Reader: White people are discriminated against more than minorities in blue-collar 'hoods

Melanie Asmar's post about a report that found landlord bias against blacks, Latinos and families stirred up a lot of conversation among our readers. Some believed the results, while some doubted them.

This reader falls into the latter category.

Tom Spain writes:

I found that Denver is basically set up to cater to these "poor minorities." I lived in the blue-collar neighborhoods and found that white people are targeted and discriminated against far more often than minorities. Despite the fact that the "minority" neighborhoods I lived in had much higher crime rates. Just saying.

I've been called more racist names to my face by other ethnicities than I have said to their faces. I'm not saying I don't say those words but when I do it's usually for comedy.

You know I have experienced White Discrimination before and whatever everyone gets discriminated against at some point or another. Honestly I actually found it quite humorous. I feel more discriminated against as a woman then as a white person.

if you're white (and by the name Tom I'm guessing you are male) then you are set up for success in this country. You can go anywhere and do anything without being questioned. You can get away with things that minority groups are constantly chastised for. You don't have to worry about people singling out your loved ones for the way they look, talk, dress, or act. And in the rare case this does happen, racism toward whites is not the same as racism toward minority groups. YOU have the upper hand. YOU are the dominant group. YOU are not the ones facing institutionalized discrimination. I'd like to hear some of these examples of discrimination. If the only thing you can come up with is "my neighbors look at me funny" then you need to grow up because we have to deal with that kind of shit EVERY DAY.

Think Positive. Act Positive. Be Positive. Stay Positive. “The Miracle on Ice” – A bunch of young kids who just didn’t know any better. Many don’t remember this game was not the gold medal match. The USA advanced to beat Finland to win the gold medal. Colorado, if you don’t want to Win and be #1, you probably never will be. "Setup to cater to poor minorities..." It sounds like Tom has a little bit of bigotry to deal with before he joins adult conversations in the future.

No. Perhaps that's his perception, but he offered nothing in his opinion that builds a foundation of measurable facts that is required to actually PROVE a point.

Wonderful how he proves the point he's trying to argue. I'd love to hear his examples.

Sure people like to make fun of how square we are, but so far this white thing is really working out for me so I'm going to ride it as far as I can.

If your a white guy living in a blue collar neighborhood, you fucked up somewhere along the way. I don't know if you got the memo, but we run all the universities, run all the businesses, control all the banks and have 90% of the money. If that's discrimination then discriminate me all night long.

I'm white and male! Where this "success" you claim I'm entitled too? I feel that those who point the finger at white people and say things like this are just as ignorant as any other racist f***. I don't really have much and everything I do have I had to work just as hard as any one else to get, wasn't shit just handed to me cuz I'm white.

 @WillieStortz"If your [sic] a white guy ..."

... you don't even need to be literate in rudimentary English to succeed.

Never said you didn't work hard for what you have nor did I say you were entitled to anything. Just saying you aren't a part of a demographic that is systematically discriminated against. Read the comment more carefully. I said whites are set up for success...not that it is handed to you.

@skatebum2525  you have to factor in the sorts of values traditionally handed down by middle class White families vs. middle class Black, Asian, Latino etc. families. I come from a lower-middle class Irish/Scottish family in Canada.. I do not feel like anything has been "set up" for me as you claim - I feel like middle upper class WASP, Jewish and Polish/Ukranian families SEEM to make the up the hierarchy in this city, by far. Even Aboriginals have a big leg up when it comes to education benefits, tax deductions and enormous wealth of resources dedicated to Aboriginal people. these of course are to compensate for past wrongs and tragedies like the Residential school systems and the oppression of the Reservation systems - but for Aboriginal families who have maintained good values they are at a HUGE advantage because they already have a strong mentality towards working hard and they have special resources non Aboriginals do not - of course it is often stated that successful wealthy Aboriginals are the minority.. but success can be as SIMPLE as graduating high school and enrolling into a trade school and getting apprenticed, BOOM you have a liveable salary with tons of room for advancement and an opportunity to establish your own business down the road.
