Champ Bailey released by Broncos: Top Twitter tributes from ex-teammates

Tweets and more below.
The Broncos have released cornerback Champ Bailey.

It was a move the team had to make: Bailey was hurt most of last year, and when he wasn't, he was a shadow of his formerly great self -- plus, the decision saved the squad $10 million. And yet, there's no joy in seeing a surefire Hall of Famer be shown the door in this manner, as is clear from plenty of his teammates, who took to Twitter to share their emotions and pay tribute to one of the best athletes to ever wear Broncos orange. See our favorite tweets from players below.

Do people realize he only played like three games this last season? We'll be fine!!!!

He's been too slow the last 2 years, I started calling him Gramp Bailey. He can't keep playing forever.

Champ is unfortunately finished. He will be missed. Congratulations on a hall of fame career.

Saw it here first: Chiefs or Patriots will sign Champ. If he can accept a move to the Safety position it would be a smart move for all involved... I'm sure Manning would manage to throw him a ball or two.

You mean the guy who gets ten mil to sit in the sidelines? Then conveniently comes back when we are playing the worst team in the league Jacksonville. What a shock, Justin Blackman had 20 receptions and champ was "hurt" again

You are totally missing the point Daniel. You called him a "slacker".In his whole career he was far from that. A true leader, work out machine, and overall great guy. Slacker is a terrible description of someone who worked hard, gave his heart and sole to a team, and led by example. I didn't say it wasn't his time to go. He has slowed in recent years and probably should hang up the cleats for sure. And please, I beg you, don't ever call me an Obama supporter. I've gone to jail and not afraid to go again. :)

Gee douchebag Scott Santeramo - WTF aren't you going AFTER all the others on here - who are SLAMMING your 'Hero' ???

Rob Payne: "Anyone else who misses the majority of a couple years at work, generally loses their job. Regardless of injury or not. Champ was great CB and is a great person, but he is past his prime and we need the room for faster and younger as well as cheaper players." !!!

Legen Dairy We need players under 30, he was good but younger players were out running him...

Absolutely the right move. I've got nothing but respect for the guy but he was getting smoked on the regular.

Gee Scott, you're the IDIOT who needs a BRAIN, as Football is a business - something that Escapes an Obama-Voter like you & the effort that your hero showed in Past Seasons, the Bronco feel has LEFT Champ Bailey - that's why his ONLY chance now is a 'Role Player' - kind of like you're a 'Role Player' IDIOT !!!

Wow...people like you vote. So your basing his entire HOF career on the 2013 season? So I get your not a football genius, but I would highly encourage you to delete these comments so your friends and family know you have a brain in there somewhere.

Oh really Scott, as the 'Slacker' Handed HIMSELF hos Walking Papers with his 'Slacker' attitude about PLAYING during the 2013 Season & it appears the Denver Broncos AGREE with me = Duuuhhh !!!

Steve Litherland

He was a fantastic player but like all good players you reach a point in your career where you just can't play like you used to. I would have rather seen him retire at the end of the season than get dropped though.

Slacker would be the absolute worst description of Champ on this earth. You my fellow human are a complete idiot if you think so.

It's a business, and this was a smart business decision. However, Champ was part of the soul of this team, and it breaks my heart to see him go...

Manning needs to retire....the Broncos need a quarterback that will run, not one that stands there like a stiff dick...and not to mention Manning is not worth 20 million/yr.

I hope for Champ's sake the first part of your prediction happens -- and hope for Broncos fans that the second part doesn't. Thanks for posting, Jim.
