Reader: Having a Colorado license plate doesn't make you a native

snow.crash.205x205.jpg
Since we first posted about the ten driving tips non-Colorado natives forget before their second winter here, we've collected comments left by hundreds of folks, including many from other states who feel they're at least as good behind the wheel as people from these parts, if not better. But some readers aren't buying it, including this one.

eat_more_smunkies writes:

Thank you all for proving our point. Most of you on here are NOT native. Most people living here are not native. How can you say "Colorado drivers" when almost half of you are from someplace else? Just because you have Colorado license plates does not make you native. And all you out of towners who are posting butt hurt comments about natives are just angry we are calling you out. Also NATIVE means you were born here. Heck, we'll even take the people who have lived here since they were at least 6. I was born here.

Everybody in Denver thinks that everyone else is a bad driver. Wait... doesn't that make me a bad driver? No, never, I'm the best driver ever...

Who really gives a flying fuck anyway? This stupid bitch makes it sound like just because she was born here she's better than others. *yawn* dumb slut

You can be a "Colorado driver" without being a Native! I'm recently from Florida, and the drivers in the Denver Metro area are much better drivers than in Florida, that's for sure! And I do find a lot more Native born Coloradans in Colorado, then I found Native Floridians in Florida!

Most native-born Americans are essentially clueless about the world beyond their borders and even the very workings of government at all levels. Indeed, the "native pride" schtick doesn't get you much other than brownie points from other, equally clueless, natives.

Not a native. Been here since 92. 1st half commuting daily to Downtown Denver from Monument. 2nd half commuting daily to DTC. Driving for 36 years from L.A. to Boston and all over the U.S. to Mexico City to the Front Range. My son IS a native. He got his permit a month ago. So who would you pick to drive you from Colorado Springs to DIA in a blizzard?

Being born in CO doesn't make you native either. Diversity is what makes this a great place.

I mean really dude you've been posting the same shit over and over. I get it and I myself fuck with non-native all the time, but you're boring the shit out of me with this " you"re not a Native " shit. WEAK!

I think this refers to those fair weather transplants, NOT the Mid-Westerners who do have horrible winters...we KNOW you know how to drive in bad weather. That said, I remember back when the commutes were so much easier before everybody decided to move to our beautiful state from ALL over! Don't you miss home? Don't you want to return? Let us NATIVES know how we can help?

Its funny cause a lot of these comments are from more people who are butt-hurt because they wish they were true natives.  And i would like to rant about the pioneer plates that people have.  When those first came out, i got one but had to prove, with documentation, that my family has lived in Colorado for more than 100 years.  This was in 2003 because my great grandparents moved to Colorado in 1903.  Now, you can live here for a year and get a pioneer plate and feel cool because you are a fake native.  I remember before all the stupid Texans, Californians, and New Englanders came and ruined our state by over populating it and polluting it.

Also think it's laughable that half or more of these true natives reside in the dirty d come on people do you even know what the mtns look like I guess on a clear day maybe true Coloradans live in the mtns city slickers live in denver

I grow up I'm nh came to co when I was 18 the roads get way worse in nh so if you were born here and thinking you are superior driver go test your skills in the northeast then run mouth also I have lived in summit county for 16 years so tell me that driveing around denver with your native bumper sticker makes you any better on the roads I think not

Native/Non-native makes no difference. Saying you can drive better because you were born here is like saying you can go as fast as you want in the snow because you are in a 4-wheel drive pick-up truck. Been driving for 40 years (28 years in Colorado) and I am from the south and had never driven in snow until I moved here. Hard to believe how many times I have been stuck or in an accident since I moved here. Oh wait. I have never been stuck or in an accident since I moved here. :/

Being a native means you think the Blue Bonnet is fine dining, you possibly cut my grass or service my hot water heater and you can no longer afford to live here.

BTW, I get nervous when I-70 closes and 285 gets busy with "Denver drivers."

None taken, as a Floridian who learned to drive on ice in NE Connecticut in a Ford Pinto with recaps. I'm grateful for the skills and my Subaru with excellent snow tires as I commute on 285 in Park and Summit County.

But they are expensive, those plates! I paid to be native.

So, riddle me this transplants... HOW do you know the bad drivers are "from" here? I grew up here and it's MUCH worse since the alien invasion of NON-natives! As for more accidents here than LA.. really? Cuz traffic sucks and you can't drive more than 10mph during rush hour... IF that... My brother lives 20 miles from his job , normally 30 mins...EXCEPT the 2 hours+ if he drives during peak hours... Really people, there's an argument for ALL drivers... next time you see a bad driver, how about stopping to ask where they're from rather than assuming a CO plate=CO native... simply means RESIDENT!

Latifah Abdul'laah
Latifah Abdul'laah

How laughable all these comments are. If you're a transplant and think you know everything because you've lived other places, get over yourself. If you're a native that thinks you know everything about driving in the Winter, get over yourself. If you're driving an SUV, talking on the phone, and driving too fast in icy conditions, please kill yourself. I don't care where your from.

Stan Salazar
Stan Salazar

PS glad all us non native Coloradans that pay the natives taxes all agree that no matter where we came from, we are now where the worst drivers are. My gf says every year that as winter progresses traffic moves faster because you natives get accustomed to driving in the snow again. I call bullshit since it was just 7 months ago that y'all were doing it last. Are people here that short minded?

Stan Salazar
Stan Salazar

Native or not, you locals suck at driving especially on C470 Westbound where there is a fast/passing lane and a slow lane also used to merge on and off. Then there's this whole situation about fear of wearing out your turn signal by using it. I'm a Texas Native since by your accounts I'm not a native of Colorado & have oh driven in snow once prior to 2 weeks ago and that was coming in from grand junction and I can still run hot laps around you "natives." It isn't cockiness that allows me to do this, it's the ability to be familiar enough with my vehicle to know what it can and can't do. If you aren't confident in your abilities as a driver or if you're questionable about how far you can push your car, stay in the slow lane or on the side streets so that those of us who can drive in rain, sleet, snow & bright sunny days can get from A to B in one piece and in a timely fashion. Thank you Ex Texas Native that could give a rats ass if I'm accepted as a Colorado Native.

Neither does owning a Subaru. Does Colorado own stock in that company?

@Brook Davis the definition of being native to a place is that you were born there.  Being born in Colorado makes you a native of the state, as opposed to a transplant.

You sound and seem very bumptious, snooty, egotistical, and....oh your from New York.  Explains why you are such an asshole.  Thank you for admitting Colorado is much better than anywhere else because you chose to live here.  Now you should chose to leave.

Thank you.  And, its already set in stone that a Colorado Native is someone who is born in Colorado, no ifs, ands, or buts.

You brought up a good point. Thank you for paying your road taxes by getting plated. If that is indeed what you mean by paying taxes. Because if you are here and do not have Colorado plates it means you really do not have A right to even be on the roads let alone bitch about Colorado drivers. And no as a native I call bs on Your theory of forgetting.

sean456

Because you are not. And at least Texans are trainable to drive in adverse weather. Californians are not.
