More photos below.
Denver has a reputation for being affordable. But is that changing? The financial site HSH.com has come up with a list of the salary you must earn to buy a median-priced house in 27 cities across the country and Denver finishes among the ten most expensive -- although it could be worse.

Look below to count down the photo-illustrated top (or maybe we should say bottom) ten, featuring HSH.com data and text -- and click to check out the original post.

Number 10: Miami

miami.skyline.jpg
Average home price: $259,000

Average monthly payment: $1,393.80

Salary required to purchase a median-priced home: $59,734.23

The weather during the first quarter of 2014 was pretty untenable in the Northeast and Midwest. Luckily for the residents of the Miami metro area, not only was the weather warm and sunny, the housing markets continued to improve as well. Over the last year, home prices in the Miami metro have been trending upward like its sister-cities Tampa and Orlando. Florida has a long way to go, but it's getting there.

Number 9: Denver

denver.county.colorado.screen.capture.jpg
Average home price: $288,400

Average monthly payment: $1,397.49

Salary required to purchase a median-priced home: $59,892.46

Denver has been known over the past few years as a stable housing market--one that never rose too fast or fell too hard. But that stability is beginning to be replaced by fast-moving seller's market. Quickly rising home prices are prompting more sellers to list their homes. And why not, Denver-area Realtors are reporting that their homes are some of the fastest selling homes in the nation.

Continue to keep counting down the ten most expensive cities to buy a house.

Denver affordable? Are you fucking kidding me? I had to move when my landlord wanted $750 a month for a goddamn 300 square foot apartment.

So before you sound like a dumb ass do your research, you can't just move in somewhere for $600, and I forgot the $35-45 app fees, each time u apply for an apt

Michael Roque, well that's great the rent is $600, but that don't include deposit, and first and last month's rent so that would be $1800 , my bad I was over shooting it by $200

I left The Bay Area in 2005 before the meltdown. Bought a pop top in Wash Park that we sold and just bought a new home in Lo-Hi. Still a lot cheaper to live here than So-Cal or Nor-Cal.

Being from Orange County, CA I found it to be much cheaper here. And you get more bang for your buck.

Being from Orange County, CA I can tell you that for your money, you actually get more here for less.

$2000? Where are you looking? You can get a 1 bedroom or studio of Sherman in Cap Hill for $600 a month. $2000 will get you a 2 bedroom in LoDo.

There's a thing called inflation. That needs to be taken into account when talking about the rise in prices over 2 decades.

Most of you here need to find better careers. To get angry at the Affluent is really pathetic.

$460,000 for a house that was at 225k, less than 20 years ago. WOW, indeed.

It doesn't help that our inventory is at an all-time low and therefore people are offering/paying WAY more than a home's appraised worth in order to ensure they get the home. We may, indeed, be heading towards another bubble

I live in LoHi and my rent is way more than it was in Downtown Chicago. Not to mention, the place in Lohi is way smaller and not as nice (even though it's new). I feel your pain.

South Florida is the only tropical part of the contiguous United States, and the article above says Denver is more expensive than Miami, so what are people nitpicking about?

I am homeless because I can't come up with the $2000 it takes to get an apt here, when I first moved here 11 Years ago , rent in Caphill use to be cheap now untouchable, who can afford rent when people make $8.00 an hour? I have a job and get disability and still it's not enough

Way to expensive we rent and the rental prices are outrageous!!!!

Loghome Finishing

even worse is no one can afford to maintain their homes. We do log home maintenance in the mountains and no one has a penny to pay for the upkeep anymore

I disagree. Denver's quality of life, less taxes, restaurants, access to the city, in my opinion are better than Cali. 4 major sports franchises within walking distance of eachother. I lived in Nor Cal for 32 years. Unless you make 1 million dollars you don't get to go to Santa Cruz and San Fran very often.

Sadly, check the inflation rate on goods and services over that 22 year period. 100% increase in real estate is less than 5%/year WOW.

That's why I'm lucky my dad is my landlord! Paying 600 a month less in rent than I was at my last place in Lakewood. It wasn't my dream to move back to Thornton, but serenity and peace of mind is priceless! Before we moved back here, I was seriously considering moving to a different state just to escape the ridiculously high cost of living! How can you sleep at night when you can't pay your bills or keep food on the table? Don't even get me started on the yuppie migration that happened in north Denver aka the highlands. My mom lived on 38 th and Osceola when I was growing up and it was always my dream to buy a house there, but now you need a trust fund or law degree to buy a house there! I can barely stomach driving through that old neighborhood without wanting to vomit. Gtfo you goddamn yuppies! P.S. that's from a REAL native of Colorado! Nobody likes you Californian hipsters!

I've lived all over the country. Denver is by far the most expensive place I've lived besides Vail. Denver rent and real estate is getting out of control and starting to match prices up in the mountains. That's effing ridiculous.

Just FYI, I lived at the Illinois/Wisconsin border & paid $500.00 per month heat & water included. 940 sq. ft 2 bdrm, jobs pay much more plus great benefits with no tax on food" Moving back shortly"

Too expensive with a huge remodeling ahead after the purchase. Or the remodel has already been done but the house needed it and still to expensive

Likely no bubble, we have a few years. Interest is low enough and it sure beats renting!

Denver's always wanted to be an upscale Yuppie destination, so I don't see why people are suddenly shocked...

Gotta hit the rural suburbs outside of Denver. I will never live near a big city again.

20,000 buys you a very nice smaller home 2bed 1 bath on a beautiful lake..no police..not even a stop sign..20 min to town..a very happy place..

Getting effing ridiculous.. I feel Denver is getting too big for it's britches with the Cannabis craze and inflated revenue. I already know people that are moving away due to rent or not being able to find a house to purchase that is in their budget. Denver needs to be careful or they will find themselves with nothing because legalization or medicinal use for the rest of the country is just around the corner and all this extra revenue will be out the door and in another state.

I think it has gotten crazy expensive once you hit kinda North Denver and houses off of like 285 near the highway. Generally from what we have seen it really depends on where you want to move and what you are looking for and how much it is worth to you. It is a sellers market for sure. We just closed on a home and it was only up for like 5 days with 3 offers. Houses are selling like crazy probably because it is getting so expensive to rent. For what we would pay in rent we pay to own. You just really have to be willing to look and take your time to find the good ones!

I just looked at a house in Lakewood that's only 1500 square feet plus a finished basement that's a ranch style and going for $360,000. I'd say it's gotten out of hand again and we are headed for another bubble. Bad time to buy.

It was a real estate related article. I offered my services. In my state it is appropriate to learn the lay of the land.

Over priced! Lousy pay rates' even if a person has years of experience, it means nothing here! Along with a stupid way of calculating car registration & plates' beautiful state but run like a bad business!
