Undocumented mom Imelda Valenzuela Gonzalez's court hearing delayed again

imelda.and.tania.205x205.jpg
Imelda and daughter Tania.
Earlier this year, we told the story of Imelda Valenzuela Gonzalez, a mother of three who owns a hair salon and is one of a growing number of undocumented immigrants speaking out about their cases in the hopes of stopping their deportations.

At a court hearing in April, Valenzuela Gonzalez's case was postponed until December 4, pending the outcome of a similar case before the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. The appeals case has since been decided, but Valenzuela Gonzalez's case has been postponed again.

The reason for the most recent delay has nothing to do with the specifics of her case. Instead, it was caused by the retirement of the immigration judge who was handling it. In court yesterday, Valenzuela Gonzalez's case was assigned to a new judge, Eileen Trujillo. Valenzuela Gonzalez has been ordered to appear before Trujillo on June 18, at which time the judge will set a final date for an individual hearing.

In short, the outcome of yesterday's court date means that Valenzuela Gonzalez and her children will have to wait several more months before they know if she'll be sent back to her native Mexico. "It means more sleepless nights and more stress," says her daughter, Tania, "but it also means more time to strategize and see if any good can come out of this."

Tania, who came to the U.S. with her family when she was nine, has been by her mom's side for her entire ordeal, which started in 2007, when Valenzuela Gonzalez paid a notario $7,500 to help her get a work permit. The notario's offer turned out to be a scam, and the paperwork Valenzuela Gonzalez filed simply alerted immigration authorities to her unlawful presence here. The authorities then started deportation proceedings against her.

But yesterday, Tania was not in the courtroom. Instead, she was forced to wait in the lobby because, unlike her younger sister who was born here, she is not a citizen.

The Denver immigration court recently moved from temporary offices to its permanent location on the third floor of a federal building at 1961 Stout Street. The security procedure at the new building allows U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants who have court dates to go through security right away, but it makes their undocumented family members wait in the lobby with stickers that say "Visitor" until everyone else has been admitted. Only then are they escorted upstairs to the courtrooms.

By the time Tania would have been escorted up, her mom's court hearing was over.

Speaking of "law breakers," do you drive at or under the posted speed limit? No? Then, you are a law breaker, yourself. In fact, by failing to adhere to traffic laws, you are MORE of a threat to public safety than some random day laborer w/o papers flagging down a pick-up to get work.

Undocument immigrants = "law breakers who are destroying America" Right-wing loons shooting and killing unarmed black youth without provocation = "exercising their 2nd Amendment rights"

Just send her back to Mexico if she has that much money her life will be fine. You call us "self entitled racists" but who really is " self entitled" here? Do you think that just because you can drag your kid into a neighboring country you deserve to stay there? Try that somewhere elese and let me know how it ends..... they will all claim they are running from political tyranny in Mexico but by not paying taxes here and sending their money to Mexico to be taxed there they are actually helping the government they claim to be running from. Unfortunately they have been told the storys of America's golden streets and are too uneducated to care who is telling them this lie and why. Send them all home. Let Mexico deal with its own financial problems just like our country needs to do.

My friend was hit by a truck while crossing the street on colfax, the man driving the truck had no DL, no insurance. The truck was registered to his friend. My friend went through years of agony, surgeries and even lost his job, and home because of this tragety. It is now 10 years later, he still can not walk properly. And the man who hit him.... well be was never held accountable. My friend had to pay for all of this out of his own pocket. Who was right here? No one. Thanks illeagals. Why can't this woman open a salon in her own country? And who out there has beenable to save $7500? Something smells fishy here..........

I agree with Suni-she broke the law being here illegally, she scammed and got scammed! She should earn her way in just like the other immigrants had to-period.

oh but its ok for us MILLIONS OF LAW abiding ,TAX paying INSURANCE paying CITIZENS to suck it up right ????? Thats the problem ..... WE HAVE LOOKED THE OTHER WAY for to long !! Time to DO SOMETHING . On that we can agree

The system is only broken is as much that it didn't deport this ILLEGAL alien 6 years ago.

Julie Eaton

they own a business and had $7500. maybe they should have invested sooner in proper legal paperwork? i wanna go work in finland. i can't just sneak over there and get a job. we shouldn't allow it here either

Cheryl Upshaw
Cheryl Upshaw

It's so callous to tell millions of people to suck it up. It's smarter to change things to make it so their presence (which, for most of them, goes undetected for a huge amount of time, so how bad is this, really?) is less of a burden on everyone.

Cheryl Upshaw
Cheryl Upshaw

Second, I'm not saying, at all, that we should throw all the laws away. Our system was built in such a way that if something isn't working, we can change the laws and make things better. I don't know that just legalizing every immigrant is the answer, but obviously, something here isn't working.

