Reader: What's the point of a pot rally when marijuana's legal?

420.cu.boulder.smoker.205x205.jpg
Our recent posts about CU-Boulder's decision to close the campus on 4/20 for the third consecutive year (even though April 20 coincides with Easter Sunday in 2014) brought some angry responses, as well as takes from several readers who seem to believe such bashes have reached their expiration date. Here's a pithy example of the latter.

Carl Wlodarczyk writes:

I'm not sure who cares about a pot rally when it's legal now.

It just sounds like law enforcement is gonna make a bigger deal out of it now..and so they may make arrests based on the illegalization of smoking in public..what once was just ok...isnt anymore..because now everyone is watching..sad but true..

I would imagine they would do it out of tradition. Plus the novelty this year with it also being Easter so more than one has risen.

There are a lot of hotels that are going to allow it,

Stopped going to those things years ago. Most of the crowd is illiterate and it's a total media orgy that enforces negative stereotypes of cannabis consumers.

Ain't no big thing like of course these dam law people make it out to be, its a time for all of us "buds" come to chill, mingle, get to know new faces and relax. Of course ur goin get ur idiot's here an there but really at any big gathering there's always an issue, Psh even at the jazz festival there's problems. Maybe we should cancel the taste or cinco de mayo or MLK rally. I mean come on wise up Colorado government, all us "pot smokers" are paying you guys pretty well..... Fuckers.

I know cannabis is legal now in CO but cannabis supporters are still being discriminated on here! Good people having to hide their personal lives because they fear losing their job. The fight isn't over for us until we are treated fairly across the World!

IT'S NOT LEGAL EVERYWHERE. It's barely legal, and there is still a long way to go before that.

I dont think its so much a "LEGALIZE THIS SHIT BRO!" rally, as it is "Dude.... its legal." celebration this time... Next year it will probably be "Bro... this strain is better than that. Try it with the deconstructed cheese cake bits... "

To bring awareness. Make it more mainstream kill all the myths people think about pot. Make it so people don't have to hide in their basement to smoke it. And most of all just inform the uninformed about how pots not just smoked but can be used for pretty much anything! Fual plastic rubber rope clothes. U can even use the plant to filter radioactivity out of the soil. And the just the tip of the iceberg.

This is only the first step in a long battle. Right now pot really isn't legal If you ask me. If someone from out of state buys pot where do they smoke it. They cant in the car, hotel room or in public. So where ? Pot makes people second class citizens. If your going to regulate it like booze then do so. Give us a permit to pay the city so places can allow people to smoke. We still have a long way To go if you ask me.

It was originally set up to be a peaceful protest, speakers from NORML and other pro marijuana groups would talk in civic center and petitions were going around like wild fire for legalization. GABF is an event you pay for to get to try hundreds of different kinds of beer, taste of Colorado is similar but with food, there is no such events at the rally downtown, really is it even a rally now? I'm not anti marijuana by any means, but I'm all for knowing when you've won and folks, you won, mission accomplished, it's legal, stay home and partake like you would any other day out of the year. Show the rest of the country that just because you smoke it doesn't mean you can't stay classy about it.

It's a celebration of freedom and common interest, but the City shouldn't be left with the cleanup tab. And, actually, why not a parade?

Amber Rae Schultes

"Oh idk, maybe it's because the event in itself makes people feel good". Denver hosts all kinds of events to make people "feel good", for example. Taste of colorado, cinco de mayo, pride parade... Idk it's weird. Taking 4/20 away is like taking away cinco de mayo just cuz immigration is legal. Or stopping pride parade cuz as of last year, gays can marry.... Those events are known to denver, and it would never occur to anyone to try n change that. So why change the 4/20 rally just cuz denver made it clear "no smoking in public". Well kids, let's rally to be able to SMOKE OUTSIDE!!

What a stupid question. Why are there beer festivals? Why are there wine tastings? Why do people ever gather around a common cause, or come together for a celebration?

Carl is one of the corporate media's many dupes -- marijuana is now like murder in Colorado in that you can commit a Class 1 felony with it; it makes exactly no sense to claim that "marijuana is legal in Colorado" if there remain a multitude of felonies for it.  People are still being arrested, persecuted, and convicted for felonies simply because of cannabis.  Pritchard Garrett shot his wife and himself to death less than a year ago rather than face the prospect of spending life in Colorado State Prison on just cannabis charges.  Outside of our overtaxed dispensary system, growing too much or selling any remains a felony.  To this day, many Coloradans only legal option to obtain cannabis, medical or otherwise, is to grow it themselves, if they are able, because the nearest dispensary may be hours away.  We need the 4/20 Rally, and we need it to galvanize opposition to Prohibition and to our non-representatives in the Mayor's Office, the City Council, the Executive Mansion, and the Capitol who continue to impose it and flout the express will of the People of Colorado as stated in Article XVIII, Sections 14 and 16 of Colorado's Constitution!

@RobertChase   ... so the LYING LIARS who wrote that piece of shit A64 -- lyin' Brian Vicente, rapey Rob Corry, et. al. -- and the prevaricating scumbags who promoted it -- mendacious Mason Tvert, bullshit Betty Aldworth, and YOU -- and the cum-guzzling media whores who regurgitated their lies verbatim without critique or analysis -- Michael fluffmaster Roberts, Wasteword, Bongsucker Billy, et. al. -- were all just SHITSUCKING Self-Serving SCUMBAGS when they repeatedly and continuously asserted and claimed that A64 LEGALIZED MARIJUANA in Colorado??

And that A64 is actually a CONTINUATION of CRIMINAL PROHIBITION against marijuana, which did NOT repeal a single FELONY statute, did NOT repeal a single CRIMINAL Misdemeanor statute, and merely COMMERCIALIZED Cannabis for the benefit of the Greedy Big $$ Dispensary Cartels and the Insatiable Pigs at the Dept. of Revenue ???

Wow !! ... who knew??

Myopic idiots like Robert Chase think Bob Beauprez would have a more liberal policy toward recreational drugs if he were governor and the rethuglicans controlled congress.
