Reader: Pot edibles hater Maureen Dowd should stick with what she knows -- booze and pills

Maureen Dowd.
Our recent post about New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd's bad experience with pot edibles, which she suggested be stamped with a skull and bones (maybe a joke, maybe not), got a lot of folks talking. Here's a comment from a reader who thinks Dowd may be better off using substances that are more familiar to her in the future.

Shari Walsh writes:

Edibles are an alternate way to consume marijuana. On the ones I have purchased, there is an advisory to wait one to two hours for the effects. There is also a guide on what one portion is and the dosage of THC in it. I can read. It seems pretty simple to me. Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker. Maybe she just stick to what she knows...alcohol and prescription drugs.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

I bet she had altitude sickness, and blamed the edibles exclusively (and probably wouldn't know). But it is agreed that some drugs affect people very differently.

Don't be too hard on us old farts.  When I first smoked in high school 35 yrs ago, I recall having a good high.  I tried again recently and nearly went bat-shit from the paranoia - bad trip.  It's my understanding that my weed of long ago had nearly an equal amount of CBD and THC.  The CBD tempered the psychotic effects of THC and gave a very pleasant high.

These days, the CBD has been mostly bred out thus making the THC more potent even though the amount has stayed nearly the same.  Maybe Maureen had a similar experience.

She drank while on the edibles. Her opinions and comments are invalid.

If you are having anxiety when you are high on weed its because your "Jiminy Cricket" is kicking in and you are probably being confronted with some deep seeded issue you have been ignoring. Keep smoking, keep confronting those demons, and eventually your anxiety will go away! Yes weed is for everybody! Unless you just wanna keep that shit buried forever!

I agree with that comment. She's not as bright as what she puts herself to be.

I don't believe her at all...I think Maureen is a freakin liar sensationalist trying to put out her own propaganda!!! It was like a reefer madness 2: reefer treats. I agree with the original remark, maybe she should stick to the poison she enjoys, alcohol and prescription drugs https://twitter.com/irieladysing/status/474972434244698112

I totally agree that her comments about the brownie experience were way out of line. Maureen, when you get a quart of vodka DON'T DRINK THE WHOLE THING OR YOU MIGHT DIE. duh

I agree that weed isn't for everyone, I get paranoia and anxiety as well (I still smoke once in a while), but it's like sending a reporter to do an article on cough syrup, not reading the directions, drinking half the bottle and hallucinating. She's an idiot (in my opinion) and was a terrible choice to write this article. They could have picked someone who can at least read labels.

But when they are in a position such as a media influencer, it does matter... She's masking her inability to read labels (dosage) and mix/not mix substances while also painting with a broad brush as if her experience reflects everyone's experience. My bro tried an edible for the first time...got a little too high... Know what he did? passed out in front of the TV.. not whine on some podium like an obnoxious brat.

I remember the first time I got drunk when I was fourteen. We stole a bottle of gin from a friends parents and got so drunk that he had to be rushed to the emergency room because he nearly died and I was vomiting for 24 hours. Never had anything remotely like that happen in thirty years of using marijuana.

Good advice. Maureen Dowd is clearly clueless and set up her 'experiment' to get the result she desired: material for a controversial, but wrongheaded, column.

its not about being a pussy you fucktard. cannabis can really cause negative issues in some people. just because some people cant handle cannabis does not mean they are wimps or pussys. cannabis is different for everyone. and not everyone can handle the effects of cannabis.

Quit being such a neurotic pussy. Where is the outrage over all the REAL overdoses on pills and booze? This is not worth writing about. If you can't handle getting high, don't walk up those steps.

She also ate 8x the recommended dosage! I'm glad she had an awful experience!

I think her reaction was her own. I too have been experiencing anxiety and paranoia and panic attacks due to using weed. and that's just smoking it. people need to understand that weed is not for everyone. there are people who just cant handle the stuff. I personally can feel where she is coming from because I had similar experiences with weed. weed is falsely advertised. people say its this nice chill happy relaxing feel good thing, but so many experience the opposite with paranoia, anxiety, panic attacks. so I don't think she is all that much of an idiot

Yea, that stupid, Ivy League grad. She should stick to doing writing stupid Pulitzer Prize winning articles.

Clearly she is a pathetic loser because she can't handle an overdose of toxic drugs that the average Colorado stoner calls breakfast.

I really think she made it sound sensational because she needs to sell papers, no one would be interested in her staying in a hotel alone dealing with her insecurities and then passing out which is probably closer to the truth

Awfully uniformed for such a high-class journalist.

Obviously she did not do her research. For supposedly an "educated reporter", she showed her ignorance. The New York Times sent an idiot to write an article about mmj.

Luckily this fucking idiot was only experimenting with marijuana and not baby Tylenol or she could have OD'd and died. The only point she proved was that even a fucking dipshit can't overdose and kill them self with pot.

Didn't it change when she had alcohol with her edible? How can you do a study on the effects of mmj when you are drinking. She got Crunk and couldn't handle it.

She's in a different state of mind obviously. Low energy and more in sync with low energy toxic substances. So yeah, something as healing as cannabis is completely different than what she is used to so it probably does feel like death to her to be exposed to something that is the opposite of what her toxic lifestyle promotes. To those of us who embrace natural health and know its benefits cannabis feeds our positivity, peace and wellbeing.

She should have read "Marijuana Nation" by Richard Roffman.
