Karl Pierson's parents: We're devastated by Arapahoe High shooting

The Friday attack on Arapahoe High School continues to reverberate not just across the Denver area but nationally, thanks to coverage from major media outlets across the country.

The latest? Barbara and Mark Pierson, the divorced parents of shooter Karl Pierson, who took his own life after critically injuring fellow student Claire Davis (still comatose in critical but stable condition), have issued a statement in which they say the terrible events have left them feeling devastated.

As we've reported, Pierson entered the school on Friday afternoon armed with a shotgun, three Molotov cocktail-like incendiaries, a machete and additional ammunition. He was looking for Tracy Murphy, librarian and coach of the debate team, with whom he'd had some "controversy," according to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.

An older photo of Claire Davis.
During his search for Murphy, who'd left the building in what Robinson called an important tactical decision, Pierson fired off blasts from his legally purchased shotgun, with one of them striking Davis, seventeen, in the face in what appears to have been a random act. She might not have survived without the quick action of Arapahoe High school resource officer James Englert, who has not yet been made available to the media -- and the attempt by some reporters to track him down at his home earned a harsh rebuke from Robinson.

The sheriff's office has now returned custody of Arapahoe High to the Littleton School District. Classes have been canceled for the remainder of the week leading up to winter break, but students have been congregating there to leave messages expressing support for Davis.

In the immediate days after the shooting, Barbara and Mark Pierson stayed out of the limelight. But they've now released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Claire Davis and her family. They, and she, have suffered unimaginably, and we pray for her full recovery. We also pray for the entire Arapahoe High School community, as we know your lives are forever changed by this horrific event.

"As parents, we loved our son Karl dearly and we are devastated by what happened Friday. We cannot begin to understand why Karl did what he did. We ask for privacy during this unthinkably difficult time and hope that you will respect our need for time to grieve."

Mark also spoke to the Denver Post, telling the paper that he and Barbara had sat through "multiple disciplinary hearings" with Arapahoe officials, presumably over the aforementioned issue with Murphy, who Mark referred to as "the key player" when it comes to better understanding what motivated their son -- an assertion sure to raise the hackles of some observers.

In the meantime, the Littleton Adventist Hospital Facebook page has posted the following photo....

...and this message:

The family asks that no flowers or gifts be delivered or mailed. Thank you for your continued good thoughts and prayers for Claire.

One more thing: The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office has designated an e-mail address for those with additional information about the shooting: AHSInfo@arapahoegov.com.

Here's a 7News report synopsizing recent developments.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

Tracey Nichols,

People were respectful to the boy's parents. But the control freak dad doubling down in his denial opened his big mouth and blamed the teacher. That was so inappropriate. There is nothing this teacher could have done that would have called for that. This kid has a history of trouble fitting in and left another school. Little daddy god taught this boy to never take NO for an answer. He made this boy a more perfect copy of himself- a perfect a**hole, no preperation H required. Since he opened the door, we want to know what he did to make his kid turn out like that.

Take the scums picture down. Anyone who wants to look up his mug can google image it. We don't want to glorify the dispicable. Put up another beautiful picture of Claire instead.

The only "circus" around here is the endless whining from the Internet Outrage Contingent/Butthurt Brigade of which you are clearly a part of.

To the proprietor of the Anti-"Notoriety" Campaign above: First and foremost, let's not kid ourselves. The vast majority of your audience on this particular page has long ago made up their minds so the claims of any "disenfranchisement" are simply moot. Also, your petty ad hominem just shows how much of a hypocrite you are when it pertains to your complaints about my "liberal" use of salty language. Pot, meet Kettle. #HeadInTheSandMovement

Savannah, I am merely stating painful truth. BTW, Pamela, this kid actually FAILED to accomplish his goals of settling a personal beef with his former debate coach. Despite the endless insistence by some wannabe activist group, notoriety was hardly the motivator behind this kid's actions. Just goes to show that you are truly a Stupid Ignorant Cunt, indeed.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s graduated in the early 80s and there were some crazy ass bad people at my school, fist fights were pretty much a daily thing but not many shootings..........people then either had guns or had easy access to them so what has changed.......kids today do not have the same value of life as people did back then and do not look at people as people they look at them as objects, this is due to video games, social media, 24 hour news over analyzing everything and bad parenting, back then we did not have perfect parents but you would get lit into if you fucked up and it made you think about things

I feel bad for the victims, but I also feel bad for Karl Pierson's parents. God speed. And btw, I don't think this was a boy seeking notoriety. I think this likely was a boy coming from a very hurt place.

deborah_leigh

Gun violence is the result of a much bigger problem. What I would like to see addressed, is the state of mental health in our country...particularly our children. More and more we are seeing products of unhealthy mental activity in our young people. This kid was obviously dealing with something that was painful and that he couldn't be dealt with on his own. What I would also like to know is the relationship this teacher had with the kid. Was he red flagged by this teacher? Was he problematic for a while? Were their signs this was coming? Where were his parents in all this? If he had that many weapons, why didn't his parents know about it? It's not like you can hide that kind of stuff or behavior.

