Reader: New Jersey is the skid mark on the underwear of the United States

chris.christie.memes.8a.jpg
After New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made negative comments about Colorado in the context of the state's pot laws, Governor John Hickenlooper's office struck back, compiling lists showing Colorado ranked higher than NJ. At that point, things got personal, with loads of readers measuring the relative attributes of Colorado and New Jersey. Here's one particularly harsh assessment of the latter.

Mick Paul writes:

Denver was on the map long before rec. pot. New Jersey is the skid mark on the underwear of the United States. The only good thing about Jersey is Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band.

Abuse of power...how conservative, how Christie.  The pitiful thing is, Christie one of the saner of the republican presidential hopefuls.  So sad.

I grew up in New Jersey and have now lived in CO for 14 years. I refuse to let the comments of a few ill-mannered people influence my view of either state I love.

I disagree. Bruce Springsteen is overrated. My list of the 10 best things about New Jersey:

Actually New Jersey is the cesspool of the U.S.

There are good and bad to every state...it's the governor of Jersey that is the skid mark not the state or the people in it!!!!! And if Colorado wasn't so great why do we have sooo many transplants from everywhere else? That's been going on long before pot became legal.

One word... Jug handles. Every city, town or state has it's good and it's bad points but not allowing people to make left hand turns is just obnoxious.

I've lived in both places. NJ is better.

Statistically speaking, NJ has:

way less sex offenders than CO, with much stricter sex offense laws

safer highways

better education

less rapes

less elicit drug use

5 cities in the "Top 100 Safest Cities in the US". CO has just one. This takes into account several different crimes, including murder

Geographically speaking, NJ has the ocean, quaint beach towns, college towns with amazing restaurants, cute and friendly farm towns, forests, hiking trails with amazing scenery, trees, trees, and more trees, nice suburbs with history and charm, unlike the zero-character development sprawls in CO. All of you who are saying, "I've been there, and yuck!" sound as ignorant as someone who says, "I've been to the worst part of LA, therefore I know CA is gross!"

As for the people, many generations of immigrants have led to a society with more diversity, a better sense of humor, a MUCH stronger work ethic, and much more genuine vibe overall.

Also, NJ isn't overrun with meth houses and meth addicts. That's a plus!!

Overall, CO is geared toward young, white hippies. Anyone else in the world with a pulse who doesn't choose to follow a herd would much prefer NJ if they gave it a chance!

The people in Nj are more intelligent. And the roots are stronger. You ignoramuses are basing your opinions on stereotypes and fake tv shows. I've lived in both. Colorado is about 20 years behind in most ways. By the way who do you think buys all the weed you guys illegally sell?

Certain other socioeconomic factors present in varying degrees in all communities may have an influence on resulting crime rates. Obvious difficulties in the identification, documentation and measurement of these factors, however, precluded their application in this report. However top crimes include Robbery, Burglary, and Larceny with Motor vehicle theft rising. Annual rate of child abuse 64% now NJ you say something for yourselves and quit being in Denial

Best not to let one douche spoil it for the whole state. Christy was out of line saying what he said, but there is plenty to like about New Jersey. Not that I would ever move there.

NJ has 5 cities listed in the "100 Safest cities in America." CO has just one. This takes into account several crimes, including theft and murder. In fact, one NJ town made number 2 on the list! NJ has way less sex offenders than CO and way stricter sex offense laws. Actually, it has the strictest sex offense laws in the country, and CO has some of the weakest (CO was the only state that wouldn't implement Jessica's Law. It was only recently that it was implemented, and it's still a watered down version). NJ has the least rapes of any state in the country.

08820 (NJ town where I grew up): 1 sex offender per 38,097 people

Colorado zip where I live now:       1 sex offender per 350 people

lharrington820
lharrington820

@sixtwentysix @lharrington820Oh and I forgot to mention, NJ has the least REPORTED rapes of every single state in the country. Number one. Are folks from NJ that much more likely to keep their assault a secret, or are people from outside of NJ that much more likely to falsely accuse someone of an assault?

lharrington820
lharrington820

@sixtwentysix @lharrington820Because I own a house. Like I said, I gave CO a fighting chance. It's good to leave your roots  behind to gain some perspective.  I'm  sure many people on here have only lived in one place or the other, in which case, they have no business dissing the place they haven't lived. Having an opinion is not the same thing as having knowledge. I see a lot of unsubstantiated opinions as I scroll through the comments. And yes, it is less reported rapes, but the gap is wide enough to be telling.

Here's a fact:

08820 (NJ zip where I grew up): 1 sex offender per 38,097 people

CO zip where I live now           :  1 sex offender per 350 people

NJ has the strictest implementation of Megan's Law out of all US states.

CO has some of the weakest sex offense laws (It was the only state that wouldn't implement Jessica's Law until very recently, and even now it's watered down compared to many states). So, it would make sense that there's more rapes in CO than in NJ.

@lharrington820 @damu99@sixtwentysixLooks like your beliefs just aren't catching on.  It might just be because you sound like you're wound up on meth.  That might explain why you nervously made the same post twice.  Do you make duplicate calls when you are bothering the police?

@damu99 @lharrington820 @sixtwentysix  Wow, you Coloradans are fucking idiots.

I've only spoken at city council meetings, called the cops about 30 times, been on the news, there have been 4 swat raids, between are neighbors and us, the local special forces unit has a 400 page binder of 911 calls and incidents over the past 5 years. But your incompetent government (run by idiots like yourself) still doesn't think that's enough to close it down! I'm done arguing with dumb hippies who's brains are fried by smoking too much pot. Go back to doing what you do well.

@lharrington820 @sixtwentysix"and now I'm stuck next to a meth house with a one year old,"

Really ,and you havent called the cops at least ONCE?!?

Id be calling every day , but I guess you just like liviing next to meth houses.. Absurd....

lharrington820

@sixtwentysix @lharrington820I'm flattered that you've taken such an interest in trolling me. Typical Colorado response. "She's not following the herd?! She should leave!"

Judging by the immaturity of your response to the facts that I laid out, I can assume you're pretty young and do not have children. Do you want to know why I'm compelled to respond to these posts? Because I moved out here when I was pregnant, and now I'm stuck next to a meth house with a one year old, and I'm being fucked by the Colorado government who has little interest in protecting taxpaying citizens. I have to sleep with a golf club by my bed to protect my kid. The NJ government would never let this happen to their people. I grew up in a decent neighborhood, and my son deserves to grow up without seeing tweakers every goddamned day. And then to come on here and see a bunch of ignorant idiots like you slamming a state that actually protects their people is a little infuriating. But what do you know? You don't have kids. You spend your precious time smoking pot pretending that you know a thing about life.

Why haven't I sold? Because people from NJ actually have integrity. We publicized our case to protect others and prevent this from happening to anyone else. Unlike the typical Coloradan who sold the house next to a meth house to a family with an 8 month old baby while going on about, "what a great neighborhood this is!" You people have no integrity. As you have made very clear by your trolling efforts. Keep your thoughts between you and your friends. Anyone with sense sees right through your bullshit.

@lharrington820 Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself it is a nice place more than anyone...

Also, you're allowed to sell your home in Colorado.

I bet all your problems would be solved if you could just get back to New Jersey.
