Big photos, video below.
Major streets near Cheesman Park were shut down for hours yesterday, with Denver police enforcing closures from mid-afternoon well into the evening.

What happened? A man reportedly fired shots out of his apartment in a building near 10th and Race. When police finally gained entry, however, they found his body: He'd apparently taken his own life.

Look below to see details, photos from the scene, a video and more.

First word of the incident was tweeted out by Denver cops about fourteen hours ago at this writing. Here's the first message....

...plus one followup....

...and another....

...sent within the hour. Officers didn't uncover evidence of anyone being hit by the shots, but given the dense population in the area, not to mention the proximity to a park used by families and Denverites of every description, the risk presented by a person firing wildly from what was later determined to be a second-story unit in a complex at 1077 Race Street was extremely high.

When the gunfire stopped, the police waited for a search warrant, all the while keeping the streets closed. Here are a series of photos taken around 6:30 p.m. near the scene by Westword web editor Adam Roy:

Finally, around 8 p.m., members of the Denver SWAT team were able to access the apartment. They found a dead man inside. DPD reps later told the media that he appeared to have taken his own life.

A short time later, streets were finally reopened, and this morning, residents of the area are able to move about freely again -- albeit with undoubtedly vivid memories of a very unsettling night.

No one sees the gun as the problem because unless it was firing completely without human intervention it was ultimately a person that caused the event.

Doesn't seem like a sad ending to me. Sounds like he got what he wanted.

Yet no one sees the Gun as the problem here. Thank the stars we had a governor with the gumption to implement some Gun reform. Scary situation esp so close to the Women's day shelter.

If the guy is shooting out into the streets from his apartment, it shouldn't take hours to get into the apartment. Do you really need a warrant at this point when innocent people are in harm? Until the gun is taken away from him, everyone around was in danger. Can't believe they waited hours. If suicide wasn't his mission (which they had no idea of knowing), this could have ended badly. The police continue to disappoint with their poor decisions.

Far more people commit suicide than homicide yet, you wouldn't get that from watching/reading the news.

MANY more people contemplate suicide, or attempt it, than actually complete it.

Had a similar situation in Windsor Gardens a couple years ago, only the guy didn't start shooting until after the SWAT team arrived. At that time, the various news organizations refused to cover the story, saying they didn't report on suicides (the guy eventually shot himself). It took months for me to find out what happened, even though the incident happened in my neighborhood. Denver seems to have a lot of news censorship.

uhm all suicidal issues end that way, that's why they call it suicidal. duh ! I'm really surprised at how many people lack the comprehension of words and their meanings.......suicidal (adjective) 1. deeply unhappy or depressed and likely to commit suicide.

Denver Police waited for a search warrant? I don't believe it for a second! I'm sure they were also disappointed that they had no one to beat the shit out of but a dead man once they gained entry.

It has been show statistically that when suicides are reported in news media there is an increase in suicidal behavior following those stories.

@DonkeyHotay @FreeTheWeed Instead of pointing out inadvertent typos, (Damn, he left off an "n".  Call out the retarded donkey boy.)  why don't you tell everyone about your massive ignorance instead?  Let's see, at last count the donkey boy:

1. Thinks socialism and communism are the same thing.

2.  Can't figure out the relationship between a singular and a plural noun in a sentence.

3.  thinks oral fixation and anal retentive are the same thing.

So, donkey boy, which is more egregious?

Golly, and free thought he/she/it was your butt buddy.
