Gloria Neal's firing marks impending death of progressive AM-760

At this writing, AM-760, Clear Channel Denver's progressive station, continues to exist -- but that's only because no one's bothered to pull its plug yet. The outlet, which has struggled to make an impact on the radio market for the better part of a decade, is on the way out, and morning-show staple Gloria Neal is the latest victim of the famed Best of Denver curse: We named her the city's top radio host in our 2014 edition, mere weeks before she and others at the outlet were shown the door.

Neal divulged the news on her Facebook page on May 7. "Clear Channel is completely changing the format," she wrote, adding, "The official announcement has not been made as to what the format will be, but none of the current hosts will be on the new station."

The specifics about what's coming next are still pending. Via e-mail, Greg Foster, who oversees programming for AM-760 and sister station KHOW, confirms the news even as he refers to the outlet by its call letters, KKZN, rather than the AM-760 brand. "Gloria Neal's show is no longer on KKZN and she is no longer with our company," he notes. "We will be announcing new programming for KKZN in the near future."

This death sentence shouldn't come as a surprise, given that AM-760 has struggled to turn liberal punditry into revenue for its entire existence.

Al Franken circa 2008.
In the beginning, many observers felt Clear Channel had decided to create a forum for liberal voices to counter the popular perception that the firm had a conservative bias. After all, founder/chairman Lowry Mays was a personal friend of both former presidents named Bush. But ex-Denver-based programmer Kris Olinger denied this strategy in a Westword interview.

"Our motives here had to do with us having three AMs -- and finding a format that works on the third AM can be somewhat challenging," she said, referring in passing to Clear Channel outlets KOA and KHOW. "You've got sports, you've got business, but we felt, after researching the market, that progressive talk would be a strong choice, especially when you look at the makeup of the population in Colorado politically. It's a third Democrat and a third Republican and a third independent. So it made sense to give people who are progressive, liberal, what have you, a radio product that reflected their values."

The station began as the local outlet for Air America, a nationally syndicated concept meant to undermine the conservative stranglehold on talk radio. Among its stars was former Saturday Night Live comic Al Franken, who belittled predictions of Air America's demise in a 2006 chat with Westword. "Bill O'Reilly goes on his show and says we'll be off the air in a couple of months -- and he started saying that when we had four stations," he told us at the time. "And then he said it when we had eight, and twelve, and twenty and thirty. He says it all the time, but we're still here."

By the following year, however, Air America was on life support, and in 2010, the last rites were finally read.

The conservatives that own big media don't want to be exposed, so shut up the truth and turn on the propaganda.  Limpballs is there for you!

Pump & Dump Believe it or not, a financial term used to describe penny stock boiler room operations, If last person leaving KKZN AM 760 listening post hasn't turned off the lights, beginning with Bloomberg Financial news last night, and shaving an hr off of today's Thom Hartmann afternoon show, the fix is in- the new format is Talking Money ( from the previous, "Money Talks! !)  Finance for arm chair broke millionaires I give it 3 months

IMO, station was run best with Ms.Kris Ollinger at the wheel. Despite the naysayers who mouth free market platitudes, ( Politico article documents the right wing massive subsidies that fuel the sound machine) liberal talk radio can & does thrive in other markets if tended like a carefully grown garden with a mix of local advertisers, Concerning KKZN, will Dr. Daddy O will keep a weekend slot?Lastly, if I understand the ratings numbers, approx 20,000 listeners tuned in per day. Of those reading this, join me in sending a simple, separate (labeled FCC) complaint letter of not meeting the community needs to the station, for their FCC folder , which will considered when they , the Clear Channel station ask for renewal of license

With the elections in November and the push to frack the hell out of Colorado, I figure Clear Channel wanted to eliminate any voices against a fascist sweep. Now, we'll probably get Christian Fascist Chat. It's odd, though, because hard-line fascist bloviators, like Limbaugh, are losing audience by the millions. In places like LA, his show is now 37th in the market. Not sure what it's doing here.

Though a liberal, I'll tell you why I stopped listening. The chat was so dour, I couldn't take it at times, especially as the country suffered under Bush's neo-fascist  wars, economics, and the destruction of social programs. Under conservative president Obama's tenure as president, the same drumbeat by talkers, solely focused on politics and rarely on life in general, finally did me in. I turned it off for good.

I'd give a lot for a return to talk that focused on more than just the narrow world of politics. What happened to movie shows? Restaurant shows? Talk about culture and what's going on around the region? We have Westword for its calendar, but no real place to discuss any of it other than through social media. That doesn't seem to be enough.

