Chipotle: Don't bring guns into our restaurants

Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America
Chipotle, a chain founded in Denver by CU grad Steve Ells, is asking that customers not bring guns into its restaurants following an incident in which open-carry supporters brought assault rifles into one of its restaurants in Texas.

"Historically, we felt it enough to simply comply with local laws regarding the open or concealed carrying of firearms, because we believe that it is not fair to put our team members in the uncomfortable position of asking that customers refrain from bringing guns into our restaurants," says a statement sent to us by a Chipotle spokesperson. "However, because the display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers, we think it is time to make this request."

Here's how the Colorado-based Chipotle characterizes the Texas incident:

Recently, participants from an "open carry" demonstration in Texas brought guns (including military-style assault rifles) into one of our restaurants, causing many of our customers anxiety and discomfort.

In response, the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America started a petition -- headlined "Burritos, Not Bullets," which is also the campaign's hashtag -- calling for Chipotle to implement "a clear policy prohibiting guns in restaurants." The gun-law reform group also posted two photos of the alleged incident, including the one above.

It is legal in Texas to openly carry "long guns," though it's illegal to openly carry handguns. In Colorado, it's legal to openly carry any type of firearm, though local governments can prohibit the practice in certain municipal buildings. And Denver has rules of its own that prohibit openly carrying a firearm anywhere in the city.

Chipotle isn't the first business to request that customers leave their guns outside. Last year, Starbucks did the same. And earlier this month, Jack in the Box followed suit.

Well Ashley, I'm guessing you don't work as a nightclub doorman as I do. You see, I also work in a "Gun Free" place of business. Nobody is allowed to carry any weapons including myself. Somehow every time gun play occurs, the criminals involved don't seem to respect that policy. One of these nights, I'm going to get my head blown off because I'm not carrying my gun out of respect for the policy. When some asshole starts shooting people one by one in some business you are standing in, you may change your mind. No shootings ever happen in Mexico.??? How about the hundred plus kids in Norway?

Someone is going to feel threatened and 'stand their ground' and blast these guys.

The Supreme Court (in Heller) ruled the only gun right under the constitution is the right to home defense. They said regulations are OK as long as they don't totally prevent having a weapon for home defense. So the open carry people are worried that open carry could be regulated, and trying to make open carry seem normal in advance of the next Supreme Court case regarding guns.

Call the police. I'm tired of baggers and their ideas of perceived threats behind every buritto. Let the cops sort it out.

I would leave immediately and call the police to come out and check whether they were good guys with guns or bad guys with guns. Not my job to figure that one out.

I don't really want to be in any place where people walk around with any guns - unless they wear a law enforcement uniform (and are, obviously, real officers and agents.)

Right, now someone is definitely gonna shoot up a chipotle. They would've been taken down by a hero with a gun before but now.... *facepalm*

That's not the issue. People who respect the law will no longer carry guns in Chipotle. Now, only criminals who knowing that law abiding citizens will be unarmed will be carrying a gun. Before, the criminal would think twice, not now.

I haven't read most of the other comments... but my 2 cents: Everyone cries bloody murder that the 2nd Amendment needs to be respected but forgets that people (or a business) still have their 1st Amendment right. Its a private business... they can do whatever they please. I'm sure the lil high school student, making $9.25 an hour, at the register was slightly taken back and uncomfortable with a bunch of gnarly dudes walking triumphantly in her store with large assault rifles. If you don't like Chipotle's stance on open-carry in their business... you know where the door is. There are ample businesses who feel the same way... deal with it. I own guns and I respect their private business and their decision.

The NRA promotes a society where everyone actually does have to carry a gun to feel safe. I know that's not the society i want.

Let's just be honest, it is not acceptable to carry a visible loaded weapon in a public place, you are doing nothing but inciting panic which seems an awful lot like yelling " fire" in a crowded theater doesn't it? No responsible gun owner should support these retards....but I suppose that's an insult to our mentally challenged friends.

Greg Jabuki DeRuckus

It's real life idiocracy. Why must gun nuts try to force the idea that walking around armed is actually required to feel safe in our daily lives. Sorry but the 2nd amendment became obsolete after WW2. What are you going to do with your little pee shooter assault riffles against cruise missiles, tanks, jets, drones, and icbms. We have a huge problem with the police not even knowing when the proper use of deadly force is warranted much less the decision making capabilities of every other trigger happy gun owner. Sorry but having lower standards for owning a gun then a car doesn't make me feel safer in anyway.

um, perhaps the the two dumb asses with the rifles are the ones that would try something dumb, that's the point of the discussion.

Ridicule them until they lost their temper, and then stick those prosthetic penises right up their asses when they made an aggressive move. I have some mad 1st amendment skillz.

That was the literal translation of Sturmgewehr, the original, and has been used by manufacturers and historians since the 40s. It is a specific, universal designation.