I think it's very important that we have a larger discussion about how we can get people the mental help they need as a community. Instead of seeing this as just another act of "terrorism", as some of you are saying below, see it as a cry for help. And I'm sorry, keeping information and sheltering people from facts is NOT the way to go. In fact, it's totally detrimental in my opinion. That's almost as bad as burning books! Lets not go backwards in the way of being informed. Knowledge is power.

This kind of behavior is not just something that happens out of the blue. It's something that builds. Shame on his support system for not seeing this sooner and being more involved. I'm deeply saddened that there are innocent bystanders harmed in the process. But seriously folks, we all need to take a look at how we are with everyone in our lives. And how our actions effect each other.

The parents stated "We cannot begin to understand why Karl did what he did."  Well here's a clue.  You spoiled his pampered little ass and brought him up as an "entitled" liberal.  Take some freaking responsibility, because it lies plainly at your feet.

stuka1

@mandymarie7835Um, we GET that you are taking part in some weird internet crusade to vilify, demonize, and deny the identity and the existence of the kid who did this.  But that's stupid.  Really. YES, we are mourning for Claire, and we grieve for her family. But Karl Pierson's family grieves too, BOTH for Claire and for the son they too lost, in the most horrific and incomprehensible way. AND they have to live for the rest of their lives with the horror and shame that the son they love did this. In the end, a picture is just a picture. Get over it.

Hey donk, instead attempting to insult everyone on the board,  why don't you apply your extremely limited skills in explaining how great liberalism is.  Why don't you tell everyone all of the great things your boy Obama has done for the country.

So you blame Hollywood and the US entertainment industry for glorifying the anti-hero as true principle genre of the last 50 years.

And you and your family have personally boycotted all those movies and t.v.shows on principle.

BackOffImStarving

@DonkeyHotay @BackOffImStarving You're right.  We should make made-for-tv movies, 60 Minute specials, write books, give them magazine covers, and drop leaflets from planes to make them anti-heroes.  Other than stronger gun control and better mental healthcare access, do you have any other suggestions?

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@BackOffImStarving "copycat actions"?

What kind of daft dipshittery is that?

Are all wife beaters "copycats" of the original wife beater?

Are all rapists "copycats" of some earlier rape that was publicized?

Are all murders "copycats" of the original -- Cain slaughtering Abel -- which has been "publicized and glorified" in millions of Bibles for thousands of years?

If a crime occurs in the woods where no one can see or hear it, does it still hurt the victim?

@fishingblues @stuka1 Stop being mean to my baby! You have to understand, he only lashes out like this because the idea of a real fight terrifies him. Please, please, whatever you do... don't anybody ask him what he did when the Vietnam draft rolled around. It makes my baby crazy.

@DonkeyHotay @fishingblues   Okay, somewhat valid point, although I don't do church, smoke pot or anticipate getting cancer.  Others will, however.

So tell me, how is your boy Obama's plan working out?  It is failing miserably and WILL bankrupt the country.  Then where do people go for help????

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@fishingblues @fishingblues ... when YOU get cancer -- and you will -- see how effective braying in church works.

Then again you could simply smoke the miracle marijuana that stoners repeatedly assert "cures cancer".

Libertoonian Health Care = there is no disease in our fantastical utopia, and if there is it cures itself by the same power of wishful thinking we use to conjure up our entire delusional dysfunction unsustainable political and economic platform.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay @fishingblues   Libertarian health care = Take care of yourself; If you can't, then family; if they can't, then church or charity.  For the 1% of the population (not 50%) that truly "needs" help, everyone chips in to help them (taxes).

Parasites need not apply.

Donk- instead of pointing your stinky little finger at Republicans, I asked you to attempt to defend your failed president's  plan.  Can't, can you?

fishingblues

@Covana @fishingblues Wow - #1 was passed "health care reform".  I suppose you consider that an accomplishment?  Fucking hoser.  I didn't need to read any farther.

by the way, is you name "donk"?  Fuck, liberals are stupid.
