Reader: I moved out of Denver because the gang violence was too much for me

jefferson.county.suv.shooting.205x205.jpg
A lot of reaction to our post about a Jefferson County couple whose night in Denver ended with a rain of gunfire from cars that may or may not have contained "gang-bangers." Among the more memorable posts was this one, from a reader who wasn't surprised by the incident or the description of the perpetrators.

Jonathan Noa writes:

Gang violence is a serious problem in MOST cities in the states. In my own two years in Denver, I was personally introduced to gang violence in 4 different experiences. Luckily my part was more or less as a bystander. I moved out of the city because it was TOO much for me. But i still love Denver and I still love living close. It is a bigger issue of the dangers of gangs. Unfortunately more police doesn't equal less gangs. For example. LA. It can only be combated by offering people economic means for themselves. The same people mixed in with crime and gangs are the same ones who have worked countless meaningless jobs. The public use of marijuana is a separate issue, but I admit it smells better than the breath of politicians right now.

I think you all need some perspective. We all have our own viewpoint and experiences in the places we live, during our lives. Anyone of us can run into the criminal element at any time on any given day. My hometown was the Murder Capitol of the country for over 6 years straight.  l grew up there got married there, and my wife was murdered there. I am still here. I moved from Gary, Indiana to Chicago for a better life and found it.

We can sit here and second guess, criticize, correct grammar and spelling, and point fingers at what is or isn't the worst place to live. I just read a story about how the United States is the MOST corrupt country in the world to live in. There seems to be an underpinning of dishonesty and bullsht in this country. All my life I grew up listening to people trying to figure out how to cheat on taxes. Damn near, EVERYONE.

Now I am worried about my grandson living on the streets of Denver and have no clue what to do about it, as he thinks he knows what is best for him. I hope he is right and doesn't fall into the gang mentality, but that is a very real possibility.

Every town and city has their problems, and that includes the police departments as well. There will always be crooked cops and I read about a half a dozen or so a week. That does not mean they are all like that, but damn, if we don't figure out what the heck the ruling class in this country, is doing with ever more complex laws to screw it up, we are done for, and this country WILL collapse.

I grew up off south federal right next to the Kentucky projects I'm now 35. And I feel absolutely blessed to not be killed, mamed (horribly) or in jail. I have seen so many violent and criminal things in this city. However I think Denver is generally very safe. I do think that wealthier people from other cities really have no place to even comment whether they live here or not. I currently live in a "bad" part of Vegas(xtreamly safe city too) & I would never write about how there is no crime here Cus Im not scared to walk the street. Its almost as if you rich white people from the suburbs take pride in the fact that some parts of your native city are absolute s**t. But when u live it and see it and feel it daily you would see how idiotic some of your posts are(this goes out to about 90% of the responses here).

Oh please! Reader must have just been paranoid! I lived in Denver just 3 years ago... it was never as bad as this "reader" makes it out to be! Denver is an awesome place to live and is NOT what his reader is making it out to be. I had moved to Los Angeles 3 years ago... it's worse than Denver any ol' day, and yet I never experienced any over-the-top gang activity here either. Reader, you don't know what violent gang activity is! Sheeeesh!

I live outside of Denver in Lakewood, since 1999. I currently live barely one block from the Denver Border in Lakewood. I had no idea there were even gangs there anymore. News to me. There was a lot of gang activity when I was younger, I didn't know it was going on now.

Hell, the podunk town of Dayton, Ohio is more dangerous and has larger gangs than Denver. While Denver is no utopia it is amazingly safe here, considering how large the city is.

I know, right? I can barely sleep at night with all the gun shots. Dude, everyone's too high out here to be violent. My eyes are rolling so hard, I just gave myself vertigo.

Lived in Denver most of my life, didn't know what a bad neighborhood was until I moved to one in Las Vegas. Makes Denver look cupcake, and wish I was back in the mile high city!

To the westword. you have taken what i said WAY out of context. maybe you should put my WHOLE COMMENT up so that what i say is not mistaken. as i remember i made two comments on your post that had NOTHING to do with me thinking denver is a crime ridden city. you inadvertantly smeared my otherwise good name

Jonathan Noa

How many of you have said that you have lived in much harder places. did you perhaps move out because of bad personal experiences. does that make you an idiot moron racist or a whimp? denver is by far the hardest place i have ever lived. but it is also the ONLY city i ever lived in. before or after. and i wouldnt live in the SAFEST city in america because of what i learned. i prefer small towns. but i never compared denvers crime to that of any other major city

I was called racist a moron and scared. ANYONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS ME WOULD NOT SAY ONE OF THESE THINGS. I have personally spoken out against racism even today and yesterday. my iq is 149 and i will meet the whole lot of you somewhere and show you the level i am scared. the one instance i was not a bystander it was three on one and they were the ones who got handed. all because they wanted 400 dollars of mine. they landed one sucker punch. one. three on one. i held my ground. i am afraid of public restrooms and the poo coming out of your mouth reminds me of a bathroom.

And i had just related denver to rome or nyc and what they used to be. art and like minds. so much for that. you have no compassion. exept like two of you. so much for that

I was saying that it was an example of a bigger nationwide problem. more cops doesnt equal less gangs. the only way to better the situation is to give people a real paying job. give them a chance make denver safer. and you can say what you want but crime is nonexistent in my town.

Jonathan Noa

You are pathetic! i have never run from anything. moron. here i am not running. i am a real person. and i stand up ALL day to smarter and stronger than you. who is the weak one who picks on people anonymously.

I AM THE READER. THEY MISSED THE POINT IN MY ARGUMENT. SO B4 YOU CALL SOMEONE AN IDIOT. THEY TOOK WHAT I SAID OUT OF CONTEXT. Look at my comments in their original post against gang violence. i SAID besides rape and car thieft it is one of the safest cities. i personally had 4 bad circumstances hn dealing with gang violence. luckily as a bystander. i love denver and still live close. you call me an idiot. i call you ignorant. having little or no knowledge

Worthless article that does nothing but drive fear into tourists and relocation transplants. Denver is the only city I've ever felt safe simply walking around in. It's not Jersey, Atlanta, Detroit, New Orleans... It's Denver.

i'm just picturing now, in my head, what this writer does when they go to the "big city" of Denver...."got your fanny pack? whistle? OOOH look at the those tall skycrapers" Culture yourself and maybe you'll have more perspective on this "gang" (haha) issue in Denver.