You can press on your Caps Lock all darn day, and liberally sprinkle your posts with a hundred exclamation points, but your logic isn't great. First, these people are suffering. There is no "easy" ride here.

Suni Daze
Suni Daze

The things that you LOVE AND WANT --------- ARE WORTH FIGHTING FOR !!!! NO-ONE IS PROMISED an easy ride !! WE ALL PAY FOR OUR CHOICES !! You have to decide what you want ........ and when you get the consequences for your BAD CHOICES (you made em ) !!! DO NOT CRY AND WHINE ABOUT HOW messed up it is ......how HARD it is ...... How its not THAT SIMPLE !!! We live in a LAND OF LAWS ......and personal choice to break them is YOURS ALONE ....oh and evry other illegal that makes this choice !!

Craig Sydow
Craig Sydow

JAIL THAT ILLEGAL for tax evasion, and all the other laws she has broken. THEN DEPORT!!!

Cheryl Upshaw
Cheryl Upshaw

I agree that people should take the legal route, but it's not ever that simple. My mother recently became a citizen after spending nearly 20 years in this country with a green card. You would not believe the expense. You would not believe the time involved. And that's for a Canadian citizen, who is married to an American, and who has two American children, and who spent a huge amount of time legally in the country, paying taxes and contributing positively to society. ...It's just not that simple.

Steph Bell
Steph Bell

Yes! We need comprehensive immigration reform now so that valued community members like Imelda and Tania aren't ripped apart from their families and out of our communities.

Jerry Powell
Jerry Powell

the only thing that has been broken is the LAW why do some people think it do not aply to them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suni Daze
Suni Daze

I understand that . BUT THERE IS A LEGAL WAY TO DO IT !!!! You dont proposition someone to do something illegal to get you CITIZENSHIP . YOU LEARN the language you PAY TAXES AND INSURANCE AND BILLS !!! Not 7500.00 to the closest person that says they can get you an ILLEGAL CITIZENSHIP . !!! If she would have put her money and efforts into BECOMING A LEGAL CITIZEN THE RIGHT WAY ....she would be well on her way to being an AMERICAN . She tried to LIE AND DECEIVE !!! She is a law breaker and should be made an EXAMPLE OF !!!

Cheryl Upshaw
Cheryl Upshaw

(the killing dead part is probably why they want to leave)

Suni Daze
Suni Daze

So let me get this straight - ---- She tried to pay someone to get legal BY SCREWING THE SYSTEM !!! AND THEN CRIES WHEN THEY CATCH HER ??????? SEND HER BACKKKKKKK !!!!!!!!! With her LAW BREAKING FAMILY !!! All of you go back to your own country and make illegal attempts there to DEFRAUD your own GOVERNMENT and see how long that lasts for you !! At least your alive here !! They will kill you dead for that stuff in MEXICO !!!!!

The hardworking immigrants contribute more to U$ society than the lazy white-trash American welfare whores.

Regardless of what sycophantic leftist drones like you keep repeating, wanting our immigration laws enforced does not = racism. Someone should slap your mom for raising an idiot.

Showing up here illegally and then turning around and trying to worm her way in through paperwork ISN'T the way.

akcarol.pinard
akcarol.pinard

Really because I recently accompanied a friend to our local welfare office and it was full of Mexicans requesting translators in Spanish with 8 children running around unsupervised. Who are the lazy whores now? Ignorance is bliss I suppose.....Also as far as being low on the food chain and being replaced by Mexicans is concerned. ... just because some looser will do your job cheaper does not mean they are better then you it means that your boss is a cheap bastard who would rather hire unskilled and uneducated Mexicans and pay them 10 dollars an hour less.

stanley1

@DonkeyHotay But not more than the ghetto/barrio trash welfare whores that infest every city in this country? What's next, a commentary on the rash of violent street crime in rural America? Political correctness gymnastics sure is cute.

So your "friend" is a welfare whore and American employers are capitalists who seek the lowest labor costs?

DonkeyHotay

@stanley1 ... if you're so low on the economic food chain that some José que no habla inglés can take and perform your job as well or better than you, then you don't deserve a place in the great American "free market" economic system, regardless of where you were born, loser.

@stanley1 "I have a great job and could buy and sell your entire life 10 times over"

Yet you're terrified that some Mexican is going to fill an unskilled labor job in the U$A.

Stay scared, sucker.

@DonkeyHotay @stanley1 Ah......isn't that cute. Poor dipshit can't address his idiot post. I have a great job and could buy and sell your entire life 10 times over, moron.
