Reader: "Westweed" is beating the pot story to death

Thumbnail image for potleaf205.jpg
The Denver Department of Excise and Licenses recently posted a list of fourteen stores in town that are now fully licensed to sell recreational marijuana on January 1. It's a story that has been dominating the news in Westword and in other media outlets around town and around the country, but commenter Kevon TheBruce Lei is already over it. In fact, he took time to post the following missive on Facebook in response to our post, "Marijuana: Fourteen Denver stores and other Colorado spots that could sell pot January 1."

Westword should just change your name to Westweed if that's all you're going to report on, day in & day out! Can't wait til the hype dies down, but then again, you'll just find something else to beat to death. What's next? Top 10 places for stoner munchies? We've graduated, maybe you should too!

Don Johnson,

Hey thanks for covering pretty much every urban myth/lie you could in that long ass post.

Let's just cover some simple misunderstandings that you either have, are misinformed about or are just plain lying about.

Those "homeless people" on the street, down all the alleys, etc. who would give their last dollar for drugs or alcohol. Um, no. You speak with a bias of not knowing. I speak with the knowledge of having lived on the streets, without any alcohol or drugs in my system.

What I saw on the streets was some with drug/alcohol problems, some who had been abused enough that they would rather the streets than the abuse, some who had mental problems, some who had no interest in being responsible whatsoever, and some who had been living paycheck to paycheck and the paycheck didn't come, so they became homeless. To oversimplify it that the homeless are a bunch of addicts/alcoholics is ridiculous and a Hollywood stereotype.

Next, marijuana is not a gateway drug or addictive. It may be an in between for a person with addictive behavior to pass through, but the majority of people who have smoked pot in their life never touched a hardcore drug, thus..you are wrong.

To quit using it, one must just stop and it's that simple. That's coming from a person who does have addictive behavior, as I just put down weed 3 years ago and no big deal. If I picked up a joint today, I wouldn't conclude it was because of it's "addictive properties"...I mean really, it's been 3 years, thus it would be just because I felt like getting high today(Not planning on it, as I don't feel like it.).

As for drug dealers cartels and all that taking over...well, yeah, if you mean the government, as the black market version of that will have to go on toward "greener" land. There is no need for the cartels when it's legal, ya dork.

As for your version of Colorado disappearing...the World changes and "your" Colorado will have much more money to put into schools and parks. What a shame, huh?

If you really despise the change that much, then say a real goodbye to Colorado and head to the South. It should be quite awhile before they pass any legalization of cannabis, as they like being stuck in the past and over controlling government much like you seem to.

What, exactly, was your reason for writing out this letter, were you breaking up with Colorado and thinking she had no other future lovers on the horizon? lol

Move on forward Don, the relationship is over and she isn't looking back at living the old ways with you. It's time for you to put yourself back on the market for another state you can love.

Wish you well and best of luck on your new romance.

GOODBYE COLORADO! After 40 wonderful years of enjoying this magnificent state, from Mount Elbert’s 14,433 foot peak, to the Arkansas rivers 3315 foot elevation at the Kansa border, 14,600 days of sublime beauty, magnificent mountains and forests filled with wildlife, that offer spellbinding skiing, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, crystal clear lakes, rivers, and streams, endless prairies and plains, limitless fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, and the freshest air in the country, it is with great sadness and dismay that I bid you farewell dear Colorado, as you go to pot! As you turn your back to the unsuspecting citizens and voters of this once great state, who never believed for a second that there were enough “potheads” to pass Amendment 64. The shock has still yet to sink in as the majority of the populace has no idea what’s in store for them. Fortunately, 70% of Coloradans have had no reason to concern themselves with the wrath and depravity of the drug and alcohol culture that is quickly growing out of control all around them. But that’s about to change! There are just a few hours left before doomsday begins in Colorful Colorado. Before you turn from your majestic splendor, into the drug capital of the United States! It will be interesting to see how long it will take Denver to become just another Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia, or Baltimore, where crime and drugs run rampant. Or how long before Colorado turns from being a great place to raise children, to being the equivalent of raising them in hell. The out of control drug and alcohol use and abuse in this country has been slowly but methodically rotting away at its moral core for decades, but at midnight tonight the devil takes a giant step forward, and mankind and morality take one giant step backwards! The potheads, stoners, drug dealers, drug lords, even the Cartel from beyond our borders have won a major victory over the naivety of the general public who typically ignore and turn a blind eye to an already out of control and disgraceful epidemic of social blight. Colorado, as well as the rest of the country has ignored the escalating problem of drug and alcohol use and abuse over the past few decades, and the consequences it creates. Every taxpaying citizen pays a huge penalty directly and indirectly because of the drug and alcohol epidemic in this country. The average Coloradan or American citizen doesn’t get into the Cities very often where the numbers of homelessness have skyrocketed recently. If you live here you see thousands of homeless people every day scattered around as you travel. What we don’t see, but have to realize exists, are the additional thousands who are in the alleys, hospitals, day shelters, jail or prison, or dead! Most of these people, yes, they are people, would trade their last dollar for a joint or a beer! Because they live in a state and a country, that has been ignoring their plight for decades! Addiction recovery programs in this country are a complete failure. My dear fellow Coloradan, you can rest assured that starting at midnight, tonight, 2014, the numbers of these unfortunate human beings will be rising dramatically in the near future! You can rest assured that all the associated costs to address this problem will be rising dramatically in the near future! You can rest assured that the children in Colorado with the increased exposure, availability and consequent temptation to try or experiment with it, if they haven’t already done so, this “legalized” “gateway” drug, they will be doing so in the near future! If you think drugs have already been an issue in our schools, you haven’t seen anything yet! You can also rest assured that marijuana “is” a “gateway” drug to more addictive, powerful, even deadly drugs, just as a beer is a “gateway” to stronger alcohol for the alcoholic! Goodbye Colorado as I’ve known you for 40 years of good times. Hello depravity!

Westword is an alternative newspaper, if some of you haven't figured it out yet. It has, constantly, covered that which the regular news wouldn't cover thoroughly, since the Rocky Mountain News was bought out. Even before then, it was a good alternative. If you don't like reading something, you don't turn to that page or click on that link. If you wish for news that is trite and boring..the Denver Post, Colorado Springs Gazette, etc. are readily available.

It's as simple as this, if you don't like Rock music, then don't tune your radio station to a Rock station. Duhhh

Well I'm flattered about the attention! Thank you! Freedom of speech goes both ways. I do however still pick up the magazine weekly for the concert updates, have for years. Just seems there's a lot more important issues to report on. You dont need me to tell you that. Looks as though I'm not alone.

Legalization on Jan, 1 may be the only thing that gets brain dead stoners out of their parent's basement.

So yes. I think that is big news.

As far as normal, respectable people go. I don't think they could care less.

Westword is giving the local view on a story that is being followed by every major news agency in the country and around the world. This is historic. I actually got a text message from my older brother last night about this. (He just turned 60 and lives in Atlanta) He and I are very different politically, but he is thrilled to see this happening and hopes other states will follow suit. :)

He's most likely the personality type that if it wasn't weed it would simply be something else to bitch about. You're doing him a favor because if he couldn't exhaust his pointless and not well thought out opinion somewhere he'd explode. He should be thanking your for providing the platform that not only enrages him but helps cure him.

It is messing up my Facebook profile. I am curious about the news, but now all of my recommendations are for pot pages.

There's no way they could have reported that information sooner, Xander. The state just issued their license last week, and the city of Denver didn't release their list until Friday evening.

Was happier doing the research myself. Don't want to have to camp overnight or wait three hours in line.
