Reader: Police brutality rallies are a f*cking joke

Patrick Jay, Denver Anonymous
Isa Jones's post about a Twitter exchange between Anonymous and the Denver Police Department after a police-brutality rally at which demonstrators say cops pushed elderly women and children prompted some fiery exchanges -- none more so than the following take, in which a reader has harsh words for protesters.

Prole writes:

What a fucking joke. Carrying black flags and masking up but cowering and screaming when they actually get charged by the pigs? Any self-respecting social antagonist wouldn't go to any of these marches. More free practice for the Denver Police Department, once a month. Keep draining the coffers of anyone dumb enough to be donating to your useless bail fund. Fuck occupy, fuck "anonymous" and fuck delusions of social change. EVERYTHING MUST GO. When liberal, bullshit reformism isn't the flavor of the day, maybe you'll be able to attract someone that can ACTUALLY STOP an arrest from happening at a demonstration.

God, just fucking kill yourselves.

How come cops never hassle me how come I never have a run in with a cop I don't understand where all this police brutality bullshit is

They are a joke. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, police and military forces roll around, kill you and your friend if you look at them funny, and get on with their lives. Police brutality is real, but all I see it a bunch of people with time to waste getting uppity instead of doing anything about it. Yet another group of angry white kids with nothing else to do.

Ugh, big surprise. The Facebook commentariat for the Westword is full of tender individuals "on the spectrum" and I'll have to elaborate.

There is a terrible police brutality problem in Denver. Anyone who denies that is a jackass. Internal affairs and independent monitors won't do anything to change that. I hate the fucking cops.I believe militant street protest is a great way to confront this issue. These are not militant street protests. They get to pretend to be, once a month everyone plays dress up to go to the dance, but they aren't. "Sticking feathers up your ass does not make you a chicken."

Police abuse people. That's what they do. Complaining about it or even pointing it out (especially in this context: what the fuck did you think they were going to do?) is completely fucking redundant and helps nothing. Getting five people arrested once a month at marches that accomplish nothing, don't engage physically whatsoever (most of the time. I'll even give you a "most of the time") and act really as crowd control training exercises for the department is totally pointless.

What's your goal? Speaking truth to power? Dumb, they aren't listening. Being a visible sign of resistance to the public? Dumber than fuck, because they don't give a shit and never will until serious lines get drawn and they have to pick a side. So I'm of the belief that these marches are comprised of people that need attention and some semblance of drama more meaningful than arguing about identity politics on Facebook. So once a month, the Denver activist community gets to have a twitter panic attack about "unjust arrests" (is there another kind...?) and needing bail because the cops arrested people who were ostensibly there to fight them. How high is everyone?

People need to FIGHT police brutality. Like, uh, literally fight it. All this "the government needs to be afraid of its people blah blah blah" rhetoric are empty threats. I got it on film! I got it on film! The whole world is watching! No, they aren't. Nobody cares and you'll probably lose in court you dumb liberal. Stop playing by their rules (they don't), using their language, and start playing by your own.

Protesting is fucking stupid, especially when every police department in the world is training to confront it as a military engagement. Quit telling them where you're going to be every month and figure out a plan that actually does some damage. Who wants to go to a protest where you're immediately surrounded by the most heavily armed police in the city? That's no way to build an empowered, daring movement that can accomplish anything.

But I'm just pissing in the trenches, right? Don't mind me.

Protest is as symbolic as it is (ideally) game - changing. It is our first amendment right. It is a muscle intrinsic to our ability to affect change in our enviromments, and like any other muscle it withers away without use. Bless these people for doing *something* and not trolling around Westword comments looking to pull others' efforts down to your shitty level of inactivity and complacency.

Perhaps it's not a problem in all of your communities, perhaps it's not a problem in all of the members of Anonymous' communities, however police brutality continues to be a problem in economically disenfranchised and minority communities and this group is trying to bring local attention to that. I'd be willing to bet that most of you criticizing this group are middle class white men who have never experienced aggressive force by police, and by your "wah wah butt hurt" mockery you display how little critical thought your're willing to put into causes outside of your you-centric worlds. Which is why the problems that this group are protesting keep happening again and again. And will happen forever more.

I don't think they are a joke when done seriously like how MLK and his gathering marched. That being said Anonymous is a joke and usually the members get exactly what they are asking for. They have a lot to learn if they are going to be taken seriously.

