Reader: Jeep drivers are the worst in bad weather and everyone knows it

mitsubishi.outlander.snow.205x205.jpg
Our list of the ten cars whose drivers can be jerks on icy roads generated comments aplenty, with dozens of readers sharing their thoughts about vehicles that we should have included. There were a wide variety of suggestions, but one brand was mentioned more often than any other....

James Dean Estelle writes:

Hands down, the vehicle I see passing me like maniacs and ending up in the ditch the most are Jeep Grand Cherokees! Fun SUVs for sure, but it seems like the drivers are unaware that the road is covered in ice when they pass me doing 10 over in a blizzard. I guess it's a Jeep thing; I wouldn't understand.

They can bitch all they want till one of them is stuck in a ditch...

Bad weather or not they seem to like to lift their suspensions and leave the tires fully exposed to throw rocks at vehicles behind them. Has nobody here heard of mudflaps? They're available for a reason and relatively cheap. You can afford a lift but not a few bucks for mudflaps? I realize it's not required by law here but have some respect for other peoples' vehicles. Please :)

Begin rant. I guess. My S4 is a sports car, has AWD, and some very nice winter tires. Traction is great and yes, I do test braking ability on various surfaces and speeds. I know it's limits. It generally surpasses most other vehicles in both acceleration traction and braking distance especially when you consider how many people run all seasons because they're "good enough and it hardly snows in Denver" *cough*total BS*cough*. News flash, all seasons lose traction the colder it gets starting around 40F (similar to summer tires but less drastic). It's not all about snow traction but cold weather traction. Rubber gets hard when it gets cold. Winter tires use different compounds to improve traction in cold weather which we DO get a lot of in Denver. But you don't usually find me speeding sinceI'm too busy doing 20 under the speed limit or in a parking lot on the highway because people's (presumably like you) driving skills blow (often even in warm, dry conditions), they're not running appropriate tires, their vehicle is underpowered for high altitude uphill travel, or a combination. I grew up and learned to drive in Alaska. The roads up there are worse on a daily basis for months out of the year. Somehow people manage to drive faster and better, even those without studded tires, without running off the road or in to each other. Now how could that be? Skills and required winter tires and many run studded because ice is almost always present which isn't quite the case here. Not everyone has to drive like a grandma when it snows to be safe. I'm not advocating driving 90 in a blizzard, let's be reasonable, but you also don't have to always drive overly cautious because there's a little snow on the roads. Especially on an interstate. CDOT needs to begin to require winter tires for winter travel in the mountains like some other states do.

Could it be possible that they seem worse because we expect more from them?..just sayin'.

yes.. them and ANY/MOST people with SUVs. Ahhhhh.. I've got 4WD..I can go 65mph in the snow.. If somehow, having 4WD makes it impossible to slide, slip or not crash. NOT!

I've driven a jeep for a few years now. And I can agree.. XD

Hm I find it fascinating Kile Excitable that your vehicle has spent considerably more time in the shop

A lot of people in AWD vehicles are TERRIBLE drivers in bad weather, because they think AWD gives you the magical ability not to slide on ice.

There are just a lot of bad drivers. I don't think the model of 5he car matters, it's the idiot behind the wheel.

I got my Jeep Patriot due to a long commute on back roads in bad weather - avoiding the main highways because of shitty drivers. I don't speed in bad weather but am overly cautious keeping an eye out for those incautious assholes sliding across lanes or through lights like they can't grasp the concept or effects of operating a vehicle on ice & snow packed roads.

I love my Jeep! Whoever this reader is must drive a Prius. Do me a favor and stay out of my way.

My fav are the 4x4 drivers with bald tires and a phone in their hand. No wonder i70 is a train wreck.

Michael Beckerman

Absolutely not. They are among the very best drivers, actually. Most people that are smart enough to actually understand the value of driving a Jeep, are also the same ones that are smart enough to know how to drive them too - in any weather conditions.

I like my Jeep, and I drive like a grandma in the snow.

You've got to be joking me right!! I PLOWED through the New Years blizzard.... All the way across the country!! Not one problem. In denver drivers couldn't even make it across town, meanwhile I'm traveling the entire country!!

I think the obvious answer is Subaru drivers. Not that owning a Subaru makes you a bad driver, it's just that there are so many on the road that, by law of averages, some of those drivers are going to be shitty.

It's not the vehicle it's the driver.  Put down the phone, stop checking your makeup, eat that sandwich when you get to work, stop reading the newspaper, clear your damn windows before you get on the road, and realize you live in a state where, for part of the year, your rear wheel drive isn't worth a damn.

Disagree-Subaru drivers are The WORST drivers year round!

I'm gonna give this one to the front wheel drive car owners without chains on I70. Derp if you thought clear creek would plow their side of the divide, now your ass is sliding backwards! Morons.

I'm way cautious when driving my cherokee but have seen lots of wranglers spinning in circles before.

Any 4X4 or all wheel drivers. They all arrogantly speed but can't stop any faster than 2 wheel driver.

I don't have a Jeep, but they're definitely not the worst! The stupid Lexus drivers are...ALL OF THEM! And it doesn't even have to be snowing, they pretty much drive like idiots all the time.

Rodney Tripp

And to the stupid comments about vehicles not having 4wheel breaks... you're dumb! All vehicles have 4 wheel breaks... quit blaming the machines for peoples bad driving. That's just as stupid as saying "guns kill".

Sounds like non jeep owners are just jealous! Lol!

Might have four wheel drive, but there's not a car, truck, SUV or JEEP that has four wheel brakes to stop on snow, slush, ice.
