Real Talk 760 replaces progressive-talk station with...well, what the hell is it?

Dave Ramsey, who's coming to Real Talk 760 next week.
Earlier this month, in reporting about the firing of Gloria Neal and the impending death of the progressive AM-760 format at Clear Channel-owned KKZN-AM, we speculated about possible new approaches, noting along the way that business-centric radio "hasn't been markedly successful in this market for decades."

Well, lo and behold, the rebranded Real Talk 760 is sort of a business station...but also sort of not. And the almost total dearth of local programming makes it mighty unlikely that the outlet will suddenly turn around the aforementioned trend.

gloria.neal.facebook.jpg
Gloria Neal in a photo from her Facebook page.
Of course, AM 760 wasn't loaded with local programming, either: Neal, who helmed the morning show, was the only weekday personality broadcasting from here, with the other programs coming from syndicated sources.

We hear that Neal's ratings were hitting Clear Channel's goals -- but with the numbers for other programs lagging, her show couldn't prop up the rest of the station, which began as an effort at providing local listeners an alternative according to ex-Denver-based programmer Kris Olinger. In a 2010 interview, she said, "Our motives here had to do with us having three AMs -- and finding a format that works on the third AM can be somewhat challenging" -- a reference to Clear Channel outlets KOA and KHOW. "You've got sports, you've got business, but we felt, after researching the market, that progressive talk would be a strong choice, especially when you look at the makeup of the population in Colorado politically. It's a third Democrat and a third Republican and a third independent. So it made sense to give people who are progressive, liberal, what have you, a radio product that reflected their values."

Seems logical, but it didn't work. So now Clear Channel has turned to the rejected business approach, more or less. The syndicated Money in the Morning show, based in San Diego, is airing in a seven-hour block from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. Beginning on June 2, finance author Dave Ramsey will be heard from noon to 3 p.m., followed by consumer expert Clark Howard from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

real.talk.760.logo.jpg
The new logo for Real Talk 760.
In addition, the station is running two hours' worth of Tom Martino's show from 10 a.m. to noon. But while the self-proclaimed Troubleshooter, who just pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace regarding a December incident involving his wife, Holly, is locally based, he's also heard on KKZN's sister station, KHOW, at the same time -- and it's highly unlikely many of his listeners will change dial spots to check out the same material they can hear at a better-known, more powerful station. Hence, the show is basically a space filler.

As for the rest of the schedule, it has few ties to business programming at all. Syndicated radio psychiatrist Dr. Joy Browne is on twice, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again from midnight to 3 p.m. Jim Bohannon, on from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., is a general-interest yakker with a political bent. And TMZ Live from 11 p.m. to midnight is...TMZ Live.

How much energy is Clear Channel putting into boosting this hybrid concept? One indication is the station's Facebook page, which was launched on May 18. In the eleven days since then, it's garnered a grand total of fifteen likes, and the most recent post was shared on May 22.

As such, Real Talk 760 seems likely to make even less of a mark than did AM 760 -- but it'll be cheaper to run. And in these days of struggle for traditional media outlets, maybe nothing else matters.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

u stupid motherfucker.....the concentration of public airwaves into the hands of fewer and fewer corporations is the biggest culprit of the decline of quality of American media (not just radio)

For all the talk of freemarkets. Denver proper has more Progressives than conservatives, and the state has been blue in recent elections. AM 760 was hugely popular. Now there is not one single progressive radio station in Denver, and there are at least 5 conservative stations, to represent the minority? 0 for the majority (Denver area) 5 for the minority. Hmmm, what happened to freemarkets?

Martino is an ego driven ass....Gloria Neal was nothing compared to Sirota. They should have done something about her a long time ago. Such a boring show. Gonna miss the rest of Progressive radio though.....Clear Channel has killed off anything decent. Someday they'll be the ones out of a job and I'll dance.

I really miss Reggie Rivers on the radio. Is he still in the Denver area?

