Reader: Bicycles should only be allowed on trails and sidewalks -- not roads

bicycle-dirt-path.jpg
A recent Comment of the Day in which a reader described Colorado cyclists as douchy and selfish certainly touched a nerve. A huge number of readers vented their spleen on the post, with this one offering a vivid anecdote and a sweeping suggestion about how to reduce conflicts between bicycle riders and car drivers.

Becca Doyle writes:

I just hate when they think they can keep up with cars. I was coming down a mountain in Boulder. The speed limit was 55 and I came up on a bunch of cyclists blocking the ENTIRE lane going a bit over 25. After about 15 minutes there was a caravan of cars behind me about a half a mile long. I politely asked through the window if they could get to the side a little bit. One of them flipped me off in response. I finally got to the point where I could pass them safely and did, continuing at the 55 SPEED LIMIT. The other cars behind me followed my lead. When I got down into town, I stopped at a red light and all of a sudden this cyclist SMASHES his fists on my window. He was screaming at me and threatening me because I had passed him. He literally went out of his way to fly down the mountain to roid out on me. Fuck cyclists. They should ONLY be allowed on trails and sidewalks. I don't even know how anyone thought it was a good idea to let them on the street.

@Sheri Tabor sounds like you're just not paying enough attention when you're driving if you've "veered into oncoming traffic" numerous times maybe just slowing down and acting rationally would be a better alternative to actin like an idiot and swerving into the other lane when you see someone on a bike, you don't HAVE to whip around them just slow down and stay in your own lane before you hurt yourself or somebody. Perfect example of self entitlement right here Someone who doesn't respect anyone else on the road when driving (veering into oncoming traffic cuz a cyclist made slow your crazy ass down a little bit) but expecting everyone else on the road to respect her regardless...Oh yea! Maybe it's because her and her car have been "chosen" for driving two lane roads hahaha

You made my point. All those people behind you were irrationally angry because they had to slow down their vehicles. How dare someone force a driver to rotate their ankle 30 degrees to the left and apply 5 pounds of force to a brake pedal! Force a driver to pay attention to the speed and direction of their steel killing machine? Outrageous. I'm just as bad by the way, I'll totally run you over.

Yes. I hate when they ride on the roads in the Colorado mountains. It's very tight turns and we drive big trucks out here.

I have had to veer numerous times into the oncoming lane because you guys cant find enough respect for a 3000 pound vehicle to drive on the road that has been chosen for it ! Are you just to good to go on a bike path instead of a two lane skinny road ?

If you can't follow the rules of the road, get off the road. This goes for everyone. Cyclists and pedestrians need to have appropriate reflective clothing when it gets dark and cyclists need to have MORE LIGHTS on their bikes and their being so they can be seen!

He'll no, cars are filled with self entitled jackasses

I think these anti - cycling posters should have to spend a week riding around on a bike so they can see first hand how dangerous it would be to ride on sidewalks and how much debris is in bike lanes. There's a 3 foot rule for a reason. Please don't try to "teach me a lesson" while I'm legally riding my bike on roads and endanger my life just because you don't want to slow down and give me a bit of space.

You can't get anywhere without taking a road. Not everybody lives in Oz.

some cyclist act entitled which drives me nuts. Wana be on the road, then respect stop signs just like cars need to

Sorry would ride one behind the other and not 2-3 beside each other. I have almost gotten hit by a couple of cars because I had to move over for the riders. Know there are bad vehicle drivers, but we all have to think about each other.

Bonnie Heffelfinger

I would feel much better about the bike riders if they had to buy a license once a year for $5-$10 and they we're ride

And cars should be illegal because they are bad for the environment.

Michael's moron comment= 1 like. Adam's statement about how much cyclists suck =6 likes. 5 more people agree that you are the douchebag mike so do us all a favor and ride your bike into oncoming traffic.

here in PDX its acceptable to ride in the streets, but honestly i wouldn't say every street is a good idea, i never got why bicyclists choose a busy crowded traffic-y street when in reality just one block over is a no traffic street that has a bike path, also there are jack asses on either side that give a bad name to both riders and drivers, just be mindful of more than just your self, its a good rule of thumb, btw i am a cyclist.

John if that was directed at me the Next time if youve ever even ridden a skateboard when someone pushes you into the curb with the side of there truck am i more worried about trying to get them on video, or avoiding be ran the $% Over in a bike lane people have always been cruel the day we see that change ha.

I don't think they should be on the sidewalk either, but they seem to be less of a problem in Denver than your average bicycle.

I don't mind car drivers who share the road. I have issues with the ones who think they don't have to adhere to traffic lights, stop signs, etc. I try to give them a lot of room because I know I'd be scared driving around bikes, but, when they don't follow the traffic laws, they make it scary for everyone. It's scary to think you might hurt someone because THEY are being a daredevil.

