Reader: Douchy Colorado cyclists take selfishness to new heights

washington.park.bicycles.jpg
Our post about the ten most expensive places to get a speeding ticket has spurred plenty of memorable comments, including one claiming that Colorado motorists drive too slowly and another maintaining that drivers are selfish -- an assertion many interpreted as an attack from cycling advocates. This reader isn't buying it.

Martin Koenigsberg writes:

I guess Michelle Schwinghammer can expect to see her lovely mug online in full squat. Lol lovely road indeed minus the rude pissers!! I run it often and do not pee in front of others homes. If I ever find out where one of you pissers live expect to see me in your front yard ha my guess is if you looked out into your front yard and saw that you to would be mad too.

I'd rather piss you off than get run down by one of the other assholes in a car not paying attention while texting. Also reading comprehension i said "slow and courtious" not fast and no fucks. Your just looking for a fight.

If you ride straight at me, my wife, my kids or my colleagues, at speed and with no intent of either moving out of the way or getting off the sidewalk, expect to get slammed into the nearest immovable object to protect them first. Stay the fuck off the sidewalk, asshole. It's illegal to ride there, period, and your attempted assault with a moving vehicle (and yes, DPD WILL write you that ticket if it's proved your riding behavior was 'aggravated' or presented a clear danger to someone vulnerable on the sidewalk) will only be part of your problem.

^ this comment, from a guy who's already imagined the flowers that will be at my funeral and ventilator hookups? you, sir, might could use some fresh air.

If "that road is for cyclists", then let's transfer the entire cost of maintenance, repaving, monitoring and the like 100% to cyclists. When you impede traffic, ride out of your lane, cut off cars by making illegal turns and the rest of it, you're just a semi-soft speed bump.

^^^ Did you think that up all by yourself, or did you get a 13-year old to help you?

I ride super close to the closest cycle in my lane of traffic. If they want to hit my vehicle/window with their fists, I'll let physics take over.

^^^ "What's the responsibility of drivers...that cyclists do not take?" 1/ Rolling through or riding, at speed, through red lights and stop signs 2/ Not to ride on a pedestrian right of way e.g. the sidewalks 3/ Riding in between vehicles on a roadway, both driving-parked and driving-driving lanes 4/ Not licensing or insuring a vehicle utilizing the roadways 5/ Yielding to vehicles when your vehicle (the bicycle) is at a point to yield 6/ Not making illegal left or right turns 7/ Not riding the wrong way on a one-way street 8/ Not utilizing proper signals/indicators when making turns or stops 9/ Riding at night with no front OR back lights to illuminate your vehicle 10/ Riding multiple-vehicles abreast in a single vehicle lane 11/ Not impeding the flow of traffic (yes, this is a law for motor vehicles too) 12/ Ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy and meets minimum safety requirements Is THAT enough of a list of specific responsibilities that the majority if cyclists blatantly flaunt, or are YOU just a troll, Andrew Hopf?

I have found, in times past that, while 12 points of exclamation are, truly, FAR too many, and, in all actuality, 8 or 9 far too few, the median of 10 really seemed to hit home, both visually and punctuationally. Glad to have a fan in you, Michelle!!! :D

the psychology behind the chronically road raged is a funny thing to examine. not only are there are far more important things to be upset about, but too many opportunities for your ire to be stirred up. forgive me for saying so, but antibike loons are a predictably bitchy lot and it has less to do with their passion for following the rules of the road or concern for safety than it does with being habitually frustrated with life in general and looking for any reason to vent it.

Andrew Hopf

Britt, please move, that road is for cyclists, and has been long before you were around. I moved to deer creek canyon specifically to ride my bicycle on it, and have hundreds of times.

Andrew Hopf

Gary and John are just afraid to admit that the reason they hate cyclists is men in tight pants make them uncomfortable with their own sexuality.

Let he who never bakes the rules throw the first stone.

Adam, please provide any proof that cyclists brake more laws than anyone.

Andrew Hopf

what "rights" do drivers and pedestrians have that cyclists want? be specific. what's the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians that cyclists do not take? Again, please be specific. Or are you just a troll?