On what basis? He provides financial help that works? One of the most listened to radio shows in the country. He must be doing something right?

Wait...he's definitely not "mah boy." That offends me when people assume that because I am liberal that I am for the establishment. Don't assume. I'm against much of what the administration has done.

American media, all in all, is a fucking joke. The so-called "liberal/progressive" stations are just a tad less corporatist than their far-right counterparts but still walk the line for big business ...they just throw in a bit of faux outrage on menial wedge issues to distract their listeners from what is really going on with the state of political discourse in the country -- the gradual right-ward shift of the DC establishment, including ya boy, Obama. Of all the progressive pundits, only Sirota had the balls to tell it like it is and once in a blue moon, Ms. Maddow (when her salary doesn't depend on sticking to the Democrat playbook). The rest just simply have their rear ends up some random Democrat's rear end.

Years ago I paid a few bucks for a portable satellite radio receiver that hooks into the car radio and a boom box. Now I can get pissed off listening to all the progressive and rightwing talk I want, as well as relax to every conceivable music format. I paid a small one-time fee for programming, so I pay nothing monthly now. AM radio is ded, and FM radio is limited, over-compressed, and boring. Good riddance.

Liberals don't listen to the radio. Cause that's so 90s

Yep. It's iheartradio and NPR and podcasts here. It's a huge lie that progressive radio doesn't work. Have you SEEN Limbaugh's ratings lately? Furthermore, have you noticed the recent trend in conservative radio and tv where they're slowly taking on some progressive ideals? They know their medium is dying and that Americans are becoming more open-minded and caring...not as full of hatred.

What you mean Clear Channel the near monopoly of the radio world canceled the station that fights against monopoly style corruption... well thats not predictable. I am sure they were trying to kill it slowly for a while. Once David Serota left it was all downhill. Mario was a jerk and treated his audience like crap. Gloria was like sandpaper on my ears. Who hired those people? So glad that Turk and Serota went onto good things.

public airwaves....hmmmm-we were supporting the sponsors, at least the local ones -now all that support is gone-I just don't quite get why a megalith like Clear Channel wouldn't want to be making $$$ off of all different demographics

Well, I'll never listen again. Tom Martino? For real? And Gloria Neal was not good. Sirota was great, but he left. I'm pretty sure clear channel treats progressives like crap. All of the good, smart, informed ones left 760. Good luck with your business talk. There are at least two loyal listeners in this house who won't be tuning in.

Deck chairs on the Titanic, and what excuses will be offered when the new format fails drastically, then there is Randi Rhodes retiring from radio, along with Ed Schultz paring down his week day radio show to just one hour,a disturbing trend. Hard for the Righties to claim "liberal" bias, when 99% of Denver "talk" stations are of one ilk.

There are no businesses that want to advertise to progressives. Advertising dollars are much better targeted towards wealthy conservatives.

How do you market to progressives. "Once you cash your welfare checks, come on down to the Walmart at Colfax and Wadsworth, just try not to shop lift everything in the store"

Big money conservative corporations hate truth as much as they love their conservative cult propaganda.

Yeah I tuned out after Gloria took the helm and 93.1 comedy + spotify entered my life...it just felt more like general talk radio with relentless fawning callers.  I liked Sirota, I enjoyed Mario Solis Marich even if he was broadcasting from California and only coyly hinting at it while displaying regular ignorance and faux curiosity in Colorado politics.  He still had a lot to say and add to the conversation.

I liked the Air America days, which isn't even mentioned here and propped up the station for some time locally, I would say, before it deflated nationally.  I miss the Minority Report and Al Franken the most; Randi Rhodes got my interest early on and totally put me off her shtick quickly.

muhutdafuga

Yes, so called "Liberal" radio is really main stream, while right wing cult radio is radical extremism at it's worst.

jonesinaeus

Sirota seemed near-constantly outspoken to me, particularly about the drone strikes, economic policy changes that never amounted to anything, Wall Street regulation, etc, in fact it seemed like he needed a specific conservative outrage story to preoccupy him from going on this line of attack against the blue dog / moderate democrats too often.  I think maybe his listeners got sick of hearing it (I didn't, he's in a special pantheon with Greenwald and Scahill to me) and he ended up on the other B/S show because he got to beat up on a conservative caricature rather then focusing his sights so often on the democrats.

