Reader: Being profiled for pot is the price Colorado has to pay for leading the way

pot.profiling.idaho.state.trooper.video.2.565x300.jpg
Our latest post about alleged pot profiling, featuring Idaho State Troopers pulling over three Colorado drivers for incredibly minor traffic infractions (but then finding cannabis), led to an intriguing debate about the practice. Here's the post of a reader who feels such law-enforcement behavior is to be expected given that Colorado's laws differ significantly from those in every other state except Washington.

Charlie Jones writes:

This is the price Colorado are going to have to pay the rest of the country don't agree with us. If you don't like it nobody says you have to.

Maybe, but I see it more as other states cashing in on our progress. Aaaaand ruining a lot of people's days.

If you're not ridin' dirty, who cares if they pull you over. Leave the pot at home people

I wish westword would stop trolling us with these reader comments and do some journalism of their own. I think this publication is ran by high schoolers.

It shouldn't be, but unfortunately it is and will be for a few years to come...

I caught the felony for pot in Nebraska. They pretty much ripped me out the car, searched without permission

still a civil rights violation. All states need to legalize and it won't be an issue.

Agree. Who cares, unless you are actually carrying it across state lines. Don't let the Green eyed monster get ya green!!!

No it's the price we have to pay because people can't accept change.

Theyre just looking for an easy arrest that will just add the fine money to their coffers. It's just easy to assume the pot thing with a Colorado license plate. It probably has nothing to do with the actual marijuana. They just know that sitting on the side of the road looking for CO license plates is easier than putting in the effort to stop real crimes.

They are probably looking for larger quantities than a joint since it is legal to grow in Colorado.

I guess it depends. If everyone from Colorado has weed in their car then their suspicion might be technically justified but it sounds like a civil rights violation. The bigger issue I am starting to hear about is that, now, Colorado is basically a huge legal marijuana field. Since every person is potentially a legal grower, you just have to find a way to get it to people in other states. All it takes is an organizer, ie, gang, cartel to figure out the logistics. Maybe buy some land near the Kansas border and dig a tunnel. I think this is a bigger motivator for pulling over Colorado people rather than, "get those hippies". Which is why we should push for legalization in every state. Ridiculously high taxes are not helping the situation either.

irony: while a state trooper wastes both his and the driver's time searching (or attempting to search) for likely nonexistent pot, a drunk driver plows through them all Murka

100 kilos of heroin just drove by them guys while they where looking for a joint, Tweekin mama's boys! I was in Wichita Kansas year ago stopped on the side of the road to let my dog out, next thing I know there's two sheriffs checkin Me out, since I wasn't doing anything wrong they didn't have any probable cause, it just made me really realize what a police state Kansas is! Hey they were stupid enough to vote in that right to work law! I'll stay in Colorado the land of the free!

Call me an optimist but I'd say huge tax revenue for our schools and a great economy are the price we pay for making sensible laws for adults.

Bullshit.  We don't "have to" pay a damn thing.  We the people of Colorado voted to amend our state constitution (twice) to allow our people to have cannabis with less fear from the police.  The rest of the country can go along or fuck off.  Oh, and this is not a fucking experiment either.

Thank you for your question.  Anyone that cares about the constitution will object to profiling.

@Wendy52601 ... where in the Colorado amendments does it give you any right to transport your weed interstate to jurisdictions that have criminal penalties against it?

Q: Why did Iowa raise the minimum drinking age to 25?

A: They wanted to keep alcohol out of the high schools.
