Auraria campus is cracking down on the homeless -- in the bathrooms, anyway

AurariaBath.jpg
Auraria has long been known as a sort of safe haven for the homeless in Denver.

It's a great place to get out of the wind, grab a half-smoked cigarette or two and maybe, just maybe, snag a chance to use a bathroom and get a break from your harsh reality.

But not anymore; Auraria is getting serious about restricting homeless access, at least in the bathrooms of the South classroom.

In a recent and most likely unnoticed change, new signs were installed on the bathroom doors declaring that they are only for use by "current students, staff, faculty and authorized visitors." It then kindly goes on to ask that people not in those categories not trespass before mentioning that anyone who does will be arrested.

Yes, arrested. And while jail is at least a warm place to sleep for the night, winding up there isn't pleasant.

The bathrooms on the south campus are clearly at the forefront of the bum battle. None of the other buildings have been adorned with the lovely placards as of yet -- but maybe it's just a matter of time.

Either way, it looks like the underlying "Meh, whatever" attitude that's graced Auraria for years is on its way out -- and that's a shame.

I'm an Auraria student, and I can honestly say that the homeless don't seem to cause much harm at all. They don't bug for change, barely ask for cigarettes and hardly ever go into the buildings, let alone the bathrooms. So why the attack?

Who knows? And who will contact the proper authorities after seeing the signs? Hall monitors?

Hey Legan..... See what happens to so called "peaceful" liberals? They preach peace and to tolerate everyone.....oh wait.... That's only if you think like them. Then they get all grrrr and mean and do things like post your job info in order to try to ruin you or make you look like a bad person. Gosh that's real peaceful like huh? They also taunt and curse and mock.... Kinda like what a bully would do..... Bullying is a terrible thing unless you are a liberal. Then it's ok!! They rarely have anything constructive to say either. As long as they can shift the conversation to being hateful towards you then they don't have to try and cover up the sheer Hypocrisy of their thinking and acting. Remember that peace and toleration are the only way to live..... Unless you have another opinion. Then you are a hateful, terrible person and you should be punished for thinking.

It's been a long time coming. As a professor, I get the crime notes. There are far too many incidents of violent crime on campus where the perpetrator had no reason to be here to begin with. We are losing students who otherwise would take night school classes here to other institutions that can keep their campus safe. Our primary responsibility should be to our students.

Denver's road home did not start the little red homeless meters. man. They have been in Denver for over a decade. Incorporation of those meters was a part of Hickenloopers Mayoral plan called Denver's Road Home. Learn about your city before you spout about nonsense.

I taught and was a student on the Auraria campus for 10 years and never had a problem with homeless people. I did have problems with the administration and some of their heavy-handed rules, even for faculty. For those commenting that the homeless can go elsewhere, where have you been? Not downtown in quite awhile, that's for sure. Bathrooms are under lock and key and you have to buy something to use the facilities. I never had a homeless person make a lewd remark to me, ask for change, ask for food, and I don't remember seeing any of them enter the restrooms. Go to the administration of CCD if you want to know what's going on. And yes, they are in a new building south of the South Building. If you think the homeless are icky, should be run over, annihilated, I don't want YOU using the restrooms at Auraria.

FUCK OFF ELLE. I volunteer at the Rescue Mission, and see the same people coming thru and hear the same fucking excuses always. And they arent doing anything to improve their situation. And Also i have a Family Member close to me who is on the damn streets and is content being on the streets season after season. And so are his little circle of friends. So before you attempt to be a BIG GIRL and come at me Incorrect. Learn all the Facts and shut the fuck up. You stupid Hoe.

