Pot profiling? Man says Kansas hotel accused him of toking because he's from Colorado

The WaKeeney Super 8.
Around this time last year, we began hearing reports that cars with Colorado license plates were being profiled by law enforcers in other states looking to make marijuana busts.

But are similar assumptions being made about Coloradans even after they reach their out-of-state destinations?

That's the claim of one man, who says hotel personnel in Kansas accused him of smoking weed in his room just because of where he lives.

We found the following late December post by Denverman86 on TripAdvisor.com. The review of a Super 8 in WaKeeney, Kansas appears under the headline, "Colorado Travelers Beware."

super.8.wakeeney.kansas.2.jpg
A look inside the WaKeeney, Kansas, Super 8.
Here's his item:
I stayed at this hotel recently. I ended up paying a $180 for one night and a basic room. I had the initial charge for the room, then was charged an additional $100 because they claimed I smoked marijuana in my room and somehow my vent shaft from my bathroom was connected to the room above me? And children smelled marijuana? I did not smoke marijuana in that room. I am from Colorado so they must have assumed it was me. They had three cops with a drug dog going door to door knocking at 1 a.m. The cops never knocked on my door. The drug dogs never marked my room. Yet I was still charged $100 for marijuana smoking.
We present this account not to cast aspersions on the WaKeeney Super 8, which we're confident is a wonderful place with plenty of fine amenities, but as a reminder that when it comes to marijuana, Colorado is currently its own world -- and as a result, plenty of folks from neighboring states are apt to see us as the equivalent of visitors from another planet.

One on a higher plane.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

More from our Marijuana archive circa March 2013: "Marijuana profiling of Colorado cars happened to me twice in one trip, says Westword writer."

I drove nearly half a day through Tex-ASS of all places without so much as a glance from the state troopers or even local police. Apparently, these folks complaining about being "profiled" are doing something else that is drawing the attention of allegedly overzealous law enforcement -- for instance, driving like the typical self-entitled yuppie douche that is becoming too common in Denver metro and elsewhere.

Taylor Lawrence, not all....just an overwhelming majority. @ Danny Butt Boy: Just put a huge black dildo up your crusty rectum as your endless obsession with the president CLEARLY DEFINES you as a racist closet case craving B.B.C. (and I don't mean the major network across the pond, either).

I travel quite often around the USofA and I have to say I will be traveling less until the rest of the country catches up. We have tons of sun, beautiful mountains, all pro sports teams, great food, great brews and legal weed. No need togo anywhere else and when you do go you just end up asking yourself why you left. Why visit these states let's start keeping our money here at home and build this great state into a USofA benchmark.

It's pretty much routine to get pulled over for "speeding" in Nebraska and Wyoming now.

And everyone thinks people from Georgia are backwoods racists. I personally would rather have the pothead stereotype(haha).

I am from 15 miles from WaKeeney and have driven back to Kansas a few times lately. I've never had any troubles. I'm sure they profile pot smokers, but I don't think its only because of your license plate.

No surprise here! I won't drive out of the state of Colorado, strictly because of garbage like this. The fact is, until those states obtain representatives with a clue, this will remain the norm.

Makes me scared to travel! I don't want to be profiled just for living here.

As long as we can still make the assumptions about the people from other states.......way too many to list lol......i.e. "your from arkansas".....therefore you.must be a stupid hillbilly!

I'm very open with my use of pot. I don't give a shit who knows that I use it. I have been since I was 12, and have no plans to quit. It's a beautiful plant, and a miracle medicine. I'm gonna burn one right now. Cheers!!

I don't really care what people think, although, it is kind of annoying that everyone assumes you smoke pot. I DON"T, never really liked it when I tried it, and never will. I don't care if others smoke it, in fact I think it smells good (from a distance) Just not for me. I also don't like getting profiled as a pot smoker either, which happens alot, because I'm a "mellow" laid back person anyway, so people have a hard time believing that I can be that way without being high.

If you're road tripping with Colorado plates be careful. We have become a magnet for police.

I have been out in the Chicago area visiting for the last week and I have multiple people on a daily basis ask. It's crazy. I also had a cop pull me over in Kansas for my front license plate, and then wait 30 mins for the K-9 unit to come and sniff around my car. It was ridiculous.

It would be a crime to charge someone from Africa an additional rate, but discriminating against someone from Colorado.....That's reasonable.

I haven't had that happen. I've had people make really awkward conversation about how I'm from Aurora, like it's the most crime-ridden city in America.

I got pulled over in Texas. The officer admitted to profiling, because I'm from Colorado. I got charged with possession.... for a roach in the ashtray... I don't use my ashtray... that roach was months old.

Only puerile pot punks (PPP's going forward because I'm way too lazy to type that out anymore) stay in a Super 8 for $180.

@Monkey ... good thing that lyin' Brian Vicente, mendacious Mason Tvert and bullshit Betty Aldworth included clauses in A64 that explicitly allow for discrimination against marijuana users, eh?
