a vis accepting government handouts any more than a fiscal conservative like myself agrees with the religious conservative on issues like gay marriage, abortion, or the war on drugs. If more folks on the left were capable of understanding people as individuals instead of one big group think hive mind and making incoherent prejudiced generalizations, the world would be a better place.

The only selfish ones in this state are the ones who just raised my electric bill by 35% (along with all other "rural" Coloradans) and now want to raise my income tax come November. Cause you know, I've got sooooo much money just lying around. Damn selfish progressives and their dumbass socialism can't leave me alone. They won't be happy until I'm on the street myself, begging for my own handout from Big Brother.

Yeah, big govt can get out of our lives! Unless we're suckling the big brother teat; then we need them to stay.. So we ignore voters and ban retail marijuana. Infinite wisdom Colorado Springs. :/
