Photos: Joe Gorden ID'd as suicidal man CU-Denver cop shot on Anschutz Medical Campus

Joe Gorden.
Update: The man killed last night at the Anschutz Medical Campus (see our previous coverage below) has not been officially ID'd yet. However, his brother tells us his name was Joe Gorden, and he worked at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Tom Gorden says he and his siblings believe reports that Joe, in the midst of a divorce and struggling with alcohol, was suicidal. As such, Tom says they wouldn't blame the officer for firing the fatal shot if Joe had a gun and brandished it threateningly -- something that hasn't been confirmed yet.

According to Tom, Joe, 49, was born in New York before moving with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico (where Tom continues to live) in the early 1970s. He says Joe relocated to the Denver area about ten years or so ago.

"He was a family guy," Tom points out. "He'd been married a few times; he fell in love really easily. But he was very much into his job and doing things with his kids. He loved his kids" -- two adult children from one relationship, plus a pair of teenagers currently living in Colorado.

Joe worked as an X-ray technician at a CU facility -- perhaps the one to which he was taken after being shot by an officer who responded to a report of a suicidal man in an Anschutz Medical Campus parking garage around 7 p.m. yesterday, although Tom's not positive about that. But not long ago, Joe's life took a turn for the worse.

"He was going through a pretty bad divorce," Tom says. "It kind of caught him off-guard. She happened to tell him she wanted a divorce on their anniversary."

At that point, drinking became an issue, and it may have carried over to his employment. Tom believes Joe was recently fired, perhaps within the past day or so. There were also some Facebook posts that concerned his siblings; Joe was one of five.

The rest is speculation, and at this writing, Tom is still trying to find out if Joe was armed. "If my brother didn't have a gun -- if he held up a cell phone and was shot -- I'll have a problem with that," he acknowledges. "But if he had a gun, my family will hold no bad feelings toward the officer that shot him. My dad was a retired New York City cop, and in that kind of a situation, he would have done the same thing."

In the meantime, Tom would like Joe to be remembered for the way he lived his life, not for the manner in which it ended. "He was a fun-loving guy," he recalls. "He was the entertainment at any party -- not in a drinking way, but in a storytelling way. He told great stories."

Continue for our previous coverage of the officer-involved shooting last night at the Anschutz Medical Campus.

No one has left flowers where he died :(  Were are the updates on this story? People have a right to know if the cop was out of control.

... Suicide by Cop

Now watch the cycle complete as the PTSD tormented cop falls into depression and commits suicide himself.

One way to help stop these tragedies may be to complain to the ultimate decision makers, the Federal agencies providing the grant money.   I'm not a forensic accountant, but I imagine that tracing the CIT (Crisis Intervention Training) grant money back to BJA (Bureau of Justice Assistance) NAMI, JAG, and locally, CITAC, CRCPI, and other acronym agencies, might hold Denver accountable.  IMO, Colorado is so mired in "stakeholder partnerships" and sucking up grant money, nothing ever gets done.  Every Federally-funded program has compliance requirements, under the ADA, VOCA, VAWA, etc. Denverites need to file complaints, when appropriate.  When DPD's grant money is revoked, maybe they will be nicer to citizens.

Nobody's released this to the press yet, so here goes:

The CIT training is supposed to be voluntary for officers.  It's a key part of the program.  Denver makes CIT training mandatory for new officers.  This fundamentally alters the nature of the program.  Every officer is not going to be nice to citizens in distress; aggressive officers will bully and shoot.  Hence the CIT Memphis program must be voluntary.  Look it up if you like.

Denver PD has been bullying the "mentally ill" for a long time.  Look at #34 and #44 on a DPD 12 Use Of Force IAB form.  Suspected Impairment= Mental Illness  Observed Behavior= Mental Illness.  This is troubling - standardized boxes to check on a form officers fill out when an arrestee is injured or killed?  I wish I could show you this and am tempted to scan and post to a Dropbox, or to Twitter.

Currently, DPD keeps a database listing citizens as CAUTION:  MENTALLY HANDICAPPED/DISTURBED.  From what I hear, there are plenty of people contained therein who are perfectly normal.  No one ever gets told they're listed in this database, and if they find out, there's no way to remove themselves.   All it takes is one negative encounter with a DPD officer who enters you into this database, and thereafter 911 dispatch and every DPD officer believes you're MENTALLY HANDICAPPED/DISTURBED.  You can no longer report crime or have normal interactions with police, they react in a dismissive or negative manner.  This can create problems, e.g. your apartment is robbed and they won't take a report.

Denverites have complained, the media has reported, IMO real changes will only occur when DPD's grant funding is in jeopardy.

This is a terrible, tragic loss. Joe was an amazing human being who was going through an incredibly difficult time in his life. Joe was always willing to lend an ear and understanding to his friends. I can't believe he is gone. Joe, rest in peace, we miss you.

Yeah Im with Jayne Arerreh. Ive lost all respect for these guys anymore. I hope they shot him with a cell phone in hand. Joe's brother seems pretty adimant about serving up the vigilanty justice. And I support him. Modern law enforcement is so sad. You guys are getting outta control.

I knew Joe through a mutual friend, and he was a wonderful human being. I wasn't aware of the personal issues his brother addressed in this article, but regardless, I am devistated at the loss and the shocking abruptness to my friend's life.

Joe was kind, supportive, loyal and loving. That will be my lasting memories of him and I want to share my reflections of him with everybody out there. RIP my friend

Maybe he wasn't that serious about committing suicide and was running away from the police because he knew how dangerous they are......I guess they showed him.

Suicidal? Let's get a cop in here. You get to die and the cop gets to kill someone-- everybody wins.

Fuckin cops, small penis syndrome. To bad our country gives guns to run away cowboys and calls it law and order.

If he had a gun, the pigs would be tooting their horns all over town by now. Their silence means that they MURDERED another innocent un-armed person in cold blood. They are just getting their stories (lies) straight right now. This has to stop. We've been here too many times before.

Why do our cops have to shoot to kill??? They are trained to shoot at the largest body mass...in some situations this might be the best shot...but in EVERY situation???

I thought the cops are supposed to diffuse these situations not expedite them?

Be saved or get shot. Cops are the proof that guns and idiots should not be together. How many incidents like this should we tolerate? It's clear that those pigs don't have the intelligence, training or ability to handle emergencies like this but still have their guns and use them against society. Hope they'll get the Anarchy they deserve.

Anytime you want to accelerate the death of your loved ones if they are in distress, just call these guys. They sleep like babies after these incidents. What kind of women are these guys married to? They have to be some sadistic sick freaks.

Death by cop. With as trigger happy as cops in America are today, it's the easiest way to kill yourself around. Want to end it all and check out? Simple. Just go piss off any cop and you will get your wish in a matter of minutes.