Tami Gibson

I have seen so many bicyclists running stop signs, and red lights and veering out into traffic, no wonder they get hit!

Unless we change the law. The people riding their bikes to work are never the problem. It's the people that think they're Lance Armstrong, riding for fun that cause the issues. Those people are riding for leisure, why can't they go to all of the BEAUTIFUL mountain trails all over Colorado to bike their little hearts out?

Tyler Scott Aguilar
Tyler Scott Aguilar

Ive definitely had people try and legitimately run me Over on my skateboard even in where we should be a Bike lane three feet to the left since all of Denver has Side walk paved so terribly. He probably has a lot of pent up anger from people in cars messing with him as do i. Ill simply put this here would you rather fix a bumper super easy or break someone beyond repair or kill them.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Do you ride in a bike lane or in the middle of the street? Bike lanes are scary to me, but they make more sense. It's the people that weave in and out of full traffic that freak me out.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

I shit you not, man. We both had NO idea how he caught up to us. At the bottom of the hill there was a lot of traffic, so maybe we were stopped at a red light long enough for him to catch up. I have no idea, but my friend and I were in disbelief both at his speed and his aggression.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Even if it wasn't their fault, why would they want to risk that? I guarantee drivers aren't going out of their way to hit bikes. All it takes is one wrong move by either party, but the difference is that the cyclists won't ever stand a chance against a giant hunk of metal.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Sharing would involve cyclists staying literally 3 extra feet to the side. Which they refused to do. I should not have to swerve into traffic or get hounded by other drivers behind me to avoid killing these people.

Tyler Scott Aguilar
Tyler Scott Aguilar

What happens when you cut in front of all these bikers and you know Its a windy Road you cant see the next turn and you all decide were gonna Drive by in the wrong lane to pass and theres a car coming up look how MANY more lives you have just endangered.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

It was in Boulder. It was a few years back, but I DOUBT they changed the speed limit since then. It was 55. I remember taking a video of it because it was so ridiculous. And yes, it was a weekend and there was an ASSLOAD of cars behind us, all trying to rear-end me. That's the main reason I needed to get the hell around them. For MY safety.

Chris Weis
Chris Weis

to endanger pedestrians? that's why the law is in place.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Not if we CHANGE THE LAW. Which is what should be done.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

I've got no problem driving slow. But when I'm in the front of a dick ton of cars trying to rear end me out of anger, it's dangerous for ME. That was my issue.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

And I'm not saying there aren't any shitty drivers, by ANY means. But a bad driver is going to do some serious damage to a bike-not the other way around. It's not safe for either party.

Kris Herzberger Potter
Kris Herzberger Potter

No! bicycles are vehicles! They should be allowed to ride on the roads provided they obey traffic rules. Sidewalks are for pedestrians! side WALK, not bike lane! Bicyclists on trails need to understand that they are sharing the paths with peds. They need to have bells to ring or some kind of way to alert peds that they are behind them. Ped hikers need to have a step to the side rule for the trails, hopefully no one gets hit.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Also, I wasn't bent out of shape because I had to go slow. I was bent out of shape because there were dozens of cars behind me riding my ass, screaming and honking at me. With those curves, it's hard to see far enough in advance that everyone is at a standstill. It could have cause an accident. It's the same reason you don't go 30mph on a 60mph highway. It's dangerous. And those bikers could have EASILY ridden to the side a TINY bit.

Becca Doyle
Becca Doyle

Personally, I think cyclists are assholes, so I'm biased. HOWEVER, I know a lot of motorists are assholes as well. In a collision between a car and a bike, the bike doesn't stand a chance. It's just not safe for them to be in the road, whether or not the cyclist or motorist is behaving badly.

Emilio Sanchez
Emilio Sanchez

I ride my bike year long and don't own a car , has saved me thousands in cost. Yes we shouldn't ride down feds, Sheridan, some parts of Colfax and other busy roads but we have just as much of a right to be on the road as you .

Cyclist should give cars the rite of way, for every ones safety. Courtistsy benefits everyone. I

Bryan Moberg

something that has a top speed less than half the speed limit should stay the hell off the road, it may be the law, but its a stupid ass law that should be repealed.

Commuteonyourbike
Commuteonyourbike

It is not about the effort taken, It is about the time.  The roads are there to allow people and goods to move from one place to another in a an economically viable amount of time.  Your sport is not more important than my ability to get where I need to in a timely manner.  When you do 20 Mph in a 55 zone and do not let people pass you waste hours of people's time. If you hold up 30 cars (I have seen longer lines) for 10 minutes you have just wasted (assuming a few carpools) 8 hours of peoples time.  Cycling is the only sport where the taxpayers are expected to fund the required facilities.
