The comments continue to pour in regarding Patricia Calhoun's post about the Ballpark Neighborhood Association's opposition to a new day center for the homeless. This reader sees those who object to the project as a problem rather than the solution.

retank writes:

All you hipster yuppies have killed Denver. LoDo used to be real. Now you all turned it into one big prefab city with no real character, just like you did to all the rest of the mountain towns. You think you're making Colorado livelier, but you really have made Colorado die.

retank- Right on Sister. Thankfully there are still places in the state that if they found you wore a cowboy hat as an ironic statement would beat you with a 2x4. Unfortunately, not anywhere near Denver.

I remember the days; a gun rack in my Subaru, a pistol in the glove box- not because you needed it, but because, why not?

Does sound like a waste of energy. You really that worried about what other people are doing? how the dress? how they act? Maybe you should kill yourself. You sound pretty worthless yourself. I really think some of you need your ass kicked royally. Maybe even by a hipster. If you sit on the internet and talk shit about people your more than likely a loser yourself so get your own life and quit worrying about what the next man is doing, when in no way it actually affects your life,And if you say they do affect your life then your probably a no skill having fool. Did a hipster steal your girlfriend?

Hipsters are the f-tards of society. They bring with them zero original thoughts and ideas. They are consumers who contribute little in the way of intellectual thought. They are driven by the garish need to one up one another and think every discovery they make is some sort of profound moment that must be documented by shameless "selfies".

The amusing thing is they do not even know how ridiculous they really are. They are completely devoid of self-awareness. All that matters is the "cool" of the moment. They stare aimlessly into their iPhones, iPads, i-Anythings. They speak in 140 or less character soundbites.

I have got a little bit of news for you hipsters yuppies. You are not cool, your discoveries are not cool - COOL was here before you and it will be here long after your pathetic souls have left this Earth.

Stay way out in the suburbs (or better et, leave Colorado as we do not want or need you).

What we really need to make Denver great is more homeless junkies wandering around, shitting on sidewalks, robbing tourists and leaving our city a filthy, disgusting mess.

Those darn yuppies with their jobs, always trying to make stuff nice and clean.

Please...let's stop with the whitewashed bullshit of "undocumented"...they knowingly committed an illegal act, period. THEY. ARE. ILLEGAL. BY. DEFINITION. I will reiterate... There is no such thing as an "undocumented immigrant" Said individuals knowingly, willingly and with purpose broke the sovereign Federal law of the United States of America when they CHOSE to cross into the United States illegally, CHOSE to reside in the United States illegally, and CHOSE to continue to stay even with full knowledge that they broke the laws of the United States. It doesn't matter WHERE illegal aliens come from. If they've CHOSEN to break the law in order to come here and be here, then they are by definition EMIGRATING ILLEGALLY to the sovereign United States. Documented immigrants follow the rules, laws, processes and yes, fees, associated with emigrating to this country. Not doing so betrays either a blatant disregard for US law or a blatant disregard for doing things properly to be here. Either way, we do NOT need people in this country so willing to conduct criminal acts (and yes, emigrating here illegally IS a criminal act, whether you like it or not), no matter their country of origin.

Yup...it's TERRIBLE when people obtain a high-quality education, work hard and get promoted (with the associated rise in salaries and bonuses) and then spend that money in an economy where the taxes on that expenditure prop up social programs, schools, roads, etc. That just sucks...

John Elliott

That is absolutely inaccurate. Immigration laws were initiated after the founding of the United States of America and its government. THAT law is the law of this land now - not a damned thing that happened prior to the laws being put on the books is relevant. It is ILLEGAL, under current Federal Law of the United States of America, to enter and reside in the United States of America without having gone through the proper processes, fees, etc set up by the United States of America. Considering that illegal immigrants (let's just stop with this bullshit "undocumented worker" whitewashing of the problem, shall we?) have knowingly, willingly and with forethought BROKEN THE LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and now reside ILLEGALLY within the sovereign borders of the United States of America. Know why I keep saying United States of America? Because that is currently the land, the law and the government overseeing the lower 48 states + Alaska and Hawaii, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of those states fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Law.

Everything changes for better or worse. I was a teen in Denver in the 60s and, frankly, I can't believe how conservative a lot of us got. But that's how it goes. Someday yuppie hipsters will be overrun by another generation. Stay true to yourself and don't worry about the externals.

Move to Nucla or Norwood or Wray. Real get "REAL" really fast and slow.

Colorado survived the '70s, and they had John Denver. They survived Kerouac's obnoxiously self-indulgent crowd in the late '40s and early '50s, hip too shall pass.

Totally true. Every place I see in cap hill and lodo These days is a whiskey bar or some faggy warehouse that only sells Moscow mules and pbr.

"Yuppie motherfuckers? You mean successful people?" Yes, because "success" means overprivileged legacy brats sponging off their elders and flaunting their otherwise undeserved riches in the face of folks who actually have to earn a living. Go fuck yourself, KAAAAAAHNN!!!!

Luis Posada

Lodo was pure industry before the ballpark moved in so I don't know what this idiot is talking about. Certainly gentrification might dilute some of the character but we are talking about replacing empty lots with businesses and housing. A homeless center will lower property values and that is a real concern for people.

Unless you are a Native American from here STFU. Being a native just means your parents had a baby here. Nothing you did made that happen. It just means two people had sex

Bet all these complaining assholes have a closet full of Toms and thus consider themselves philanthropists.

