Reader: Traffic in Denver is getting worse -- and here's why

traffic.jam.denver.i-25.jpg
We recently shared one site's list of the 25 most congested cities in North America -- and while Denver made the cut, it finished well above the top ten. Nonetheless, plenty of our readers decried what they see is a worsening traffic situation in the metro area, including this one.

Dollie Hendrix writes:

Being from Atlanta and living there, i would say Denver's traffic is worse, only because the road systems are outdated and can't handle the constant growth.

The traffic doesn't seem that bad for a city of this size. Even driving during rush hour downtown doesn't take that long.  And I wouldn't say that the public transportation system sucks, there are bus stops everywhere. Yes, the light rail is limited, but it's a good start. We also have a cool bike sharing program.

This is what happens when you build a railroad (Light Rial) track that sits empty for 57 minutes out of every hour down a narrow right of way (like I 25) instead of additional traffic lanes. Light rail reduces traffic by less than 1 percent and costs 54 million per mile compared to $4 million for a lane of traffic. At least an HOV lane pays for it self through fees rather than requiring a $32 per rider tax-payer subsidy for each RTD rider.

Many roads have traffic lights that are set where you hit every light red.  Instead of a smooth flow of traffic, the lights are timed for revenue generation.  Drive down Wadsworth or Colorado east of I-25 and see for yourself.

I blame the dolts who work in Traffic Engineering.  The lights are not synchronized because of the lazy recalcitrance of these "civil servants".  Why don't they get out there and do some studies of the worst intersections - or stretches of roads like the dreadful Colorado Blvd. where the lights have not been in sync for years.

We had 20 years of city stagnation due to childish acts in the rtf board and other areas.

I blame drivers from states notorious for bad drivers/inability to drive in snow/rain like CA and TX. Also a lack of public transportation other than busses. The Light Rail is a joke and useless to anyone not living a mile from a stop(basically 80% of the city). Coming from Chicago driving here is a huge a pain in the ass. Yes, I just said that.

in 2002 I was able to use cruise control from Orchard and i25 straight up through North Denver without ever hitting the brakes.

I was stationed out there...I know how they drive...I said Cali and Texas are the 2 biggest states we get transplants from. A lot of people are saying the same thing why the fuck you signaling me out bud?! @Michael Roque

Colorado drivers are certainly not to blame. ..nice try.

No its the influx of all the people moving here from Cali. Crowding our roads...jeesh.

Being from California, I can tell you that the drivers that come from there are definitely not the ones driving slowly. The limit there is 65 and everyone drives 80 in all lanes. haha

There'd be a lot less traffic if we had flying cars already.

You Coloradans sure love to complain about people moving here.

Hayley Richardson I use my cruise control all the time. Guess you don't know how to use it. Keeps me from speeding thru neighborhoods and the side streets. I can just put my foot on the brake easy as that. Or use the controls on my steering wheel. No need to keep my foot on the brake all the time in traffic like my grandma. That's another thing that slows people down. I can keep a better eye on what's around me on the road rather than trying to constanly check the speedometer. So there!

We just need a massive blizzard to put new folks in check with what this place really offers...lol...

Traffic is terrible but you're always going to have congestion on freeways. But with all the congestion and construction it seems like drivers have gotten worse.

Also, Michael Roberts: check this out: "SH 470 (the C and E470's) was originally intended to be I-470 and built with federal highway funds, but the funding was redirected to complete conversion of downtown Denver's 16th Street to a pedestrian mall. As a result, construction was delayed until 1980 after state and local legislation was passed.[116] I-470 was also once called "The Silver Stake Highway", from Gov. Lamm's declared intention to drive a silver stake through it and kill it." -From the Wikipedia listing on Denver

Naturally, it's worse. Fault was with government and the voters decades ago. My folks said they were discussing light rail in the 60s! then in the 70s. We have one of the worst mass transit systems, for population. In this state you still have to have a car, unless you live in a very small subset of the state.

How about: fuck off.

That sucks. I bet the roads are ten times better where you're from.

There's a station over there called nine-mile (you won't use it).

Do you mind leading the way back home then?

Be glad you don't live in Chicago, there's always construction, it's a nightmare to drive through!

I don't think anymore about this one, it's evident.

You would think with as much money as Denver spends on its professional athletes every year they could afford to fix the damn infrastructure. It is maddening and is the only thing that makes me not enjoy living here.

Denver traffic is like driving through City Park in the afternoon. If you want to know what it is like to get down and dirty come to Bangkok in the afternoon.

Why do you hate trains?

Well isnt that great that you have a shiny car that you can drive everywhere? Not everybody does, nor does everybody want one. Remember- the light rail is voted on *by* taxpayers, taxpayers who want it to exist.

@BlondyVanWeirden  ... the LIGHTS are in sync on Colorado Blvd.

It's the timid clueless idiot drivers who are oblivious to that synchronization and travel 10mph BELOW the speed limit, or wait 5+ seconds before going on a green.

muhutdafuga
muhutdafuga topcommenter

@BlondyVanWeirden The sick thing is that they are set, just not for smooth traffic flow.  They are timed so people will rush through changing lights, leading to tickets/revenue generation.  Colorado Blvd. is awful!

mm-hrmm

Thats because douchebags like you keep moving here.

philmeiklejohn

@DonkeyHotay @BlondyVanWeirden They are not even close to timed correctly dumba** they may be in the middle of the night when it is just you but not suring rush hour when a line of cars takes a few seconds to get moving only to hit the next light and the next and the next.

@muhutdafuga @BlondyVanWeirden

... the problem is clueless idiots who after driving the same SYNCHRONIZED roads every day for years -- Colorado Blvd., Broadway. etc -- are still too stupid and oblivious to realize that if they go LESS than the speed limit, or take 5+ seconds to pull their thumb out of their ass before they GO on green lights, they will ALWAYS MISS the synchronized green and catch a red light, or yellow which they always treat as red, no matter how long it is, or how much fast moving traffic is behind them ready to end their life.

Broadway is synchronized so perfectly that -- traveling the ACTUAL SPEED LIMIT -- anyone can go from Colfax all the way to Englewood without catching a single red light.

Now if only the brain-dead slow-driving timid imbeciles would get the fuck out of the way.
