Reader: Destruction of Leo's Smoke Shack hurts Breckenridge's historical culture

leos.smoke.shack.destroyed.205x205.jpg
Yesterday, we noted that Leo's Smoke Shack, a Breckenridge institution at the center of a hysterical Inside Edition report, had been destroyed as part of a new war on smoke shacks.

Many of our readers were unhappy about the turn of events, including this one.

Shadee Gray writes:

Overreaction for sure. That was culture they destroyed, historical culture of that resort. Tourist or not, still culture.

Aren't most Ski Resorts built and leased on Federal land?

The Forest Service must be very stupid; this wanton destruction pursued merely to register its contempt may come back on it manyfold.  As for the real estate corporations abusing their leases to ski slopes in our national forests, their corporate charters must be revoked and lift equipment must be operated in the public interest.  Halve the cost of lift tickets and let some of the generations of native-born Coloradans who have never skied experience what we have allowed large corporations to co-opt for the rich.

Great so does that mean I can go build a mansion on top of any federal park I want. Fuck with that logic... well lets go burn it down after all its mine too.

You are far from getting it straight. It may surprise you to know that the Federal Land is owned by the people of the Federation not the government.

ummmm I thought most people knew that these shacks have always been built on federal land for safety. And I don't mean safety meetings.

Let me get this straight... squatters built a shack on federal land where people go to break federal law and people are surprised when the feds come to knock it down? Thats like getting mad at the world when the sun goes down.

I think you should stop talking about this so other resorts don't destroy there's.

What about everyone who does shots and gets wasted while the ski or ride, even being so brazen as to hit a flask while on the lift?
