As we noted in a June post, the 16th Street Mall is the Mile High City's number one tourist attraction according to Visit Denver. As such, keeping it safe and inviting for folks from across the country and the globe is one of the city's top goals.

But these efforts didn't prevent a stabbing last night in front of a McDonald's restaurant that's among the busiest along this iconic stretch of Denver.

Details and more below.

According to Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson, the incident took place at approximately 8:25 p.m. yesterday in front of the McDonald's nearest 16th and Broadway. Here's a look at the restaurant in question:

Officers rushed to the scene, Jackson says, "and they found a black male party suffering from a stab wound to the neck area."

Fortunately, the injury wasn't life-threatening. "He was alert and talking" prior to being taken to a nearby hospital, Jackson notes.

The suspect in the crime is described as a white male around 45 years of age, with red hair, a short red beard and dark clothing. The cops set up a canvas in the immediate area, but the man was able to evade capture. At this writing, he remains at large.

As for what set off the altercation, Jackson says, "It appears the two people possibly knew each other and there was a verbal confrontation between them" -- one that quickly became very pointed.

I love police jargon.  How big is a "black male party", anyway, and can a white male be invited?  Are there girls there, too?

Yes, there are some colorful people on the 16th St Mall. This was between 2 people the knew each other. This wasn't some random stabbing. It is not like a tourist was attacked.

Overall the Mall is safe and fun to be on,especially if you like people watching. Day or night, I always enjoy myself downtown.

Not surprised at all. 16th has turned in to a haven for nut jobs.

Was he stabbed with THAT knife?!? I'll admit I do fancy the Westword's dramatic flair they put on news.

We have a drug war fueled gang and addiction problem in our city....Crackheads and gang members stab each other...If you want to get rid of the violence...Ask your leaders to end the drug war....Your city will be much safer....

Um...this is a little vague and probably not good for tourism. Rephrase the article's title. Thx

Last night? And with that giant knife right out of Hitchcock's Psycho? Wait - it was "only" a Domestic: "It appears the two people possibly knew each other and there was a verbal confrontation between them." As you were.

This is a really insensitive photo to accompany this story.

Oh great. Right next to the office building where my company is moving next weekend. It's bad enough to have that crappy McDs there, but the mall is no longer safe. For anybody.

The Google maps image at the bottom of the article looks like a screen shot from GTA V.

Everybody knows the mall is for tourists and homeless people. I pretty much never have a reason to hit up 16th street at all.

The mall sucks. There are maybe two worthwhile blocks. The rest of it is a mess. Is there any talk of getting rid of the homeless mall as other cities have done?