I'd like to first address the fact that Jones Hassell does in fact have sketchy customer service as a waitress at Leela's as she treated me like a homeless person for being in Leela's for approx 20 mins without purchasing anything with the threat of throwing me out like I didn't drop $20 in there the day before, so I can see how the homeless would threaten her on GP. Secondly, the homeless on Auraria is a bittersweet thing. Nate must live in LaLa land as there are regular occurrences of student/faculty vs homeless persons that I've been witnessing for over a year now. For the most part, the homeless are taking advantage of being able to use ANY building's facilities, they beg for change in the library or ask you for food when you sit down to eat on the cafe side, or last week in West Classroom when the facilities people were drawing straws to see who was gonna clean up a pile of poo in the Men's bathroom for the 3rd time that week or the ones that disrespect you out right like a man did to me a couple of months back by rudely commenting on my hind parts and I admittedly shoved him off his bike for talking to me that way and I haven't seen him since. Lastly, I speak for the amount of students that are in fact homeless or a cardboard box away in the means of pursuing a higher education; the campus turns many a blind eye and treats this category of students like shit. College is a business and when alumni dollars/image are at stake, no fucks are given to per case basis incidents because it's about money/image, not improving the livelihood of the students who go there; follow the dollars as I've always been told. MSU has a loooong way to go in regards to addressing how students and staff can get along with the homeless population without incident or ego-involvements.

Oh, my heart goes out to all those poor traumatized students who have to witness the suffering of homeless people. That must be really tough for you. Good thing students are sheltered from that sort of real-life stuff in the classrooms!

Kinda messed up, but definitely the right call... the students pay for the privilege of using any and all o the campus facilities, why should anyone be entitled to use them for free? That's what convenience store n fast food joints are for, I hate being asked for change and harassed every day when I don't have any...

Thank god. When I went to Metropolitan State University of Denver we would find homeless people masturbating in the bathrooms in the library. Drugs, drunks and stench while paying tuition to watch the unchecked vagrancy. I was ok with a few of them but it's a massive problem there.

It seems no coincidence that at a time when the economy is still reeling from recession and capital is being invested in for-profit prisons, Denver is using city ordinances like the so called "urban camping ban" to further remove homeless people from public space without providing needed services (addiction treatment, mental health, housing, etc.). I have been on the Auraria campus for 14 years, as a student and as a teacher. Homeless people are not a problem on our campus. They are certainly not infiltrating the place the way that some people on this thread would seem to believe. If homelessness scares you, maybe you should take the time to reflect on the systematic failures that contribute to the growing problem of homelessness: lack of employment options, lack of affordable housing, and virtually no access to health care. So, you can go pretending that the world was created for the privileged and the employed, like yourselves, but when you understand the sheer size and scope of homelessness it's hard to blame it all on personal choices or "lazy" people. The Auraria Campus has long been a welcoming place to Denver's homeless, among which we are seeing a growing number of students, and we should fight to keep it that way. It sickens me to see that, along with the Downtown Denver Business Partnership, my own institution is also participating in a politics of class warfare.

As students on the Auraria campus, we are already subjected to drug trafficking, people with guns in classrooms, and gang members. Enough is enough.

Nathan- it's says students. If you are homeless and a student you are still a student. It's talking about the population of homeless people who are NOT students.

Jones Hassell

That's the right decision. I work at a 24 hour cafe and have to deal with homeless people using drugs in my restrooms, sleeping in stalls, asking people for money, and 9 times out of 10 even when I am polite and ask them to vacate they make death threats, cause a scene, and are overall completely unpleasant and rude.

It's a bathroom for the students, not a shooting den for the homeless junkies.

The students spend much of their day on campus, so that it's a home away from home. They deserve safe and clean bathrooms.

All the folks on here criticizing the school, please let us know how many homeless people you allow in your home to shoot smack in your bathroom?

Nathan Bennett

What about the homeless students that go to CCD? The homeless rate within the student body is higher than you would think.

When I was there, I stepped into a bathroom in the North Classroom and saw two guys, who were obviously not students, shooting up heroin. From a safety standpoint, the campus has to do what its gotta do.

Lisa Wiles

I went there for 4 years, and it never bothered me when homeless people were in the bathrooms or around campus. They keep to themselves for the most part...I was never once asked for change. I kind of took comfort in knowing that they at least had somewhere to go. The businesses around there don't let them use their restrooms, so their options in that area are limited.

Lisa Wiles

Legen...first of all, you're fucking stupid for using a How I Met Your Mother reference as your name. I mean, really? And second of all, I hope that one day you lose your job at that really awesome parking lot and end up screwed and on the streets. People like you are the ones who deserve to freeze in the winter and starve every day. How dare you make such a claim and speak to people the way you are. Who the fuck do you think you are?
