Reader: Drivers shouldn't bitch about cyclists just because they're fat, lazy and want to text

JeffMorrisLoops.jpg
The comments are still pouring in on a Comment of the Day alleging that Colorado cyclists are douchy and selfish, with an increasing number defending those who prefer two wheels over four. Here's a particularly passionate example.

Justin Jordan writes:

Everyone complaining is fat and lazy. Rides bikes whenever you can. Just cause you wanna text while you drive and not worry about getting your ass sued because you weren't paying attention is no reason to hate bikers. Not all of them disrespect the traffic laws. I commend people that wanna ride bikes over driving cars. It bothers me that so many people are against it. Maybe we would have clear skies over denver instead of a huge brown cloud. #crymeariver.

Haven't seen a cyclist one stop at a red light for the entire duration of said red light…they go when its not busy and thats what pisses me off overall! they say they want to use the road and we should share it…then follow the fucking rules

when I was a kid we rode our bikes all over the place, we knew damn good and well if we were stupid we would get hit and probably killed, we respected cars and trucks because the law of physics dictates that they will win, if we were in traffic we got yelled at and confronted, we still managed to get around but we knew our place and it worked

Not my resources that's really how you're supposed to use commas. If you made it through English 121 you would know this.

So I have young kids. They are forced to ride in the street? THATS safe.

Nah, I will let your 3rd grade resources make you feel superior. I'm good. Thanks though!

As a pedestrian, I tend to view avid cyclists as impotent/infertile scrawny little twerps who are too fucking lazy to use their own two feet.

Don't worry.. the typical hipster cyclist isn't interested in your granola twat. It's not gluten free.

I do honestly believe that bicyclists have a holier than thou attitude

People on Bikes. You need to obey the speed limit sign. If you can't maintain that speed don't be in the middle of the highway. Bicycles should stay to curb or the sidewalks and not to cross over that white line onto a highway listed over 35mph. If you can't do at least 35mph in a 35mph zone you shouldn't be on the road. Just because you are on the bike you made your choice to stick to the gravel if that's all there is for you. I find it offensive that bikes aren't being cited for driving below the speed limit and endangering motorists. Your bicycles only have reflectors and no lights to warn people. It's very dangerous to be in a motor vehicle and then have to go from 50mph to 10mph just because some idiot on a bicycle thinks they have the entire road. If the speed limit is to fast for your bike stay out of the road. Especially at night.

The state law is broad to allow individual municipalities to determine if bicycles can or cannot ride on the sidewalk. Most municipalities in Colorado have a sidewalk bike ban in place - including Denver. (Denver Revised Municipal Code 54-576). I have corrected my original comment to state *in most* places in Colorado it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk.

A person riding a bicycle or electrical assisted bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. A person riding a bicycle in a crosswalk shall do so in a manner that is safe for pedestrians. A person shall not ride a bicycle or electrical assisted bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk where such use of bicycles or electrical assisted bicycles is prohibited by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. A person riding a bicycle or electrical assisted bicycle shall dismount before entering any crosswalk where required by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. A person riding or walking a bicycle or electrical assisted bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances, including, but not limited to, the rights and duties granted and required by section 42-4-802. For everyone saying that riding on a sidewalk is illegal......just wondering where you got that? Looks here like Colorado has specific rules for bicycles to be ridden on the sidewalk.

Deleted by Laws 2005, Ch. 301, § 1, eff. July 1, 2005. So please tell me why colorado statute gives the rules for when a bike is ridden on a sidewalk if riding on a sidewalk is illegal?

I have 2 vehicles and have to pay for them to be on the road in a lane of traffic. Tell me; how much was your bike registration to ride on the road in a lane of traffic? If you can pay for 1 car and use your bike on the road, why do I have to pay for 2 cars to be used for the same purpose as your bike?

Justin Jordan
Justin Jordan

I understand and don't like that some people riding there bikes disrespect the laws. My issues were with all the people completely against bikes on the road. It makes zero sense and I can't believe the things people were saying. I ride as much as I can in bike lanes and try to be aware of where cars are mainly because I don't want to die or deal with any sort of accident. We need to be more respectful of each other not the opposite. My fat and lazy comments were definitely not nice but I'm trying to stick up for the professional bicyclist. :)

Joey Depue
Joey Depue

That's fantastic. I was just trying to explain the argument because it seems like you missed the point. I'm not against people who want to ride. I am against the dumb asses that weave through 6 or 7 cars stopped at a stoplight, then swerve into the crosswalk to use the pedestrian signal so they don't have to wait at the red light then swerve back into the road. Then they cry if someone blocks them or doesn't show them "respect."

