Big photos below.
In most cases, crashes involving RTD buses take place during busy commuting hours. But that's not the case with an accident that happened near the intersection of Mississippi and Platte River Drive.

A bus struck a passenger vehicle during the wee hours, when traffic is typically very light.

And the results are tragic: The driver of the car was killed by the impact.

This is what we know so far.

Here's the first tweet from the Denver Police Department. The time stamp is 2:13 a.m.

Not long thereafter, reporters with local media operations were on the scene, including Noel Brennan of 9News. Here's one of the photos he tweeted....

...as well as a second, accompanied by a particularly gruesome factoid.

In addition, a CBS4 rep shared this photo of the other vehicle involved, and the terrible damage it sustained:

The bus driver was not injured in the crash, and no passengers were on board, since the bus was bound for RTD's transportation center at the time. An RTD representative at the site has reportedly confirmed that the driver will undergo drug and alcohol testing -- standard procedure in incidents like these.

At this point, there's no information to indicate who was responsible for the accident. Expect a detailed investigation, particularly given the sad results. In the meantime, the DPD has just confirmed that the intersection is open once again.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

Not surprised my son and his elementary class was in a RTD accident where the bus driver rad a red light and my son was left with broken bones and some how the driver got off and RTD paid for none of my hospital bills... Screw RTD!!!

How much do you want to bet the dead person was drunk and ran a red light.

I've seen RTD buses blow through red lights and pull out into oncoming traffic without signalling many, many times. I was at the scene of their last fatality on Lincoln street and recall that incident a year earlier when a bus drove around barricades and was spotted going the wrong way on I-25. I have heard that their contract with the city shields them from lawsuits as well.

Most RTD are very careless and don't give a fuck. Not all just most so you drivers just relax.

This was my uncle, that was my cousins car. I don't even know what to say. He was coming home from work, he doesn't drink or do drugs. He was also obsessive compulsive and never take a left turn. He was the slowest driver EVER!

This sucks.

I can tell you how many times they just put their blinker on for two seconds then I swear they don't even look when they merge. Also, they suck at turning. They are the scariest drivers

and since they are a transit agency they get right away so they are not at fault sucks huh

I'd be willing to bet it's the cars fault. This is on Santa Fe where it merges with Plat just south of Mississippi. It's a one way. The Platt is in between north and south bound lanes. Unless the bus hit the car at Mississippi and drug it far or the bus ran a red light at Mississippi I'm betting it was the cars fault.

Not sure what happened but I'd bet it has something to do with trader joes.

RTD drivers are so aggressive... I see it everyday. I stay as far away from them as possible on the roads.

I do not want to die in a car. And I sure don't want 'gruesome factoids' tweeted about me if it should happen.

Where's the gruesome factoid? If you're referring to the deceased still in the car, that's usually what happens when wearing a seatbelt and you get plowed by a bus and die until the FD extracts you.

I wish you guys would stick to posting about positive things on FB. Love Denver Westword, but hate reading about tragic events.

Thank you for saying that. I am sure he is going to get away with a misdemeanor for killing my uncle, but hey, we weren't there, who knows what happened.

It's possible but my uncle was the safest driver ever. It used to drive me crazy how slow he was.
