Reader: The homeless on the 16th Street Mall are a menace and keep me away

Our post about an advocacy group arguing that a plan to hire ten new police officers to patrol the Ballpark neighborhood, LoDo and the 16th Street Mall essentially criminalizes the homeless inspired a lively back-and-forth between folks with very different views. Here's a post from a reader who feels something must be done to address the issue.

Stephen Felt writes:

The homeless people are a menace on the 16th Street Mall and the main reason I stay away from it. The police have to do something about them, they're obnoxious in their begging for money and food. Last time I was there, for the music festival, I was accosted several times by beggars looking for money and guys asking for my leftover food.

Handouts will only allow them to continue their sad, pathetic lives.

A good hard kick in the ass is the only thing that will send them on their way towards a productive life.

The worst president in modern history cut funding for mental health services, leading to most of the problems we see today.  There were consequences when reagan cut services for the poor and mentally ill so he could cut taxes for the filthy rich.

You are correct. However I've never met anyone in my entire life that's had to "actually" struggle have no sympathy for someone else who IS struggling.

A news investigation revealed that most of the ones we have here are sex offenders. Most. As in a clear majority.

We need solutions to deal with the actual issue of mental health care, health care, addiction, housing ect.

If you're from highlands ranch or anywhere that isn't downtown, and you are preaching here about how they have a right to be there, email me your address. I will drop off 4 on your street in the morning.

Hayley, your compassion seems limited to homeless people. Grow up again.

Hayley, You clearly live life in a very tiny vacuum. Your not having "experienced" harassment doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I've never been shot either, but it still happens in the world and without my seeing it personally. How long do you get to "experience homelessness" before you're making a choice to be homeless? Is the rainbow family (now panhandling their way collectively through Colorado on every corner) some of these downtrodden that you speak of? Or are they just hippie shit bags taking handouts because they are enlightened? Grow up "mate." Your opinion and experiences do not stand alone as fact.

Yes! Get rid of them all. They make downtown an embarrassment.

I have to say i hadnt been down there and hung out in a while..and boy it is nasty..its been taken over by homeless and meth heads..all ages and all walk of life...its a Mall right ..yet they wouldnt let the homeless hang out in an indoor mall..alot of them are transiants enjoying our marijuana laws..when we passed the alley ways it smelled like urine....i dont pretend to know where the homeless should be able to stay..

Old subject, same dead end solutions, nothing will change and nothing will get done. Homeless, house less, jobless, tooth less, key word is less and unless we build more shelters this will always be a major problem

Herding the homeless. Not a good job Denver and Reagan did them all a disservice.

Economy needs to be fixed . . Homeless people didn't make the recession or the depression happen. I live in florida remember not there where you all are benefiting from cannabis legalization. There has been no reprieve here since 1999.

I grew up outside of Philadelphia where the homeless problem is much worse than Denver. But I've seen too many vagrants on the mall that harass locals and tourists until they give up and give the bums money or food. Nobody should have to endure this sort of pressure from people that are threatening to spit on them or worse. I give annually to homeless charities and would like to see the people who want help to find help. And I've asked many homeless person if they would work for me but repeatedly was told "no, just give me your food or money" so I have no love or respect for most of them. Call me whatever you want but once you get harassed by these people you will sing a different tune.

When I owned my Mexican bar, I took in a homeless Immigrant and his two kids. His wife died crossing over. It was a stretch but worth it. I have taken in many homeless over the years, as a matter of fact, my ex husband who got hit in the head by a mugger, and got a brain injury has lived with me for the past 5 years and I gave him his own room etc. It is a stretch but that is what makes us human

Don't blame the homeless blame the federal government for not housing these people and giving all of our tax dollars to other countries that hate us

If you really want to help start with youth drop in shelters. Sox Place. Urban Peak. The youth need the help they may be runaways or foster children but something happened to them making them choose to be out there instead of home those are the ones that need your help

Good to hear you got your shit together and are no longer homeless. I was homeless too for about a year.

Once you've been down and without you look at life and people differently. If you haven't and you judge with such a frozen heart, well then, you might experience those things one day.

Christine Smith

Well said Devin! Don't expect an intelligent response from Heather, she seems only good to tell people her simpleminded, absurd opinion, but not offer any helpful responses to the actual problem at hand.

Katherine Anderson Carpenter

I was one of them. I was able to get off that mall about four years ago. All the programs and youth drop in shelters are all right there by the 16th street mall and that is why we would all congregate down there. Homeless people only stay where their resources are and there is nothing wrong with that.

i a sorry but we do need to help our homeless populations here in the US...

Yes it upset me to see people sleeping on the streets because we send so much money over seas to help them but we can't help are own people.

He's actually lying about committing a crime dear. Kids like this make things up to feel good about themselves and compensate for their insecurities. You can't take what they say seriously

I wouldn't care about the homeless if they didn't bug me. If they do a performance with a bucket on the floor for tips, I'll drop a buck. But trying to make me feel sorry for them with their depressing signs is pathetic. They're lazy as fuck and that is why they are there.

Rachel Thomas

I think the homeless become scary when they don't want to realize there are failures in the system. The individual has a choice to make something of their life. It becomes harder when you have had a moment when you cannot provide for yourself, and no one else will help. That is the moment that people snap and loose themselves depression. I think we need to research the problem, and stop bitching about the symptoms.

Jo Se Ph
Jo Se Ph

Your negativity says you're at the bottom now. As far as homeless and struggling go ehhhh if that was true you'd be more apathetic towards real homeless and people with struggle. Don't act like Legen Dairy..you don't need to make up stories on FB to get friends just be yourself
