Greeley barber shop won't serve those who reek of pot, but if you smell like Greeley, stop on by!

Last October, when the Denver City Council was debating an ordinance that would have established fines and even jail time for home pot smoking that could be smelled from neighboring properties, we put together a list of the five Colorado places that smell worse than the pot smoker next door. Our top pick: Greeley, due to the aroma from the community's meatpacking industry -- and plenty of our readers agreed. But in Greeley, one barber shop finds the aroma of weed considerably more offensive, and won't serve anyone who reeks of it.

Here's the Greeley blurb from the aforementioned post:

greeley.meat.packing.plant-thumb-565x306.jpg
Our neighbors to the north are a meatpacking hub for much of the country -- and the resulting stench is capable of making national news. This past August, NPR reported about the community's efforts to change its reputation via new branding and the slogan "Greeley Unexpected," not to mention stink reduction.

"The city has taken steps to mitigate the smell, including the creation of an Odor Hotline, which residents can call to report and describe the stench," NPR noted. "Reports have declined significantly since the hotline started in 1995; there were 600 calls the year it started and just 25 in 2012. Also, the meatpacking plant now has a smokestack that further reduces the problem."

Nice effort, Greeley -- but our nostrils tell us you still have a long way to go.

Nonetheless, the folks at Hugo's Barber Shop in Greeley can definitely detect cannabis over Greeley's general scent, and have established a policy revolving around it. Here's a look at the sign on the business's front door, from the Hugo's Facebook page:

hugos.barber.shop.sign.jpg
A 9News report about Hugo's features an interview with owner Hugo Corral, who reveals that as many as 50 percent of his customers of late had the distinct smell of marijuana on their person. And he's had enough.

He argues that the aroma is disrespectful to families and children. In his word, "Just because it's legal does not mean you can come in here smelling like marijuana and not caring."

Hugo's Barber Shop in Greeley, from 9News coverage.
Corral described his approach as very controversial and said he'd been bashed on social media for the decision -- although recent posts on the Hugo's Facebook page are largely supportive. Here's one example:
For those that are being so hateful because of Hugo's decision, lay off the weed, it's affecting your minds way too much.... It's a clear case of Hugo doing what he wants. And no stoner is going to be able to say that he's wrong. He has the right to do what he wishes with his business and he has a right to DEMAND respect for his other customers from those that think they can go in smelling like pot....

Another Hugo's screen capture from 9News' report.
Although Corral acknowledges that some customers may stop patronizing his operation because of the pot-smell rule, he thinks more may stop in because of his emphasis on family friendliness. With that in mind, he's getting ready to move to what's described as a larger location, at 11th Avenue and 25th Street in Greeley.

To him, apparently, his personal war against cannabis fumes smells like good business -- even in Greeley.

Look below to see the 9News report, featuring comments from legal expert Scott Robinson, who argues that Corral's mandate is perfectly legal.

If you stink so goddamned much that people can smell you over Greeley, it doesn't even matter what the smell in question is. If your reek overwhelms the omnipresent miasma that is Greeley then you probably shouldn't even be in public. Go take a shower you nasty fuck!

I'm morbidly obese and a rabid cheeto eater like most of the posters here. I should be able to smoke and fart and take a dump wherever i want as i'm entitled and my mom told me i'm the best!

Ha I dont smoke , I dont get haircuts either, and I really have no opinion on a guy who puts himself on the street and chooses to die a slow death, but I am very close to deleting westword frm my face book if they cant find storys of human value, like how do those in greeley really fill about not knowing the consequence of the fracking toxins spilled over thier land during the floods, or something else with value to the public, smoke pot no haircut is limp dick shit

His place, he can refuse service to anyone , though people bring lawsuits all the time for discrimination.

Lol his choice, his business, it may or may not be his downfall. I just hate how old ppl think that marijuana is just so horrible, they may have experience in life but a lot of elderly are ignorant and stubborn.

His choice, but he could lose a lot of business. Wonder if he has the same rule about alcohol.

It's his business, he doesn't have to serve pot smokers, just like a store doesn't have to let people in with pets (service animals not included) and mcdonalds says they won't serve people with no shirt or shoes. There will be more business' that will start making policies like this.

Better add those places that have the 'No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service' to the list of discrimination And those specialty cafes/restaurants that only serve a certain type of food had better be sued for discrimination, too

Nancy L. Fowler-Stricker

Whatever happened to a businesses right to refuse service? You know, like 'No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service type thing? So people should force a business to provide service to everyone no matter what? Muslim and Jewish restaurants should be forced to handle and serve pork in their establishments? Vegan/vegetarian stores should be forced to serve/sell meat in their establishments? Muslim barbers should be forced to give women not of their family haircuts? SMH

You can't refuse to make a cake for gay people, but you can refuse to cut the hair of people who smells like weed?

I guess we need some proud stoners to sue like proud homosexuals.

It is his business and his choice. I am sure that there are more shops around town to get a hair cut.

Beverly Sanchez times change, rules and laws change, cigars, cigarettes, have horrendous-hideous smells, along with the bad breath and mouth cancer it causes. Everyone has a different outlook and it is because the medicinal side it has helped so many. This is a friend of mine who posted this on FaceBook-It's a good day my eight-year-old just received her medical marijuana card.- We really hope this helps her seizures and eliminates the possibility of a pretty evasive surgery. I personally have never been exposed to marijuana but sure glad that it's legal in Colorado and potentially gives my daughter an opportunity to have a better life. #redcard

Thank you Westword for continuing to bash a Colorado community and its people.  Greeley is a wonderful place to live, work and play.  The stereotypical comments below reiterate the ignorance of those who have never been here or who think that THEIR ""#@! don't stink. Grow Up!  What you're supposedly smelling is more likely coming from the numerous agricultural business throughout Colorado. Greeley has NO feedlots - hasn't for 10+ years. Maybe you should stop pointing the finger at one location (Who does that?!) and consider the fingers pointing right back at YOU.

Turning people away for their use of pot is stupid in this downtrend economy .... If this barber can afford to turn away people ... What is he really selling?

There are federal laws around public accommodation. Understand that as a place of public accommodation, you cannot make arbitrary decisions about the type of client you wish to service. They're probably going to get sued, and they're probably going to lose. Good luck paying for that expansion with what's left after paying the damages.

Stephanie - when were you in Greeley?  If it had been recently, you would know that Greeley is an arts community, full of great aromas.  Most of the businesses that were known for producing foul odors have made significant investments to reduce the problem.  Come visit sometime - give us a chance to change your mind!