You move to a $500 per sq. foot McLoft in an urban area, you'd think someone would realize how important you are and get rid of the undesirables.... but hell yeah, you'll pay $35 lb for fair trade coffee...... fucking crazies

Lets not get distracted from a poor choice of words.... and how this validates his/her point even further. Clearly there are people who moved to Denver seeking opportunity.... These people need to ask themselves why did they move here instead of staying in their own presumably prefect little cities/towns in the mid-west or where ever to 'clean' our city up? Go back home if it was so great otherwise respect those who dwell in their homes whether or not you like them

Lets not get distracted by the misuse of the term of hipsters.... all these 'young professionals' from out of state need to ask themselves... why, if their city/town, was so great did they move to Colorado and complain in an effort to 'clean' our city up? Go back to the mid-west. Seriously.

Colorado IS a great place to live IF you can afford it. I'm a native and I'm facing the very real possibility of looking outside of the state for affordable housing and cost of living. I've lived along the front range all of my life. I'll truly be lost without the mountains! Seriously- I can sense them on a pitch black cloudy night. I ALWAYS know which direction West is. :/

I'm a native. I have to say of all the bullshit being spewed here, your comment is the only one I feel it necessary to respond to, and my response is to tell you to suck a chode. Maybe the only people YOU knew from the Denver area were trailer trash because you yourself are trailer trash.

weed legalization was good im sure everyone knows/remembers from election time the reasons why it should be legal, anyway people complain too much about things they want their perfect little idea of their perfect little world wrapped up in a perfect little bow never to change, but changes happen continuously and constantly, its growth, denver is apart of globalization and no city stays the same, they evolve and change over time especially more open cities like denver. I for one like growth I like the evolution process, the influx of people, it means more business, more money, more liveliness, more everything. Without the steady growth since mayor pena we'd still be that dusty cow town of the early 80's, that i know some people like. The reason denvers anything more than just an airport stop off is because of investments made in growing denver, attracting people to come here. The rockies, elitches (even though its hokey; in our downtown for crying out loud) are all thanks to this effort, the backlash by natives has continued on ever since #nativestickers

I thought a hipster is the opposite of a yuppie?  I bet this lady has a native sticker on her subaru.  Anyway, Lodo is full of tourists from the suburbs.  Every but in Denver knows that Lodo sucks.

I thought pueblo was lol. But seriously Denver does a lot to cultivate art, music and other good influences. They care about maintaining parks and open areas and open areas and is interested in providing many different types of education to the masses. This isn't the old west anymore. Colorado is now known for being open minded and united and Denver does a great job depicting that. The music scene art scene and small business scene are unique in this state and especially Denver

Roni Torres
Roni Torres

Agreed! All in all Denver is a great place to live! If someone hates it it's probably more of an internal issue.

Roni Torres

I thought Lodo was more suburbanites than people who actually live in Denver county. Most "hipsters" don't really hang out in Lodo... All in all though these comments a just simple fallacy with no real fact or back up. Economy changes culture change people change new methods of money need to be found somewhere. Everyone just likes to play the blame game especially when holding onto "what used to be"

I'm really confused by this debate, seems folks have got off track.  The issue as I see it is if funds should be used to just give homeless people a place to hangout (presumeably lessening their appearance on the streets) or to actually help them not be homeless anymore.  Its strictly about best use of funds, not a Texans/Cali/Hipsters/etc.. are ruining Colorado.

I think everyone agrees, that homeless folks can be a problem.  No one likes to see it, higher crime can result (hell I'd be stealing shit or doing whatever I had to do to feed/clothe/house myself if I had exhausted other options).  But the issue here isn't truly hard on your luck people.  One can claim unemployment for at least 6 months.  Our economy is pretty decent again, there are all kinds of hiring signs up.  Statistically a lion's share of the homeless are mentally ill/disabled and/or folks struggling with major addiction issues.  And no amount of job training, or assistance can fix those things.  The best we can do for that population is give them a place to hang out, that's out of the way for the rest of us.  A hardcore heroin user is a lost cause, they've prioritized drugs above food and shelter.  Pan handlers can make $80-$120/day tax free, 7 days a week.  There's many folks who don't bring home that much at all, employed.  If you can't remain indoors and fed for $80/day you're pissing it all away on drugs or you can't pan handle effectively (mentally ill/disabled) either way job training and other measures aren't going to fix that problem.

It's a helpless feeling conceding that you can't help them improve their own situation.  But the best thing for everyone is to give them food and shelter to minimize criminal outbursts.  You can pay in a smashed car window and a missing stereo that costs you $100's and netted them $10, or you can spend the $10 and give them some food and place to chill. Your call.

john your long winded self important diatribe got played out in your whining on the other blog. Nobody is impressed by you, your shitty little bar, or your lame tech consulting. As if there arent any other tech consultants in the world. We have so far seen you threaten people, challenge them to fights, belittle women, respond to people under different names/accounts, and in general act like the very type of douchebag that this blog is very much about. Its not about hipsters, that is the wrong term, its about people like you. So you just keep masturbating your ridiculousness all over the web, we'll just sit here and laugh at you. You clearly dont have many clients judging by the amount of time you have spent on here, being a douchebag. Maybe someday your tenure at Scruffy Murphy's or at Kraftewerks will fall apart, and your little douchebag world will have to live in an area surrounded by all of these people that you love to hate. Meanwhile, your still a balding jackass.