@muhutdafuga Oh, wow....that's surely a measure of success....one of the limpdick hosts that had an audience of 4 stole an election in MN (don't worry, he'll be gone soon). Of course to economically-challenged leftists like yourself, you wouldn't know success if it hit you in your mouth-breathing statist face. And libs working? HAHAHAHAHAH. And you were obviously "TOO" busy being a parasitic and traitorous slug to get an education, you fuckwit.

muhutdafuga

@stanley1 By the way, let's address stealing elections:  Reagan committed treason by conspiring with the iranian hostage takers, delaying the release of kidnapped Americans.  In exchange, Reagan, sent them military equipment.  Candidate Nixon conspired with the North Vietnamese to prolong that war, lying that he had a better deal for the North.  I guess his eventual surrender qualifies!  Bush, who lost the 2000 election, was appointed by the band of idiots.  No, not the republican party, the "supreme" court. Yet you stupidly lie about stolen elections.  You either have romnesia, a STD transmitted at C-PAC, or you are a liar, which is a given since you are a radical reich wing nut, or are stupid, which again is a given since you are a conservative cult follower.  If you don't understand "cult follower, have a trusted adult, or better yet, a good American read you "Conservatives Without Conscious" by Republican John Dean.  I know conservatives sit on their candy asses all day listening to fauKKKs, but try reading and becoming educated.

Q:  What do you call an educated conservative?

A: A Liberal, aka a GOOD AMERICAN.

@fishingblues @muhutdafuga @stanley1 You really are an idiot.  You are never on topic, you say stupid crap.  You have as many fantasies about good Americans as you do about molesting children.  Since we're off topic, how about this:

Republican pastor Mike Hintz, whom George W. Bush commended during the 2004 presidential campaign, surrendered to police after admitting to a sexual affair with a female juvenile.

Republican legislator Peter Dibble pleaded no contest to having an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

Republican advertising consultant Carey Lee Cramer was sentenced to six years in prison for molesting two 8-year old girls, one of whom appeared in an anti-Gore television commercial.

Republican fundraiser Lawrence E. King, Jr. organized child sex parties at the White House during the 1980s.

Republican lobbyist Craig J. Spence organized child sex parties at the White House during the 1980s.

Republican Congressman Donald "Buz" Lukens was found guilty of having sex with a female minor and sentenced to one month in jail.

Republican fundraiser and Bush pioneer, Richard A. Delgaudio was found guilty of child porn charges and paying two teenage girls to pose for sexual photos.

Republican activist Mark A. Grethen convicted on six counts of sex crimes involving children.

Republican campaign chairman Randal David Ankeney pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child and was arrested again five years later on the same charge.

Republican Congressman Dan Crane had sex with a female minor working as a congressional page.

Republican activist and Christian Coalition leader Beverly Russell admitted to an incestuous relationship with his step daughter.

Republican Judge Ronald C. Kline pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on his home computer.

Republican congressman and anti-gay activist Robert Bauman was charged with having sex with a 16-year-old boy he picked up at a gay bar.

Republican Committee Chairman Jeffrey Patti was arrested for distributing what experts call "some of the most offensive material in the child pornography world" - a video clip of a 5-year-old girl being raped.

Republican activist Marty Glickman (a.k.a. "Republican Marty"), was taken into custody by Florida police on four counts of unlawful sexual activity with an underage girl and one count of delivering the drug LSD.

Now this is hilarious.  The mutt is so desperate for affirmation that he/she/it creates an alter-ego to tell her she is wonderful.

Tell me mutt, is your alter-ego also a bull-dyke or did you created her normal?
