On Monday, Alex Brown posted about a "Drugs in the Americas: Legalization of Marijuana," a panel discussion during which the Drug Policy Alliance's Evan Nadelmann argued for broader drug legalization.

His position was echoed by a number of readers, including this one.

Scott Ingalsbe writes:

The biggest killers are already legal booze, prescriptions and tobacco. So what harm can meth, heroin and cocaine really do if legal?

Well that is a double edged sword, prescription pain killers are lab grade heroin so yes! On the other hand cigarettes not so much.

Meth and Heroin are used in prescription drugs.

Actually prescription drugs kill more people per year than all illegal drugs put together. Tobacco kills the most of all. Its amazing how a country is so bought out by tobacco and pharm companies, and still tries to blame everything on the drugs.

I would like to believe that legalizing those things would help us economically enough to offset the damage it would do to our country. On the flip side it would certainly weed out the idiots and god knows we need that more than anything else.
