Five counties vote for 51st state question: Top twenty secession memes

colorado.flag.noco.205x205.jpg
Big memes below.
Yesterday, voters in five of eleven counties considering the question of whether they should secede from Colorado to create a 51st state answered "yes." The odds of this actually happening are microscopic, since Colorado's legislature or voters and the U.S. Congress would have to sign off. But the spirit of protest the vote represents put us in mind of the campaign by twenty or so states to secede from the U.S. after Barack Obama's reelection. Look below to see our twenty favorite secession memes -- and see which ones apply to the wished-for state of Northern Colorado.

I'd say let the kooks secede except that the vote barely passed and the ones with a brain who don't want to secede would be stuck with the kooks.

I think our elected leaders should be ashamed of themselves for allowing these people to feel they have no choice.

You're absolutely right Gloria. A true Coloradan would never diss another by --hmm.. let me see--I dunno--how about maybe--THREATENING TO LEAVE THE STATE IF THEY DONT GET THEIR WAY! SMH...

The people who created many of those meme's must not actually understand the 51st state initiative.

Sure, but only if they join KS right there, but not make a new state, 51 states is dumb, they would have to change the American flag!

Bob Knudsen

Self determination, yo. Let em go if they want to

Did I miss something? Are they getting to decide for the whole state? Besides, maybe we don't want them anyway.

That's just sales tax. Add up all the other taxes (income, property, etc...) and see what you come up with.

Let them go! I could not care less if they want to secede. It will only save the rest of us money!!!

According to my calculations, the 5 counties that actually voted to pursue this measure have 0.5633% of Colorado's population according to the July 2012 Census Bureau estimate. But in July 2012, they brought in only 0.3555% of Colorado's net state sales tax. I'm guessing these "taxes and other assets" are not very important to the rest of the state. http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1251833869591&ssbinary=true

Ugh, if only there were a dislike button... Besides the fact that they are completely idiotic and uninteresting, none of these "memes" are even applicable to this situation. The potential Northern Colorado isn't trying to secede from the UNION, they're trying to secede from Colorado. KIND of a big difference.

A Wikipedia search shows you are right. I thought I heard this in college.

I was exaggerating quite a bit, but the broad point I was making was sure...secede, but get none of the benefits of being in the state. Zero state funds. I didn't mean it quite so literal, but I guess I should have explained that.

That doesn't even make sense, what airport do you think people from Cheyenne and Western Kansas use? People from out of state use Colorado highways, too...

Toby Hartman

Yes they should. The people in those counties voted for it. And they wouldn't need taxes from Denver. They would be their own state with their own state funding. The rest of Colorado would lose out on the taxes that those counties currently provide to Colorado, not to mention other assets.

let 'em go!! Good riddance!!!!!!!!! (agree with Bryon--none of our revenue will go with them)

Get rid of them-- they should fund themselves.

Absolutely. What's so interesting is that they're the same ones hit by the floods. So. Give back EVERY PENNY the state of Colorado invested in you, you bloody damn ingrates. Then get the hell out. I'll hold the door.

Let em Go!! Oh and don't use Colorado in your "new name!"

Bryon A. Henderson

Yes. As long as they don't get a single penny of revenue or any kind of support from the state of Colorado. I'm tired of all these whiny-assed cry-babies threatening to secede from the state or the country because the majority doesn't agree with or support their particular beliefs. Let them be the test case so that everyone can see it fail and then maybe we can stop hearing about it already.

Scott McMahon

Sure just don't drive on the highways or go to DIA or get anything from the state whatsoever. Peace...see you later

Of course their 2 senators would have the same influence, with a fraction of the population. Also, the constitution says no state may be split into more states.

If you don't want legal marijuana that's fine. Don't sell it then. But don't try to secede when youll be hopeless and worthless without us. That tiny part of Colorado cant survive without the taxes and things from Denver. It's already been pretty rough economically up there, I can't see why theyre gonna make it worse

Lynn Voss

Yes let them go. Colorado will be better off. A few less red counties with their hands out.

I'm embarrassed to be a Coloradoan. I thought the South had the biggest idiots, not anymore. It's a shame.