It is a waste of time. I know it begs the question of "who watches the watchers?" But what exactly has been accomplished by these protests? Will police brutality decrease? Somehow I have my doubts. There has been no tighter regulation inspired by these events, even the beating of that guy downtown, as publicized as it was, made no difference. So, a different avenue of approach is necessary here.

"Wahhhhh wahhh my butt hurts, not all police officers are bad! So you're stupid for striving to fix the broken pigs because that's offensive to the GOOD pigs. Wahhh my butt hurts wahhhhhh"

Why does westword give these people publicity? Angry trolls don't deserve articles written about them.

Anyone who ends their post with "kill yourself" doesn't make any points with me no matter what they are taking about.

Kristofer Wulf

They are not spontaneous marches. The movement is called Every5th and it does not focus on police brutality per se, just since the police violence at the Albuquerque anti-social violence protests.

Kristofer Wulf
Kristofer Wulf

" The rallies are a waste of time and being engineered by big money from behind the scenes. These aren't spontaneous. 90% of the marchers are being used and 10% are using them to advance their own ideological and political goals." Rob Jennings where do you think this money is coming from? And what exactly is that money being used for? Photocopying flyers?

Brian Martinez

Way to many bad cops around for the good cops not to notice. If a good cop looks the other way, he is not a good cop. Until they start turning the bad cops in.....fuck'em.

Yes, Westword, of course we all agree with the self-serving motto "fuck delusions of social change." Things never change, people never make a difference, social struggles never work, and people should always obey those in charge regardless of what they dictate or how they came to power. When I see people protesting the police or some corporation that fucked them over, I think "God, I hate those people." Not because they're bad people by nature, but because they make me feel bad about myself, because I don't give a fuck about anyone. That guilt is assuaged, however, by knowing that I'm a model citizen. When the police gun down my neighbor while he is sleeping, I say God bless America. When the police beat up my cousin because he is gay or sexually assault my niece because they can, I say I love this country. When the police harass and falsely arrest blacks and Latinos in Denver, I say better them than me, and Jesus Christ I love America. When they criminalize the homeless, I say fuck em, they must have deserved it... and the Denver Post agrees with me. No one should demand change. No one should make noise. No one should take to the streets. No one should reject was is given to them, be it three hots and a cot, or a raise at work for fucking over poor people. Now sing it with me, "I pledge allegiance to the flag..."

When "good cops" actively start taking down "bad cops" I'll believe "good cops" actually exist. Until then they are all nothing more than legalized thugs.

Rob Jennings, fascism and socialism are dialectically opposed ideas. It's hard to take you seriously when you don't know the difference. If you don't want to pay taxes then don't. Just make sure you don't use any tax funded organizations or programs (like roads, students loans/grants, public schools, etc). Do us all a favor and don't vote. Thomas Martinez, well said. People are too quick to be unreasonable by judging an entire group by a few or one negative interaction. It's how racism and prejudice occur.

Rob Jennings

Taxation is state administered force. Why aren't these people speaking out against it?

Thomas Martinez

I agree, I don't support police brutality in any way but not every single cop deserves to be put in that category of a piece of shit their like pit bulls they can be cool if trained right and are only looking for the respect that everyone deserves

So whos supposed to "police the police"? They're public servants and the amount of Police brutality and misconduct is ridiculous, especially in Denver and surrounding counties. Ignorance isnt bliss, its ignorance and this is a realistic problem. Its not an opinion, its a reality.

Bo BasedDisciple Alexander

Pretty accurate imo. Not that I normally defend the merits of average police officers, but these people actively harass them, as well as other public employees, and then claim they are being "oppressed" whenever their bullshit gets them in trouble.

It is quite obvious that you dont pay attention.

@yep. @Prole  ah whoops, I must have came off too serious and you made the mistake of taking me for someone who still gives a shit. It's more a minor modern miracle that I'm able to muster the lucidity to still weigh on this twaddle. There was plenty of shit going on before Occupy ruined the social climate for dissent that was worth something.

also cop question dickweed.

@Prole yeah, meanwhile youre just spouting nothing, dong nothing, and affecting nothing. At least people are doing *something*, unlike you. So you can sit there and talk big about "militant fighting" but in reality youre nothing but hot air, talking smack about people who at least have the balls to get off of their asses and put their money where their mouths are. Good luck in your arm chair, pussy.