I'll tell Clear Channel this straight up. AM radio is dead, even with HD stereo. The sound quality is still not good enough for music. Talk is mind-numbing when so narrowly focused, and your loss of ratings share nationwide is proof of that. You can't compete with streaming audio services. So, what really can you do on AM to better generate revenue than this liberal talk format? I'm really curious, because nothing else seems to be working anywhere in the country.

Anyway. That's my $.02.

I used to be a liberal, they talk a good game, and then do the opposite of what they say. Now I am an Independent and have learned most of them on both sides are full of shyte. You keep rooting for your team Steve.

Liberals like to be agreed with, not have discussions. It isn't some conspiracy to keep the format from you, it is simply poor ratings that close these stations down. This has been proven across the country where most cities have multiple conservative talk radio stations and 1 or less progressive ones.

AM and FM radio suck. Nothing but righties on AM and over-compressed, over-played "music" on FM. Thank the Lloyd for satellite radio.

Of course, Rusbo's ratings are flushing down the terlette. Clear Channel is stuck with his contract, or he'd be gone, too.

It is this exact mentality that will forever stop any clear discussion - and ability to work together for change. Very sad.

Buh-bye, AM-760.  That's OK.  The hard left still owns the HR departments at NBC, CBS, CNN, PMSNBC, and ABC.  They're also very entrenched in the Denver TV market.  They still own DenPo and Westword.  If the loss of AM-760 is just too much to bear,  they can can stream that anti-capitalist, anti-corporate crap from their iPhone Radio Network over their Prius' Bluetooth connection.

Disclosure: The carbon footprint break-even on a Prius after considering manufacturing pollution is 85,000 miles.

Disclosure:  iPhones are made in sweatshops in China owned by big exploitative corporations like FoxCon who respond to employee suicides by putting up jumper nets.  Albert (Livin' Large) Gore, it's most famous board member, has the carbon footprint of the POTUS with Larry Ellison thrown in for good measure.

Ha....Lady says, 'while staying away from conspiracy theories'. People on the radio are paid NOT to talk about 'conspiracy theories', or just what some call the secret government. Hey guess what liberals and neocons, the Federal Reserve is a private corporation, the US debt can NEVER be paid back, cause the original loan from 1913 could not be paid back. The UN creates war, poverty, and famine. Every president is related to eachother, all of them. The US is an olgiarchy and democracy is illusory. Prove me wrong.

HUGE mistake on Clear Channel's part, and an enormous loss for those of us who loved her. Gloria Neal was the only morning show host worth listening to in Denver. She initiated thoughtful and informative discussions on a variety of current events while staying away from conspiracy theories. She also never tried to dictate what one should think, she instead shared her own thoughts while also having an open ear to listen to other points of view. BEST thing about her show is that she would leave you wearing a smile and feeling hopeful about resolution. Instead of leaving you angry and pissed off at the world like so many other shows typically do. Glo is irreplaceable. She was a 'light' in the dark world of talk radio, and I won't be listening to anyone else. I simply won't be listening at all.

Probably a done deal, flipping the station, will be missed by many, some of us can’t afford to subscribe to Satellite XM. It makes me wonder how well managed a station could be when Clear channel/ KKZN would air National Geographic on Sundays as “filler” ..without the pictures, come now.. We live in a world where less than half the pop. know which party controls the House Of Representatives.
time to vote  & vote hard . Too much is on the line to sit this next one out.

Well gosh darn sugar, your $.02 was wasted as soon as you declared the incompetent one (Obama) conservative.

How far out in left field does one need be to think Obama is anything other than the worst and most liberal president in our history?

Limbaugh's numbers are down. His show is so costly because of past ratings that his syndicator, Premier, doesn't make any money on it. But, you don't hear about his program being shut down. Hmm. Wonder why not?

Clear channel is a business and is beholden to stock holders.  If their current lineup was bringing in revenue that lineup would still be on the air.  It's basic economics, nothing more.

@fishingblues @sugarbbbear Worst president WTF are you smoking?  President Obama has done a fine job considering the historic record level of Republican obstructionism, and the DISASTEROUS mess he has had to clean up after your last Republican president.

@fishingblues @sugarbbbear  I guess as far to the left as one would have to be to the fascist right to believe Obama isn't conservative. If he were liberal or socialist, healthcare would have been Medicare for all. The jobs program would have been Keynesian and plentiful. Surveillance of Americans would not be the NSA testing up and using the 4th Amendment for toilet paper.

Sugar, baby, you do realize you live in the United States of America?  In case you missed it when you were thrown out of grade school, the USA is a federal constitutional republic based on Democracy with an economy based on capitalism.  We are not (nor will we ever be) in a Communist/socialist regime).

Damn, no wonder we get incompetent boobs in the White House, if we have people like you voting.
