Reader: Overreacting to an innocent kiss can turn kids into sex offenders

jade.masters.ownbey.205x205.jpg
Jade Owney.
Our followup post about Hunter Yelton, a six-year-old suspended for kissing a classmate, focused on the girl's mom, Jade Masters-Owney, a teacher who felt the boy's actions fit the definition of sexual harassment. (The school has now dropped that label.) This contention fired up plenty of readers, including this one, who strongly disagrees.

Ana Micaela Garcia writes:

no...just no...this is y kids grow up to be sexual offenders...people overreacting for things like this. making them feel like they are sick-os at age 6. i understand punishment but the label sexual harassment is taking it too far. wtf?

This was once seen as well mannered, like a hand shake. It's not like he kissed her on the lips. Makes you wonder what else this mom likes to make a big deal about. She must really enjoy finding things to complain about. This is something that even if it did upset her, she could have met with the boys parents and told him the next time you want to be polite, don't. It is just another example of how our sensitivity is wildly out of control. Seriously over this topic. Maybe she should consider home schooling. Easy solution.

I'm just suuuure your spawn will turn out to be such fine, outstanding citizens after having been raised by a clearly deranged social media DWEEB of a parent like you. Derp.

WW is hardly alone. Just take a quick glance at the DP comment's section and its own Lamebook feed. It makes the butthurt dwellers here tame by comparison.

I blame the school for this... I realize that parents still have an active role in the children's lives, but the parents have the kids in school for a reason. The kids spend the majority of their lives in school interacting with other kids in various way. The school messed up in the first place by allowing this to get to the level of attention it did. If the kid is doing something wrong, set his rear end in timeout, and separate him from the rest of the children until he learns his lesson. It shows how passively aggressive we have become as a society. Even when I was in school (which was not that long ago), teachers had creative ways of dealing with poor behavior. If the school had this much of a problem with it, isn't the responsibility to the administration to correct bad behavior, especially if the child is going to be in school every day for more than 8 hours a day. The administration at the school, and possibly the district level deserve a complete overhaul. If the will of a 6 year old is strong enough to show that rather than punish a child for wrong doing, they would label as a sex offender and attempt to publicly chastise both of these families, we need a total overhaul of the entire school. That means principal, assistant, teacher, etc. Because in talking right now, if a school has this much of a lack of control over the children they have in their care, the safety of these children has already been compromised. An easy alternative to this would be if the child were home schooled, however, as one can tell, the mother of the boy is probably a working class citizen, who can not simply afford to quit her job and to start a home schooling program. So, in turn she effectively trusts the school to do the right thing by her son, and help to raise and educate the child in here absence.. Total let down when it comes to this school, and again, the entire administration who had involvement in this situation needs to be let go and relieved of their positions

Next up: A newborn baby touched another newborn baby's nipple. The parents of the first newborn will now have to register it as a sex offender.

We need to get a rid of the majority of the Westword's threads...

can we say goodbye to this thread? to change the song's words a bit, "he kissed a girl and he liked it...."

Erica, calling straight people 'breeders' makes you look like an ass. It's really not any more acceptable than some one calling you a bull dike. It's NOT okay on any level. And let me make it clear my best friend is gay. Second, the little boy may need disciplined on his boundaries, but yes the girls mother wanting him called a sex offender is wrong. She can come live in my home for a week (we live across the street from a child rapist) and she can see the reality of that label and it's repercussions. Be nice to each other! Haven't we had a shitty enough week here Colorado?

I blame the media for this one! Not the parents. They could have worked this out alone in private. Let it go already Westward. You're starting to become desperate by dragging this out. Your readers are saying vicious things about the girls family & it's disgusting. And you are fueling the mob. lowering yourself to the likes of TMZ. Shame.

People are over reacting to this situation. That includes all of you that are throwing names and bad mo jo. If you have something to say, be eloquent. Use grown up words. You arent helping if you are breeding hate and anger. I think the school and the little girls parents have put this over the top. I contacted the school directly and told them so. (in a polite way).

I love how breeders have kids just to inflict the same amount of ignorance and stupidity into the childs lives so the breeders feel normal. Awesome. Keep breeding you fuckers and welcome to the idiocracy youve all helped to create. I want to steralize 80% of the population

What becomes of all the little girls I see trying to kiss little boys on the playground? Should we label them sexual harassers too? Suspend them from pre-k?

Jen Stretch

Ummm isn't that what a majority of readers have said already? I don't recall one post that agrees with this dumb bitch. Then again I haven't read them all. The school should stand their ground and not let this ignorant woman influence their punishment. And I feel sorry for her daughter's future endeavors with boys (if she gets any with this idiot raising her)

Politically Correctness Strikes Again... America you need to wake up and quite these people and get rid of them, especially the ones that you have voted into office and work in our government.

I think it's possible. Now this kids going to think he's going to have to sneak it and that it's bad to do. So next time he might try to forcefully get a kiss.

I was thinking this yesterday. Taking something so innocent and making it into something so monstrous will damage that little boy.

Deejay Gyro

That sounds like an overreaction to a overreaction if you ask me. 20 years ago we wouldnt even be having this conversation because we wouldve known it was an innocent gesture by the kids and not the actions of a future perv....

Hunter's parents should counter sue this chick for defamation of character.

When neurotic hysterical adults torture and abuse children with such parochial psychoses -- those children become emotionally damaged and often grow up to become school shooters, mass murderers, Army infantry or Republican Presidents.
