Marijuana: Littleton City Council takes step toward banning retail pot businesses

The Littleton City Council at last night's meeting.
Colorado voters may have favored legalizing the sale of recreational marijuana, but not every community wants it.

Last night, the Littleton City Council voted 4-3 for an ordinance that would prohibit retail marijuana businesses there.

During a first reading, Mayor Phil Cernanec, who opposed the ban, explained that in order to enact the retail pot prohibition, the council needed to proactively present a new mandate and vote on it or decide on extending the moratorium the city placed on recreational pot businesses, which ends in October.

There was no input from the public at last night's meeting. A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for July 1.

Council member Bruce Beckman, seen in a photo from his campaign website, voted for a ban.
Council members Bruce Beckman, Debbie Brinkman, Bruce Stableman and Ronald Stein supported the ban, with Peggy Cole, Jerry Valdes and Cernanec dissenting.

The ordinance bans retail marijuana cultivation facilities, marijuana product manufacturing facilities, marijuana testing facilities and marijuana stores in Littleton.

Here's how each of these entities is described:

RETAIL MARIJUANA ESTABLISHMENT: A retail marijuana store, a retail marijuana cultivation facility, a retail marijuana product manufacturing facility, or a retail marijuana testing facility.

RETAIL MARIJUANA STORE: An entity licensed to purchase marijuana from marijuana cultivation facilities and marijuana and marijuana products from marijuana product manufacturing facilities and to sell marijuana and marijuana products to consumers.

RETAIL MARIJUANA CULTIVATION FACILITY: An entity licensed to cultivate, prepare, and package marijuana and sell marijuana to retail marijuana stores, to marijuana product manufacturing facilities, and to other marijuana cultivation facilities, but not to consumers.

RETAIL MARIJUANA PRODUCT MANUFACTURING FACILITY: An entity
licensed to purchase marijuana; manufacture, prepare, and package marijuana products; and sell marijuana and marijuana products to other marijuana product manufacturing facilities and to retail marijuana stores, but not to consumers.

RETAIL MARIJUANA TESTING FACILITY: An entity licensed to analyze and certify the safety and potency of marijuana.

Littleton has four medical marijuana dispensaries that will remain open. The ban only covers recreational shops.

Boo!  Hiss!  Shame on the intolerant four!  As though Littleton (Columbine) doesn't already reek with negative connotations in the eyes of the civilized world, now the council is draping a new layer of small-mindedness, irrational fear, and ignorance on the community.  Citizens of Littleton, pressure your council to do the right thing and vote no against banning recreational marijuana sales in Littleton!

Wow, you really aren't the brightest bulb on the string are you? Never used it eh? No medical use? How much crack have you smoked to become that f'ing willfully ignorant of facts? Seek help immediately.

Waste of time. Seriously. Nothing better to do than to go against retail pot businesses? Lame on every single level.

We need new government and councils we need some bud smokers in government that isn't afraid to show it the people would support them.

They have a right to do this, and I agree. Screw the tax base, the whole thing was half assed from the start. The fine details were created in a frenzy, after the bill was passed. The whole edibles side of it is causing pandemonium in schools, and is dangerous because either people cannot read, or the crap is created wrong. Kids can ingest pot right in the classroom, the minute the teacher turns to the board, or lets them out for lunch. Heck, we have had kids with vapor pens in class. They get busted because of the steam. It's easy to catch them. Ingestibles are IMPOSSIBLE and dangerous.

But do these towns still benefit from the taxes? If so, something should be done.

Gun stores are banned in Denver city limits, Boulder banned smoking cigaretts and glutten, Greeley was the first city to ban smoking in city limits years ago, There are cities that have banned liquor stores all over the U.S. What is the big deal. They are not banning the use of pot in your own home. Just the sale in the city limits. Why is no one bitching about the crime it is to collect rain water. There are worse things out there and i read though some of these comments and some of you live your life like IF I CANT GET HIGH FOR A DAY I HAVE NO REASON TO LIVE. Dont throw me that medical shit eather. Admit it. You like to get high. Good for you have fun. But dont be treating this like its the end of the world. Your realy going to boycott a whole city that you probably never even passed through in the first place. There is bigger shit going on in the world and in this state. Why dont you have the same fight in you when it comes to water. Or growing produce in your own front yard (crime). Some cities will fine you for having a car with flat tires sitting in your driveway.........no joke. Or your grass grew higher then 4 inches.

What the fuck is wrong with them. This is Colorado we love our pot or are at least tolerant of it so we can take the money from the taxes and put it towards the schools.

Hey Littleton, what are ya gonna do about the pill popping pedophiles? What about the DUI hit and runs? I think you have more to worry about then recreational weed!

Are they banning local dealers too? Cus last time I checked teens can readily get pot from their high school friends easier than from a recreational store. You folks are doing this ass backwards

As the rest of us struggle to take two steps forward, it appears these mouth-breathers on the Littleton council are dead-set on taking two steps back.

What people want?  If people wanted to shave your head and make you walk down the street naked, would you like for the government to pass THAT into law?  That's why we have a Representative Republic as a form of government, not a Pure Democracy.  Your rights are protected from a bullying majority rule.

Please, go to an antique store and find a book on Civics... and READ it.

You whine like an infant who has lost her pacifier.  All you know is what YOU want.  You are a spoiled brat.  Welcome to the world, Sweet Cheeks!  Now, grow the hell up!  I mean... DAMN!

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

Why?

The Liquor Lobby wasn't stupid enough to BEG the Government to TAX and REGULATE alcohol, then propose a constitutional amendment which would give every City and County the power to COMPLETELY BAN alcohol sales ... like the clueless bong-sucking stoners did with that festering turd A64,

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

The WILL of THE PEOPLE -- via that idiotic A64 which fools like you promoted and voted for -- gives EVERY CITY and COUNTY the authority to COMPLETELY BAN marijuana dispensaries if they so desire.

Were you too stupid, or too lazy, to read A64 before you voted for it?

@PoliticalFreaks  If you voted for A64 you voted to give them that choice...to regulate marijuana at their discretion.

YoMama

Yes.  They WERE too stupid.  They heard the work MARIJUANA and thought, "Hell yes!  Let's vote for that!"  DAMN!  It's like Obama Care.  They had to pass it before we knew what was in it...
