Reader: Aurora is notorious and dangerous, just like Compton and Chicago

1400.lima.homicide.205x205.jpg
Our post earlier this week about the gunfire in an Aurora neighborhood that killed one man and critically injured another, One man dead, another critical in 1400 North Lima triple shooting, elicited a number of comments about the city and its reputation.

One commenter, Tim Sparhawk, who lives near the area where the shooting took place had this to say:

Aurora is notoriously in the news for one thing or another, and very rarely for good reason. Ppl talk the same way about Compton Cal. or Chicago... Dangerous places, doesn't mean violence and crime don't happen in Lincoln Nebraska, it's just that they aren't making the news every week. It's just that Aurora walks like a duck and talks like a duck. I have no ill will with Aurora but it's just always that one city that's always making trouble.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

Oh yeah, I'll trade you a New Haven for an Aurora any day.

All high crime areas have much in common with each other..and it isn't just a liquor store and church on almost every street corner.

I'm just putting that out there, what YOU guess at is YOUR thought process not mine.

I moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Aurora and by comparison it;s like a vacation resort. The reader should spend a week in Detroit, D.C. Memphis or Jackson, MI to feel the real effects of a crime ridden area.

just colfax is ugly looking they need to use some of that tax money and clean it up. when things look nice the monkey's look for new trees to swing inthat reminds them of the old trees they came from.

I live in Aurora. And there is nothing even close to scary about this place. Except maybe the cops... Ridiculous how many I see every time I leave my house. After living in a few big cities, I don't see how anyone can even dare to compare to Chicago or Compton... Really?? Besides, with all the cops here, how could it be crime ridden...?????

I grew up in Gary, Indiana just outside Chicago which makes Aurora look like heaven the only problem in Colorado is that there are WAAAAYYYY too many cops they need to just assign everyone an officer, or send half of them to Chicago where they can try to violate everyones rights there and see what happens. Aurora is soft, there's just too many frat kids and suburban moms in this state that watch foxnews too much.

I grew up and now live in Aurora. I chose to raise my kids because of the diversity of people. I wanted them to know that there are good people, bad people, blacks, asians, gay, straight. Every place has its issues. And, Colfax is a big part of Aurora's issues.

You've got to be kidding me. I love Aurora. The people are real there. The crime is nowhere like old school Compton or Chicago. Live anywhere with a high crime rate, Baltimore, DC, Compton, or Chicago, then come back. It's not the same at all. Don't be scared and ignorant.

I've lived and taught school in the Aurora community and I hear it all the time as people react to it. Some of the city is a working-class that needs investment in schools and neighborhoods, and is majority minority. There are social problems with poverty, but  I have never felt unsafe in Aurora.

I agree with many commentors, that original post is a result of  local culture and beliefs and fears of non-white dominated areas, with tinges of long-held racial  fears and prejudices that many deny and fail to recognize.

What we're really  discussing with posts like this about Aurora (and Compton and Chicago) is the results of our history and centuries of racial unease. Many should take a step back and think about what you're saying. Do you really think you would be in any danger in parts of Aurora, or do non-white neigborhoods make you nervous?

I don't think anyplace deserves that rep but they sure seem to have more than their share of trouble.

Puhleez! I moved here from Detroit a few years ago and people from Denver have no idea what a dangerous neighborhood looks like. There is nothing in this entire state that even comes close to Chicago, Compton, or any major city known for crime. This is written by paranoid white people who spent their whole life here and lock their car doors if someone browner than them comes near.

Um..... Compton is a stretch for sure but Aurora is definitely the worst Colorado has to offer. I'm native and it's always been the cesspool of Denver. Even when they were shooting people in five points.... When they were done with the drive by they went home to aurora.

Memphis is the only town I have lived in even close to Compton! To compare Aurora means you have never been to Compton!

I am a Colorado native and I cringe if I have to go anywhere near Aurora.

Makes me curious if the person that said that has ever actually BEEN to Chicago or Compton. #ProbablyNot. Aurora is not so bad.

Kinda laughable if you've ever been to Chiraq or even Jersey City. Dear Reader: travel to more "scary" [i think he means not all caucasian] areas to gain some perspective. SMH

Actually, thinking about it. I'd call it a tie between Aurora/Colorado Springs, out of the whole state, for worst places.

The first thing I tell anyone who comes to Denver.....Stay the f**k away from aurora, it's a degenerate cesspool. (I'd give someone directions to five-points before I'd tell them where aurora is.)

Marcus Tompkins

It's not shit compared to other states, but it is the worst part of our state. Colorado's "compton/chiraq/trashcanistan/whatever you wanna call it" And lets not try to turn it into a "which place is harder than here crap" people die everyday. everywhere. But Aurora still sucks.

Silly, not even a slice of Aurora is comparable to Compton. And to compare it to Chicago as a whole is also silly. Chicago is a huge city, with many neighborhood divisions.

I would say areas or neighborhoods are very bad, but Aurora also has very, very nice upscale areas as well!

A-town isn't *that* bad. I've only had my vehicle broken into twice here.

Aurora has always had a rough reputation during the 30+ years I've lived in CO. Not to say there aren't some good folks there, but I stay away.

Aurora has always had a negative reputation, this is nothing new.

Everyone knows Aurora is the Compton of Denver. Duh. The cops were all hired by that meth addict who the prison was named after, and then unnamed when they realized their former boss was a freak meth'd out weirdo gay predator. But let's get real, the part of Aurora that is real bad is along Colfax. And I think all the cities who share Colfax have problems along that strip at night. But really, you have to put the rent by the hours hotels somewhere.

Ted Peterson

We should be talking about neighborhoods and not cities. Most of "Aurora" is richy-rich. Where you've got poverty you get people just trying to make ends meet. Just keep you're head down, don't owe people anything, and don't talk shit - you'll be fine. Oh, and don't sleep with pookie's sister... that never helps.

I imagine If you've never actually been to Compton, then it's comparable.

I'm from a small town in Colorado. Grew up there. Lived in Denver for 3 years of my adult life. My whole family is from Arvada. People just want to make a news story. It's not that bad at all.

Dangerous like Chicago or Compton? Ridiculous hyperbole. A suburban shithole? More accurate.
