Reader: Prairie dogs have got to go, because we're human and they're not

prairiedog2.205x205.jpg
Alan Prendergast recently posted about the eradication of a prairie dog colony on the site of a proposed "nature" school. The item prompted plenty of our readers to decry the plan and defend the prairie dogs.

But not everyone was in the animals' corner, as illustrated by this post.

Craig_Houston writes:

Ironic, yes, but prairie dogs are awful. They spawn like crazy, carry diseases and ruin whatever landscape they take over. If they're not near extinction I see no problems with this. Last I checked, we're humans and they're not. Being at the top of the food chain has its benefits.

Hola.

Me sorprende que puedan escribirse imbecilidades tan grandes como ésta: "Last I checked, we're humans and they're not. Being at the top of the food chain has its benefits."; personas con tan bajo coeficiente intelectual deberían quedarse en su casa, son un peligro público.

Thanks, but I will pass on molding your fecal matter into the shape of a delicious furry creature. They may not be meaty but they sure are tender.

I just took a huge dump. You could mold it into the shape of a prairie dog and eat it. And it would probably be better for you.

Hell no! Prairie dogs are an indigenous species to the Great Western Plains. Prairie dogs are also FOOD for birds of prey, foxes, coyotes, etc so if u want to keep your lil dogs in ur backyard, better have some food for the predators... Or should we just annihilate them too?

You want animals to be treated equally? Okay, then how about this-- land is valuable and these little bastards are refusing to pay rent. It's time we evict their furry asses! How's that for equal??

And then we wonder what is wrong with the world and the people that live in it.

We should domesticate Prairie Dogs, so that we can make them a part of the food supply.

I think that they should stay! I recently moved here from FL and thoroughly enjoy seeing them along my daily run to work! If anything we should go because they were here first. Why arent more people appreciative of living in a state abundant with wildlife?

They may seem useless... but they are an important part of the food chain and our ecosystem.

They haven't found plague in prairie dogs in over 30 years. That's just rancher propaganda.

We can easily replace "prarie dogs" with "humans" in the reader's comment. We have ruined landscapes. We have spread disease. We spawn like crazy and take over everything. We as a species need to start recognizing our interconnectedness with the universe- including prairie dogs. Our ego driven desire to eradicate based on the notion of cleanliness is ridiculous. I'm tired of animals getting the brunt of our fear mongering.

All of you live where a Prairie Dog colony once existed and now you have this holy-er than thou attitude. Your home next to Washington Park displaced a Prairie Dog 100 years ago. But since you are so full of your own bullshit, you feel empowered to label new housing projects as "Sprawl". When you get done smelling your own farts and continue spewing "Smug" all over, please realize you are an idiot.

all life should be treated equally. A prarie dogs life is no greater or less than mine or your life. They deserve the right to live here jus like we are. Without them-our soil wouldnt be habitable to grow anything-food,grass, trees, etc. They're tunnels airate the earth. They may carry plauge that mite kill u-only if they bite u-and u didnt have a hospital-and if that happened while they were running away from u-and if u were an idiot. But humans carry things that kill other animals too. The difference? We want to kill them-merely cause they make holes? Or cause minor problems to property? The same thing that i stated before does tons more for the good of this planet than bad..as for humans-we're going down with this bitch. Earth would trade every human for one prarie dog anyday.

Humans carry far more diseases than prairie dogs.

At what point do we realize that prairie dogs, and other wildlife in Colorado, was here long before we were and show them some respect. We tend to use up all the resources, push animals toward extinction, then wonder why our planet is in such bad shape. Leave them be.

They are cannibals and will eat their own dead......One money shot with a 30.6 and you can hit ten. On the other hand there appears to be a colony right by my townnhome complex, kinda weird Arapahoe county shit though....

I'm all for the prairie dogs. I say we domesticate them and teach them how to use mobile devices and play apps.

Are Prairie Dogs not a part of Nature? Good Grief! As the city continues to sprawl into their natural habitat...they should be exterminated?!
