Reader: I'm a safer driver when I'm high

colorado.state.patrol.driving.under.influence.of.drugs.3.205x205.jpg
We received a lot of feedback from our post about a driver who crashed into State Patrol vehicles while allegedly under the influence of pot, with much attention paid to a spokesman's concerns about people new to pot taking the wheel. Among the comments is this one, from a reader who thinks weed might have actually prevented an accident.

from 0 states to half the country, from low 20% approval to almost 70%, love and freedom are conquering prohibitionists and republiCANTS

been in 1 accident in 20 years because i was sober and aggressive...had just gotten off a long day at work, still wish i had smoked...lucky to be alive

marijuana keeps my calm and focused, my pain at ease....lowered anxiety, aggression, increased patience, caution, paranoia to be safe....

marijuana helps me drive, and i will smoke it till i die, my GOOGLE crew will be driving all our cars soon and accidents will almost disappear...

Actually, there is evidence that regular smokers are barely impaired behind the wheel. It's the occasional user who is more dangerous.

You forget that there are many who would prefer a plant rather than a pill prescribed by a doctor. Otherwise, a benefit to having the childish people around pushing the limits at least creates defined lines & laws to follow. Let's just hope it doesn't go to the extreme you mention since prohibition is not beneficial.

Drunk people run stop signs. High people wait for them to turn green.

Please read the studies below.  Recent studies are showing people that are high (only marijuana) are just as safe as sober people in most instances.

... The results to date of crash culpability studies have failed to demonstrate that drivers with cannabinoids in the blood are significantly more likely than drug-free drivers to be culpable in road crashes. … [In] cases in which THC was the only drug present were analyzed, the culpability ratio was found to be not significantly different from the no-drug group.”

REFERENCE: G. Chesher and M. Longo. 2002. Cannabis and alcohol in motor vehicle accidents. In: F. Grotenhermen and E. Russo (Eds.) Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutic Potential. New York: Haworth Press. Pp. 313-323.

“Cannabis leads to a more cautious style of driving, [but] it has a negative impact on decision time and trajectory. [However,] this in itself does not mean that drivers under the influence of cannabis represent a traffic safety risk. … Cannabis alone, particularly in low doses, has little effect on the skills involved in automobile driving.”

I know of at least one scientific study that showed habitual marijuana users were safer drivers when stoned than when sober. They attributed this to the brain's chemistry adapting to the presence of the THC as well as that drug's side effect of making one hyper focused. It's only one study, but it is interesting and probably worth further review.

Yes, because self-entitled, over-privileged suburbanite assholes have this "right" to drive like raging maniacs on publicly funded streets and highways.

We will have to hear more people getting busted due to "Pot" for every reason now that its legal..its the way they make the system..suddenly the numbers are up!!! Thats just crazy..people didnt just start smoking because its legal..it cost between 21 and 30 percent more to buy from shops..you do the math..everybody knows somebody that grows..sells..to shops or has an mmj card and thrres the same amount of drivers high now then ever was!! They legalized it for one reason alone...MONEY...THEY WILL MAKE IT HOW EVER POSSIBLE NOW!!

I don't necessarily agree with the reader's comment, but for those of you comparing alcohol and pot intoxication - we can tell you don't smoke weed! It is like comparing a marathon to a mall walk, and it's absurd. "Be willing to pay the price for driving high!" Where do you people get your edumacation?

Well that's nice Shawn. Fortunately for you, hippies don't hate anyone so you keep on wasting your energies. =)

I have heard a similar statement from people who drink alcohol and drive. Usually something they say until they hit someone or something then they blame everything but themselves. Smoke ....drink ...do whatever but be responsible and don't muck it up for everyone else

Yeah, and when I was in my 20's I thought I was a better driver after several drinks. I was of course wrong, just like the. "Reader" is. With life experience he/she will see their mistake. Untill Then be ready to pay the price when you smoke n drive.

They make way too much money to say shit about anything especially when booze is readily available.

No way to know...the driver could be absolutely awful when sober and might try to stick to the speed limit when high. Not really a good goal but hey, there really HASN'T been a test to figure out at what point you're an impaired driver.

Valium does the same thing he's preaching about for being able to comfortably live on. It's 1/4 The price of legal weed and is a more controllable high if even that. I took Valium years ago for anxiety & when I moved here 9 months ago, I quit cold turkey. Now I'm back on the Valium because of a blown out L4/L5 disc & surgery I had yesterday. Off topic, these pot smokers are really getting on my nerves. Some still remain laid back and out of the limelight like true adults. Others just want to push it to see what they can get away with before cities push back and put that shit back on the illegal market and ban it all together. Pot smokers need to calm your tits.

Have you ever driven in Boulder? I feel like cheering when people keep it to only 5 miles under the limit.

The truth is that we have insufficient data to support claims one way or another at this point due to marijuana's historic Schedule I classification at the federal level.
