Update: Last week, we told you about the stabbing death of eighteen-year-old Anthony Benavidez at a Thornton trailer park; see our previous coverage below.

Shortly after their arrival at the scene, members of the Thornton Police Department took a seventeen year old into custody on suspicion of committing the crime, but his name wasn't released owing to his age. Now, however, he's been ID'd as Matthew Trujillo -- because he'll be tried for murder as an adult.

According to the 17th Judicial District DA's office, Trujillo, who will turn eighteen on September 4, was advised of the charges against him at a hearing last Thursday. But several days passed before district attorney Dave Young announced that he'd be put on trial as an adult.

The charge? First-degree murder after deliberation.

No booking photo of Trujillo has been released to date. But he'll make his first public court appearance at 8:30 a.m. on January 21 in Adams County District Court.

Continue for our previous coverage.

Update, 10:58 a.m. January 7: Earlier today, we shared details about a weekend homicide at a Thornton trailer park. Now, the Thornton Police Department has released the name of the victim: Anthony Benavidez, age eighteen. In addition, the TPD reveals that Benavidez died as a result of a knife wound; he'd previously been described as having an injury to his neck. Moreover, the department notes that a seventeen year old in custody for the crime is expected to be charged with first-degree murder. Get more details from our previous coverage below.

Original post, 8:50 a.m. January 7: There's still a lot we don't know about a homicide that took place in Thornton during the early hours of January 4. That includes the identity of the victim, described by the Thornton Police Department as a juvenile, and by a distraught friend as having just celebrated his eighteenth birthday. And while a TPD rep confirms that a seventeen year old has been taken into custody in regard to the crime, authorities have not yet mentioned a charge or determined if he'll be tried as an adult. Photos, video and more below.

At around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, according to TPD spokesman Officer Matt Kandt, cops responded to a report of a male with a serious injury to his throat at the 4200 block of 100th Avenue -- specifically the Pine Lakes Ranch mobile home park.

Upon their arrival, Kandt says officers concluded that there'd been an altercation between what he describes as "juvenile males," with one so seriously hurt that he later died of injuries that have not yet been detailed by representatives from the local coroner's office.

CBS4 notes that two teens were initially detained by cops on the scene. However, only one was formally taken into custody.

Adams County prosecutors haven't settled on an accusation thus far, but Kandt predicts that "it's going to be one of our murder charges."

Another look at the scene.
Could more arrests be in the offing? "That would only be speculation on my behalf," Kandt replies -- but he does stress that the investigation remains open.

An Armed Society is a VIOLENT Society!

Just "law abiding gun owners" exercising their "right to self-defense" against anyone and everyone they fear ... like the gutless trigger-happy cowards they are.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/14/justice/florida-movie-theater-shooting/index.html

(Florida) -- In a dimly lit Florida theater, Curtis Reeves got into an argument with another moviegoer over texting. The two men exchanged words that gradually became more heated and Reeves felt something hit his face.

Reeves, who minutes earlier had gone to seek a manager's help to stop the texting, this time reached into a pocket in his pants for, police say, a pistol.

He later told police he feared the man was going to attack him.

Reeves, a former police officer, pulled a gun and shot once, hitting Chad Oulson in the chest and Oulson's wife, Nicole, in the hand she was using to grab her husband in an attempt to calm things down.

As the victim struggled to breathe and fell onto two other patrons, Reeves sat down. An off-duty deputy five seats over charged toward him and grabbed the gun, which had jammed.

Chad Oulson died later at a hospital. His wife's wound was considered non-life threatening.

On Tuesday, Curtis Reeves, 71, made his first appearance in court for a charge of second-degree murder. Reeves' attorney, Richard Escobar, tried to persuade Circuit Judge Lynn Tepper that the former police officer was actually the victim in the incident and that Oulson was the "aggressor."

Police said despite Reeves' claim that he was in fear of his safety, this was not a case for Florida's "stand your ground" defense.

"Working with the state attorney's office it was determined that stand-your-ground does not fly here in this case," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation had determined that there was no physical contact during the incident Monday afternoon at a theater in the Tampa suburb of Wesley Chapel. It was popcorn, thrown by Oulson, 43, that struck Reeves.

Teens are NOT Adults ... why charge them as such?

What kind of knife did the knifeman use? Did he buy it legally?

As long as we allow easy access to knives, we allow knife murders to continue. Knife-nuts would rather give everyone a knife instead of supporting common sense knife-control laws, even though studies have shown knife owners are more likely to cut themselves than non-knife-owners. We don't need teenaged boys killing each other with knives just because the knife industry wants to keep selling knives. It's time to stand up to those merchants of death, and restrict the sale of their precious tools of destruction to trained chefs only. I'm not anti-knife, I'm pro-knife-control, and I don't want some whack-job to be able to walk in a store, buy a knife, and kill me. It's just common sense.

@DonkeyHotay

Your obsession with guns is disturbing. Even when the article is about someone getting stabbed, all you can think about is how someone else got shot, in a different article, inside a theatre that bans all weapons.

REMEMBER -- LAWS DON'T PREVENT COWARDS FROM SHOOTING FIRST !!

@DonkeyHotay yes why do we always look at someone and say throw the book at him..........17 is so young and society is prepared to take a mistake and create another victim of the prison system.......40 years with the adult prisoners ...will that make him a better person?

@DonkeyHotay the rules don't apply to gang-bangers, illegals and donkey boys.  Hang the little fuck.

@justmyopinion "yes why do we always look at someone and say throw the book at him"

It happens more often when that "someone" is of a different race/culture/social strata than the majority.

Just another example of the Institutional Racism, Hatred, Prejudice and Bigotry that still permeates American "society".

It's unlikely this kid will be able to deploy the "Affluenza" defense available to wealthy white teenagers.

@justmyopinion The reason wee have 17 year old children committing such crimes is because we have moronic, bleeding-heart liberals like yourself making excuses for them at every turn.

@fishingblues @DonkeyHotay so blaming and pointing fingers and assuming is exactly what not so intelligent individuals decide to do. Find GOD in your life and put him first.......God be with you and I will pray that you will find peace for your heart some day soon

@DonkeyHotay @Monkey   Golly donkey boy, I would have guessed bombs.

Now let's address your union (un)educated fucking moronic response.  You can't change from singular to plural in a sentence.  "Weapon is firearms" - are you fucking kidding me?

As to your trite, overused, valley girl sayings, "wait for it" - FUCK you are not only stupid but also annoying.   Why didn't you add the ubiquitous, infantile "LOL" to top it off, genius?

@fishingblues @DonkeyHotay

Well let's see what information to we have to go by to judge this person

1. Trujillo......that makes him hispanic or do we know for a fact that he was not adopted or something of that nature.

2. 17 is close enough to being an adult that it is ok to throw him into prison.

Now those 2 pieces of the article make everyone think al of this is ok.

Let's take a look at another recent murder that took place on Colorado......17 year Siggs.......he cut up a body, hid portions of the body in his home, and had been studying forensic science and mortuary science for many years....does an individual like that deserve prison for life?? YES...but now we have a 17 year old that we are all assuming is such a big bad gangster with no true evidence or knowledge of any such thing and you all are prepared to throw the book

NOW HOW IS THAT JUSTICE
