Photos of the Day: First legal U.S. hemp harvest in more than fifty years

Earlier this month, Melanie Asmar reported about the first legal U.S. hemp harvest in more than fifty years getting underway in southeastern Colorado -- one that wrapped up a week or so later. Photographer Ben Droz was on hand to capture the scene, and he's kindly allowing us to share images of this historic occasion, which supporters hope will mark the birth of a new and vibrant industry based on what Asmar describes as "marijuana's sober sister."

If everyone knew more about the benefits of hemp, we wouldn't be arguing. I don't think the purpose of the photo was anything other then a brighter future. With knowledge we have power. Please don't post ignorant comments without at least researching. Here's a couple links. What really moves me is the cleansing benefits of hemp...we should all quick plant some and get on the same page. Fukushima is in the air... http://www.nemeton.com/static/nemeton/axis-mutatis/hemp.html http://www.hemphasis.net/Environment/environment.htm

Well said and intelligently put Scott. I'm from Colorado and full favor to Amendment 64. Baseless assumptions from ASSuming idiots is why this stigma is attached. It's a shame people cant get the basic concept of thinking before speaking. Probably couldn't chew gum and ride a bike either. See, assumptions are annoying aren't they? Geez, relax man. A brain. Got one? Use it.

"First" Hemp Harvest = Epic Failure

These law-breaking criminals should have been arrested.

Wow. Pretty abrasive response for someone you don't know Aaron. I find it interesting that you attempt to "correct" what you PERCEIVE as closed-mindedness with a personal attack against someone. Perhaps Scott was simply curious. I think if he had a problem with the photo he would have said so.

why is it interesting that they show a little girl touching a hemp plant? would it be weird to show a little girl touching an ear of corn? or wheat? Scott...people like you are complete douches!

Fiber Hemp! ! George Washington grew it. As a knitter I've used hemp fibers & truely believe the prices would go down if more farmers grew hemp. Canada is the only country who export hemp yarns. I'm waiting for our country to get with it. :)

Showing an innocent young girl in the field demonstrates the harmless nature of the plant and stands in contrast to the fact that it's still illegal at a federal level.

TO me it shows, a picture of a brighter, smarter, healthier future.

@McShyster   Yep, grown illegaly under state and federal laws.  From the previous westword article...

"The Colorado Department of Agriculture is currently working on rules for registering hemp farmers with the aim of having them in place by early 2014. Back in May, the department issued a statement clarifying that it's not okay to plant hemp in Colorado until that registration process in in place -- a distinction that didn't stop Loflin."

Well patrick in order to be considered a drug it needs the hullicinogen Thc....this hemp had less than .03%. Get the facts. And hemp -a cousin to marijuana has great health benefits....u couldnt get high off of hemp even if you smoked a blunt as big as a telephone Ple! Ryan would never allow or put his daughter in danger. Ur narrow mindedness is what is sad

"George Washington grew it" - FALSE!

George Washington's NEGRO SLAVES were forced to grow it for him, and it was still an unprofitable venture even with the SLAVE LABOR as he couldn't compete with the higher quality European hemp.

Wasteword and Michael Roberts don't give a fuck about accuracy or truth, their audience is a bunch of gullible ignorant stoners who also have a propensity to lie and fabricate nonsense for their own convenience.

Says the lying piece of crap who falsely claims the constitution is written on hemp, and falsely claims the first flag was hemp.

Why do stupid stoners lie so much?

stupidstuka
stupidstuka

The hemp regulations in Colorado have not been written yet and the State clearly stated it isn't legal to grow hemp until the regulations are final.

These criminals jumped the gun for their own selfish publicity.

wethepeople65

The Constitution is printed on Hemp paper, the first flag was made with Hemp fiber, paper currency has hemp fiber, ropes for ships are made from Hemp too, McShyter

Mcsyster. Im not a stoner...never have been, I support the cultivation of hemp because it is an amazing plant with hundreds of uses. Ryan never hid anything he did....it was totally public. Noone stopped it and noone was arrested.

kc728

Mcshyster. U r uneducated. I was there and the hemp was tested. To be considered good marijuana tthe THC level needs to be 5% or higher. This hemp that was grown has less than .03% Which couldnt get u high of u wanted it to. This plant could help amarica in many ways, but u r probably a suit and tie with no idea the importace of growing any crop in america.

stupidstuka
stupidstuka

Stupid stoner lies!

The Constitution is written on PARCHMENT, not hemp you lying piece of shit.

The first flag was made of WOOL, you lying piece of shit.
