Big photos below.
Editor's note: William Breathes became the planet's first professional medical marijuana critic when he joined Westword in 2009, and since then, he's emerged as the local expert on all things cannabis.

Today, he lists his ten favorite marijuana concentrates of 2013.

Check out his choices below, and click on the accompanying links to read his original reviews of the shops that made the cut.

Number 10: Dry-ice-extracted kief -- Pure

best.concentrates.2013.10.jpg
Pure specializes in ice water-extracted hash, including one blend that looked more like dark amber tree sap than hash. I was assured it was pure plant material extracted with water, then whipped into a taffy-like consistency. But to me, the dry ice hash was the standout. It was fairly priced at $20 a gram for the blended, eucalyptus-smelling red powder and it was the perfect addition to bowls and vape loads for an extra kick.

Number 9: Mixed hash -- Artisanal Medicals

best.concentrates.2013.9.jpg
I was interested in the $12.50-per-gram icewater hash, which I was told was "dab-able" on a skillet or nail. It looked the part and was broken down into shiny, waxy pellets that melted and bubbled on top of a bowl or screen but didn't really hit the dab-able mark. Nevertheless, it was some of the best-produced icewater hash I found all year.

Continue to keep counting down the ten best marijuana concentrates of 2013.

Concentrates are so overpriced, I know people who grow buds just to make hash, and when they run out, they buy buds wholesale, process it into oil, and still double their money. Sometimes, when I see an extra good batch, I'll make a trade with them. I get 15 grams of shatter for every ounce I trade, so if $40 a gram is "perfect", they give me $600 worth for 1 ounce of weed, and then say thank you. The funny thing is, I know some people who wont even smoke weed anymore, just oil, but the ones I know who make it crave a bowl of weed every time I see them. if a gram of shatter that costs $40 doesn't last at least 4 times what a gram of weed would last, you're getting ripped off. And I've never found a gram of hash that gets me 4 times higher than a gram of weed.

There is a reason WW calls itself a "magazine" and not a "tabloid"....doesn't disguise anything.

Thanks Bill breathes. She also went on to say this is what I voted for. That is impossible as regulations hadn't even been worked out yet. Fix it Colorado!

Concentrates are not limited in potency and can be sold recreationally. Edibles for recreational do have potency limits though. And yes, to work in a rec shop you have to be badged by the state Marijuana Enforcement Division. Liqour store clerks do not have to go through as many hoops.

Was told concentrates and edibles (over a certain thc concentration limit) are illegal under Colorado retail laws. Also that in order to work in retail marijuana industry you have to apply for a mmj support badge, effectively giving the marijuana enforcement division carte Blanche access to every aspect of your life. Is this true or just MMJ crowd inventing stuff? Do liquor store clerks also have to do the same? Curious.

@Monkey  "I get 15 grams of shatter for every ounce I trade"

And you whine and complain about this?

28 grams of bud might yield 4 or 5 grams of clean oil ... after all the extra hassle and expense to make it.

@Monkey "so if $40 a gram is "perfect", they give me $600 worth for 1 ounce of weed"

Really?? You're whining about receiving the equivalent of $600 / ounce for your "weed"?

Do you even think before you post? Were you STONED when you wrote this?

FreeTheWeed
FreeTheWeed

Nonsense!

Good oil comes in around 80% THC, that's 4x stronger than most bud.

Does it cost 4x as much?

Now factor the reduction in weight from bud to oil of 8 or 9 to 1 -- a pound of bud yields 50 - 60 grams of oil at best.

Now factor in the hassle, costs and time.

Oil has always been the best value in THC per $.

@Aaron LeForce  ... A64 = a CONTINUATION of Marijuana PROHIBITION in Colorado.

Only idiots and fools think otherwise.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@Chad Hill ... that's EXACTLY what you voted for, moron.

Were you too stupid to READ A64, or too stoned to comprehend what it proposed before you voted for that festering turd?

YOU -- and ignorant bong-sucking fucktards like you -- DESERVE EXACTLY the MASSIVE REGULATIONS and HUGE NEW TAXES you morons voted for.

*** Now Bend Over and get REGULATED, Bitch! ***

DonkeyHotay

... and how many concentrates are INDIVIDUAL user/stoners/patients allowed to make for themselves under this "legalization" that Wasteweed keeps pimping, eh Billy?

Exactly what is the CRIMINAL PENALTY for any individual user/stoner/patient caught manufacturing even a single gram of concentrate for themselves?

Clue: it starts with an F, ends with a Y, and has ELON in between.

*** REGULATION WORKS! ... for suckers and chumps who prefer a GOVERNMENT FIST rammed up their ass ***

@DonkeyHotay

Who's complaining or whining? I don't care if people want to pay too much for their oil, just like I don't care if they pay too much for their edibles. I don't pay for any of it, I make my own or trade with others. I was just informing the few people who read this crap that the oil they buy in stores is overpriced, and the people who make it are laughing all the way to the bank/safe in the basement.

Monkey

@FreeTheWeed Nonsense! And you did the math for me.

According to this article, $40 a gram is "perfect", so yes, it is 4x as much as weed.

And according to your math, a pound of weed would yield $2400 in oil. Roughly the same wholesale price of weed.

I've done the test, smoking a 1/4 gram of weed and comparing it to smoking 1/4 gram of oil. And I can assure you, I wasn't 4x as high smoking the oil, even though it tested at 76%.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@Monkey ... even at full retail, Oil concentrate is still a good or better value to the consumer, especially when the price is equal to or less than 4x the price of bud.

There have been ads in Westweed offering it retail as low as $20 / gram, which would be a fantastic value in terms of $$ per THC.

Your connection who gives you 15 grams of shatter for your 28 grams of bud is beyond generous, you're getting way more shatter than they get from processing an ounce of bud and that's not including their time and expense to make it ... heck, at 50%+ return oil for bud, you could make a fortune brokering their services, keeping 25% for yourself.

hth.

FreeTheWeed
FreeTheWeed

@monkey ... Those are the retail dispensary prices that fools like Billy pays. Oil is less than $40 at most outlets, as low as $15 gram from a source.

Only a fool would think they can get 4x higher given the physiological limits of THC uptake.

A given quantity of oil will last 4x longer than bud for those not attempting the folly of getting 4x higher.

So your original assertion of concentrates being "so overpriced" still fails in the face of reality.

Try again to make a valid point.

DonkeyHotay

@crillpocolypse ... only an IDIOT would claim that I -- or anyone else -- know everything about everything.

Which is exactly why Wasteweed's laughably absurd assertion that Bongsucker Billy has become an "expert on all things cannabis" simply by visiting and reviewing a few dozen retail dispensaries is so FUCKING IDIOTIC.

Keep sucking, stoner, it's your only skill.
