Reader: No weed but beer at 4/20 Civic Center Park event is a slap in the face

beer.glasses.205x205.jpg
Our post about liquor sales being allowed at a building at Civic Center Park during this weekend's 4/20 event amid restrictions against public pot smoking got a lot of people talking. Included among them was a reader who referenced a guilty plea in the DUI death of marijuana advocate Jenny Kush.

Jeff Williams writes:

Wow i can't believe this. i understand the business factor, but at a 420 rally. No weed but beer after a drunk driver took out a leading activist. What a slap in the face. R.I.P. Ms. Kush

Hmm... Well... I guess it must have been legal for the last 40 years then. Oh wait, it's been just as (even more so honestly) illegal for the last 40 years.

First CU shuts down boulder's event, funneling thousands of people up to Denver (because be honest, if someone's going to a 420 event, they're going regardless), now they add alcohol to the mix. I really feel like its going to lead to much more violence than before. Usually there's a few drunken people, but if everyone is getting twisted they'll be a lot more out of control than usual. The Boulder event went for years and years without any violence. (LOTS of littering though, if you're going PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF, YOU'RE NOT 12 YEARS OLD AND YOUR MOTHER IS NOT HERE), I honestly think its an attempt to encourage debauchery, giving the city an excuse to pull the same shit Boulder did. I don't even smoke (anymore, some things you just grow out of).

Serving beer at this is an attempt to get people blasted for bad publicity.

Only downside i see to allowing beer is the greater chance of a riot. Which would be duuuuuuuumbbbbbb.

As much as i want to bitch and complain about how unfair it is, Its also against the law, which 55% of us voted into our state constitution. Things always have a price, or a catch rather, and honestly im okay with giving up one day of smoking pot outside, so i can spend 365 day of smoking pot in the comfort of my private residence. Yeah its backwards as fuck, but dont go if you dont like it. Theres also a fuck ton of other shit to do this year, so dont let this bump in the road kill your vibes for whats gonna be a fun, fun day regardless of past differences. #mytwocents

Liquor leads to violence. You idiots are just adding fuel to the fire. I think the local gov approved the license, so when shit goes down they have enough to shut the event down for good. Watch your P's and Q's.

Facebook really is its own world; I am still looking for an example of a comment from there that seems to take cognizance of the content of the comments posted here.  For that matter, no comment from fb seems to be responsive to anything other than the misleading content of the article, but it is way more about posting a very short reaction than it is reading anything, isn't it?  You agree or disagree, fire off what is little more than a "yes" or "no", and move on.

I'll be smoking weed there and not drinking as its a 420 Festival. Unjust laws are made to be broken.

I never go to those events. Even so, with the shooting that happened last year they want to add alcohol to the mix!! That's just adding insult to injury....

Agreed, it's extremely shameful. This 420 party should mark the progress Denver/Colorado has made. The people of Colorado have spoken, they voted to legalize marijuana and by doing so increased revenue to the state. In response to that, the city wants to shame those that smoke and only allow drinking at an event that's intended for smoking. Just doesn't make sense to me!

A Hardcore slap in the face!! My plan is to Boycott the 420 Rally and just hit the Cannabis Cup both days . . . I still can't believe the city would do this, how shameful!!

Right, Michael; first you create the false impression that beer will be sold at the Rally, then you wring the last drop of interest out of the mistaken outrage you succeeded in eliciting, only there doesn't appear to be that much.

Couldn't WW try journalism instead?  There is so very little in Colorado, we are a nexus of societal change, and the opportunity to document these changes seems golden.