Fine, then lets register my bike. I'm sure it won't cut down on the amount of crybabies.. It was just a response to some of the bullshit. I have no problems with that at all. Also I don't have any DUI's I ride my bike because it's genuinely faster living downtown.

Cyclists need to share the fucking road. Some asshole cyclist ran right into the back of my boyfriends car the other day. How do you even do that? Dumbasses

Joey Depue
Joey Depue

No. People who put commas where there shouldn't be one are the ones who are stupid. Hahaha!!!

Joey Depue
Joey Depue

It's not that you dont pay for your CAR to be on the road it's that you DONT pay for your bike to be on the road. I have 2 vehicles that are used on the road. Do I only have to register one of them? Nope. Everything on the road needs to be registered. THATS the point that is trying to be made I believe.

PS - Don't believe me? Put your keys away for a week, grab your bike or walking shoes...try it. I'm not making this shit up, but the rest of you have quite a variety of excuses ;-)

Drivers in Denver can be pricks, aggressive toward cyclist and pedestrians because they automatically assume they own the road and we're not supposed to be there. I've been walking with my 2 kids and had cars fly around us while walking accost the cross walk...and we had the light. I'm walking with toddlers, following the lights, keeping my eyes out...people are still dicks. And if it's not you, don't make excuses for the assholes the rest of us actually do have to deal with. It's a very real problem, and people have died in this city because of it.

Drivelist

Westword, please stop stoking this.  I drive and cycle.  When driving, I love cyclists; who hand signal; take side streets; wear helmets; have lights when it's dark; and ride to the right side of the lane.  When cycling, I love drivers; who always use their turn signals, even when they think no one is around; who take wide berth; who are aware of their trailer length, and; who don't text or talk on the phone.

When cycling, I probably do things to piss you off.  Like running lights or stop signs(when no one in the cross street is coming) or moving to the head of traffic and going through the red light.  Why?  Because I want to get out of your way as fast as possible and get to a side street.  You think riding in traffic is fun?  When driving, yes, I get pissed at cyclists who don't take a side street simply because there is a "sharrow" on the busy street they're riding.  Just because it's there, doesn't mean it makes sense to do it (yes, I'm talking to you on E 23rd..there are bike lanes on E 22nd).

Please, let's all try to do the right and safe thing.  Anger or annoyance has a tendency to turn to profound sadness while you speak softly to the father-mother-child you're trying to comfort after you've run over them before the ambulance gets there.  And depositions or the witness stand has never been described as "fun."  Please take a breath and think of positive reasons some cyclist or driver may have for doing what you think is idiotic or selfish.

I think it's the cyclists that need to share the road, and if it says go single file you should. Don't take the entire road for you and your 15 spandex buddies.

Dear entitled, self righteous, judgemental cyclists, bitch, cry and moan all you like, the fact remains that if you break the law and fail to get out of the way my car breaks you. Go on, insult, judge and demean, maybe I dont hit the brakes next time and there will be one less rolling speed bump.

I'm so sick of this back and forth. Also, Denver Westword please don't use Loops: Denver's images on these posts. Cyclist's get a bad enough rap in this city. Loops doesn't want to be involved in your back and forth between cars and cyclists. We believe that we all need to Share the road and be responsible for our own actions.

Cyclists need breaks from motorists. The same a person gets a tax break for owning an electric vehicle, Tesla etc... A cyclist should be able to run red lights and always have the right of way. This works, I've been doing it for over twenty years. It is a lot harder for a cyclist to stop and go than to step on an accelerator and puff that V8 into the atmosphere. (plus we do it anyway). We actually need our own lane, the same width as an automobile lane. There are so many points of view from only the motorist. I drive and ride. It would be nice to get waves from motorists rather than the finger.

Everyone should try riding bikes on the street just to see how insanely greedy most motorists are. It would be an eye opening experience for sure!

I will ride on the streets until I die. As nice as the motorist is towards me out there, that is the same respect I will show them. Seems pretty fair.

So 35 mph is a minimum limit?  Oh I see.  Thanks for clearing that up for all of us slow cyclist.  So as long as we can go over 35 then you will stop being a douche?

What are you doing going 50 in a 35?  So rules of the road apply to cyclist who you don't approve of, but not to douche bags in speeding cars?

How much does your car weigh vs. a bike?  What type of road damage does your car do?  How much emissions are you responsible for for driving your 2 cars?
