Gun control report: 15 percent of mass shootings happened in "gun-free" zones

Between January 2009 and September 2013, there were nearly two mass shootings per month in the U.S., according to a new report by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The incidents described in the report include the July 2012 shooting at the Century 16 theater in Aurora, which left twelve dead and seventy wounded.

The report (which is on view below) contains some interesting findings, including that 67 percent of mass shootings happened in private homes, with only 15 percent occurring in public "gun-free" zones.

"Contrary to rhetoric, gun-free zones are not the problem," Mayors Against Illegal Guns's communications director Erika Soto Lamb concludes in a statement.

Other noteworthy statistics from the report, which uses the FBI's definition of a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people were killed with a gun:

  • In 57 percent of cases, the shooter killed a spouse or other family member.
  • In 11 percent of cases, concerns about the shooter's mental health had been brought to the attention of a medical professional, school official or legal authority.
  • Assault weapons or high-capacity magazines were used in 15 percent of the incidents. But those incidents were among the most deadly, with an average of 14.4 people shot.
  • The shooter committed suicide in 43 percent of the incidents.
  • In 14 percent of the shootings, law enforcement or military officers were targeted in the attack or killed or injured while responding to it.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is among the most vocal national gun-control groups and actively campaigned against the recent recall of Colorado senators John Morse and Angela Giron, prompted by the lawmakers' support of firearms-control bills.

Below, read the group's entire report, which includes descriptions of 93 mass shootings.

This article is the exact reason why Second Amendment supporters turn a deaf ear to the Gun Control advocates.  It's white noise meant to confuse the issue with meaningless statistics.  The mass shootings I believe most of us can agree, would be limited to those shootings where the shooters lone intent is to kill as many people as possible - strangers and acquaintances alike - where a plan is in place to accomplish the task.

This is not the case in most domestic violence shootings, where rage is the symptom of the violence.  This is not the case with gang activity - like a drive by, where the intent is to kill one or two rival gang members and the others are just "collateral damage."

Numbers, as we all know, can be twisted anyway you want.  But for someone to write this article in such a one-sided, ask no questions, do no research kind of way is amateurish at best.

It's time to give up the gun control fight and start working towards fixing the symptoms of gun violence - Identifying and helping the mentally ill.  Unemployment.  Drugs.  Poverty.  The loss of the family unit and others.  Until then, thanks, but I will keep my guns to protect me and mine.

Just my opinion...  http://newgunnerjournal.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-question-we-should-be-asking-about.html

John Lott has already picked apart how MAIG has creatively packaged their  findings.

Some unique points are that all of the data collected from the shootings would have to be individually researched. Most news articles, and police reports do not state if it is, or is not a gun free zone. So, we must ask what is the criteria in establishing a gun free zone?

"Assault weapons or high-capacity magazines were used in 15 percent of the incidents. But those incidents were among the most deadly, with an average of 14.4 people shot."

Spin alert...all long guns combined, including mean-looking guns, are used in fewer homicides than knives, according to FBI statistics.

"The shooter committed suicide in 43 percent of the incidents."

And just like in one of the stories published today, he was considered a "victim." So "mass shootings" could be as few as three people, whereas if you want to kill a LOT of people, you go where no law-abiding person has a gun.

Has anyone compared the body count of those mass shootings in "gun free zones" with those in other locations?  This article claims that 15% of mass shootings (4 or more killed by one killer) are in gun free zones, but what if we look at the ones where 8 or more are killed, or 10, etc.  My theory is that regardless of why each killer targets the specific location, those mass killers who kill the most people are the ones who happen to choose gun free zones in which to do their killing.

There is no such thing a a gun free zone.

This is a losing issue for Democrats. Legal Gun owners aren't the criminals. It's thug hoodlums with already illegal guns! I was raised with guns and while I'd NEVER do something hillbilly stupid, like take it inside a Starbuck's, Person protection devices like a loaded gun can save your life!

What percent of populated places are "gun free" and what percent is not? We need that information to make an informed opinion.

"Contrary to rhetoric, gun-free zones are not the problem,"

Yet there are only 14 mass murders listed as "not a gun-free zone".

Since the federal ban expired in September 2004, murder and overall violent crime rates have fallen.Yet this group spends large amounts of money each year claiming military look-alike guns and their standard magazines should be banned...Again.

If you believe that the AR is too dangerous to own then there is no rational limit to what firearms you will find too dangerous next. Politicians have attacked firearms as too dangerous because they are too small and easy to conceal, too cheap and easy for poor people to buy, too accurate and usable and sniper weapons, too powerful and usable against vehicles. The list of “too dangerous” can easily be expanded to cover most any firearm and making every firearm “too dangerous” is exactly the real agenda.

Guns don't kill people, Gun-Free Zones kill people. This article is mis-leading when it states that  only 15% of 'mass-shootings' occur in gun-free zones. The number is actually much higher. Lots of these 'mass-shootings' are actually gang murders between rival gang members over the state sponsored drug war and shouldn't be classified as 'mass-shootings'....If you look at the REAL numbers, most of these mass shooters choose schools, malls, and movie theaters because they know people will be un-armed there....Case in point: Navy Yard Shooting....Soldiers are not allowed to be armed on the base yet we have no problem arming Al-Qaeda overseas.....Pathetic state we have come to in this country.....

“Mass shootings are a tragedy, just like earthquakes, fires, or tornadoes. Isn't it time we actually prepared for them”  That's my point, these things are happening all the time, but we're shocked every time. We should have trainings and drills and stuff by now! (The quote was from Fight, Flight, or Hide, by John Forsythe if anyone was wondering)

@GunSense Another way to ask the question is how many of the people killed in "mass shootings" were killed in gun free zones (your point, basically.) Bet the numbers change dramatically.

@GunSense Yup...they've defined "mass shootings" to manipulate the statistics, much like the "children" (gangbangers under 25, or some such) killed by guns (or more properly, each other) every day.

Well, not sure what you are saying.  When I see a 30.06 sign in Texas that is a "No Gun Zone" as a CHL holder I can not carry in that establishment so that is a gun free zone.