Andrew Hopf

If you ride a bicycle you quickly realize. I don't think you deserve to die for braking the law in your car. I don't exactly follow the rules on my bicycle, and i bet Gary and Dave break more 'rules' in their cars (probably pickup trucks) than I ever have on a bicycle. Also I don't ride on the sidewalks, and no serious cyclist would, that's for kids and pedestrians.

Motorists have no problems sharing the road IF cyclists SHARE THE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you have to use a car to beat people up, John Elliot? We all know "Krav Maga" is tailored for idiots and is useless when the shit hits the fan. No surprise that vehicular assault is included in the "Krav Maga" bag of "tricks." That, and white phosphorus cluster bombs. You big brave man, you. Keep that shit up.

Craig Hammersmith
Craig Hammersmith

Two abreast? HAHAHAHA no. We ride five abreast. Whole lane. No worse than a farm implement. You *WILL* slow down and wait to pass until it's safe to do so. Now that you've been educated on this tenet of fundamental driving procedure, please feel free, and do not hesitate, to offer additional questions and/or comments. Pay little heed to my condescending mirth. The greatest minds are routinely mocked and denigrated. Go ahead and step on up to the plate, Mr. Einstein.

"...when they don't follow the laws then they are road kill!" So if I disobey traffic laws on my bike, it's a capital crime? Then I'm a dead man cycling. See ya out there, studmuffin. Don't forget your diapers. ;)

Rupert Bauer

I should add that everyone should take the time to read the bike laws. They are online and easy to find. Most bicyclists think they know it but aren't even close. They also forget "share the road" works both ways.

Rupert Bauer
Rupert Bauer

Most of the impatient bicyclists and or driver's aren't Coloradoans. Both need to show down and be more polite and respectful to others. If you want to move here, drive fast, run stop signs, not wait your turn, and in general be disrespectful. .. you are destroying what brought you here. Please feel free to move some place where people weren't raised on generations of ethics and respect.

I agree. They never obey any of the laws, they have their own lane and ride in the street! They drive me crazy!

I think we should license all bikes. Give them all plates. I for one have been hit by a bicycle more than once. When they dent your door, or scratch your paint or break off a mirror, we have no way of reporting the bike or getting repairs. Other vehicles need a recourse. Also, I feel it's only fair they contribute to the maintenance of the road that they hog and feel an entitlement to.

Thomas Charles Santistevan
Thomas Charles Santistevan

I read it, and you guys claim that we have to share the road, but you can't use the energy to start up again. I don't mind going slowly behind you until I can pass, but having to do that 3 or 4 times is awful.

John McInerney
John McInerney

I have had this problem as well. I also hate when you run into said tour-de-asshats with the only way of passing them with the required 3-5ft buffer is to cross the double yellow lines into the opposing lane. Then the cyclists start waving you by like I need their permission and they always start waving me by at a blind corner where I can't see if there's another car coming up.

Just shy of the amount of douchebags that defend cyclists with their retard logic.

It's interesting how many of these comments are generally condoning the casual murder of people on bikes. You people are fucked. I'm not a fan of most spandex-clad cyclists, but slow the fuck down, and realize what you're saying. It's not okay to kill people with your car, or any other weapon for that matter. I commute by bicycle every day, all year, and it's a damn good thing that I pretend that drivers are homicidal maniacs out to kill me... because you clearly are.

Tamara Munroe

They are douchey. They don't obey traffic laws, they love to several across, and on windy roads with blind spots when there's a bike path right next to it!!

Jayson Degroot

He's right. They don't obey what little laws they have. When they almost get hey while riding with the"I have the right-of-way" attitude then look a you with that dumb ass look.

Both motorists and cyclists have their share of inconsiderate people, the latter just seem to have a larger percentage. Just because you're on a bike doesn't give you the right to block off the roads at far less than the speed limit and disobey regulations. Let's just all take responsibility for making each other's lives easier.

Pellet rifle...or, you can make a pretty handy suppresser out of some PVC pipe, some cotton wadding and tire-rubber gaskets. Just sayin' that Google is a wonderful thing.
