Susie Wargin joins Dave Logan at KOA, Dave Krieger fired

Back in April, we told you about longtime 9News sportscaster Susie Wargin's plan to leave the station after her contract expires in August in order to devote herself to real estate. Now, however, her career has taken another turn. Beginning this afternoon, she'll begin co-hosting the rebranded Colorado Afternoon News on KOA radio alongside Dave Logan, whose most recent partner, veteran newspaper columnist turned broadcaster Dave Krieger, was fired to make room for the new addition.

Clear Channel Denver executive Greg Foster revealed the move on Friday via the following tweet:

In addition, Wargin shared the following info on her Facebook page:
Every day I'm thankful for the people I've met who have given me incredible opportunities. From KTCL, KBPI, KOA & 9News, someone has believed in me. The result has led me and my family down an incredible path. Today I am very excited to announce that I am returning to 850KOA after a 10 year hitatus. Starting Monday, Dave Logan and I will host Colorado's Afternoon News from 3-5 p.m.... guess you could say we are kind of getting the band back together. I will continue to work on special projects and fill in at 9News, as well as build on my growing residential real estate career with RE/MAX. Thanks to all who have supported me in the past -- I hope you will continue to do so in the future!

A file photo of Dave Krieger during his days as sports columnist for the Rocky Mountain News.
Krieger exhibited a less exuberant tone in a tweet about the situation, but still managed to infuse the news with his trademark dry sense of humor:

As you'll recall, Krieger was a standout sports columnist for the Rocky Mountain News -- and when the tabloid folded in 2009, he was among the handful of well-known Rocky scribes hired by the Denver Post. But in January 2012, he took a fulltime gig at KOA as Logan's partner after the Post declined to work out a way for him to balance the two jobs.

At the time, Krieger told us his decision to sign up with KOA wasn't motivated by concerns about the long-term future of newspapering. "At my age, long-term does not exist," he said. "And what happens down the road to print journalism or terrestrial radio, for that matter, are long-term trends. I know old media is less well off than it used to be -- more endangered. But if I work for another ten or fifteen years, that'll be great. So for me, it was about what I wanted to do after getting up tomorrow. And I derive a lot of satisfaction from radio. I had a radio show in college, which is going a long way back, and I like the performance aspect of it. And Logan's been a friend of mine for 25 years. I really enjoy working with him. So this feels right."

Unfortunately for him, the ratings generated by the two Daves weren't what executives had hoped when they allowed Logan to go all-sports after the departure of his previous co-host, Lois Melkonian, who signed on with a station in Houston. Hence, the new concept, which will team Logan and Wargin from 3-5 p.m. on weekdays, rather than filling the typical 3-7 p.m. slot. The last two hours of the show will feature what the station describes as an "all-news presentation...co-anchored by Susan Witkin and Mike Rice."

This hybrid approach minimizes Logan's airtime and puts him in the position of broadening his focus beyond the fields of play -- and according to a Dusty Saunders piece in the Denver Post, he may not be too happy about it. But it's an undeniable win for Wargin, who'll have a high-profile radio slot to go along with occasional pieces for 9News. And if none of that works out, there's always real estate.

Send your story tips to the author, Michael Roberts.

The Sports Zoo was the best, and the Dave and Dave show was the only thing that has come close since. Colorado's Afternoon News is a joke, and totally unnecessary. Steffan and April do their thing well in the AM, and nobody needs an uninspired re-hash in the afternoon. What we used to get was premium entertainment and comedy while unwinding on "the ride home," but now it's not worth tuning in.

Nothing against Susie, but I want to throw my hat in there with the many many others who think the recent change was dumb move and a mistake. It's a shame, but I'll be tuning in elsewhere—even after 20 years of loyalty.

OMG, what?!  I love Logan and have enjoyed all of his partners including Lois, Hastings and especially Kriegs.  I spent 5 minutes listening today to the new format and that will be the only 5 minutes I spend listening.  Nice move Clear Channel.

I have tried to listen to the new show.  I cannot.  I am no sports fan  at all.  But I listened to the two Daves because their chemistry together made me laugh out loud.  I tolerated the sports stuff just because I so enjoyed the two of them together.  I know nothing about Susie but, I'm sorry, her giggles make me want to change the channel FAST.  If it was a news format, what not the two daves?  I no longer listen to KOA after Mike Rosen's show.

I feel as though I've lost two dear friends.  True, Dave Logan is still there but the new format is so alien to his personality that he might as well be a totally different person.  I gave it a try but I could not stomach it. The daily sports chat with Dave and Dave was something I came to look forward to with great enthusiasm. I'm sure Susie is a fine person but listening to this type of show is like staying home sick and watching the View.  Not exactly a sports enthusiast's ideal.  Guess I'll be listing to KFAN from now on.  Not the same as Dave and Dave but better than this new, totally inappropriate format.  I really think it's going to come back and bite the KOA Execs on the but some day.

So, Clear Channel replaced the best sports talk show in Denver with an insipid 2 hours of radio that is painful to listen too. I lasted 5 minutes on Monday before hitting the scan button on my radio. Silence, or having dental work done without Novocaine, is better than listing to this show. What a waste of Dave Logan -- one of my favorite Denver personalities. I like Susie, but she is no Dave Krieger. He is an exceptional journalist in a time when even an average journalist is hard to find. I hope he lands at another Radio station. If so, I will be an avid listener. As far KOA goes, there is really very little left to listen to on this channel. Time to re-program my preset radio buttons and find another station.

Clear Channel is horrible..Krieger rocked..Logan deserves better...Suzie is ok but no savior...will only listen to radio/koa when the Broncos or Buffs are playing, otherwise its SiriusXM and their great sports line up!

Anyone remember when KOA used to be a good station?  Now it's just radical right wing propaganda, run by clearchannel, who proves that you can be a big money conservative "news" outlet and still get everything wrong.  Wait, fauKKKs already proved that.

I wonder how she will handle Logan's severe halitosis?

Rockies, Broncos and the Sports Talk format with Dave and Scott and then Dave and Dave were the only reasons to listen to KOA. Now I will find Rox and Broncs elsewhere and listen to NPR. Clear Channel and Rupert Murdoch have destroyed radio nationally.

Dumb move. Replace a respected, veteran, no-nonsense, rational voice with a jock-sniffing airhead. And Clear Channel wonders why it's struggling. Because of dumb moves like this.

Way to lose more listeners, I think clear channel is trying to kill this station. They seem to want only syndicated content. The only thing I listened to was Dave & Dave.

She's awful. Her KBPI daze sucked, as did 9news. She Lewinskyed someone, again.

I can't STAND her. This is criminal. The only positive is that people won't have to look at her anymore.

I like Suzie Wargin. I am not a fan of Clear Channel in Denver at all. What they have done to the radio market in Denver is ridiculous...there is no talk to listen to anymore unless you are a conservative. Dave and Dave bridged that divide for me after Clear Channel gutted AM 760. I will now listen to KOA for one hour a day, where I used to for 4m and will have to send some cash to NPR, my new home of schizophrenic but smart programming in Colorado.

@cjmallory Similar to their foolish moves with 760.

The last time KOA was a great station was when Alan Berg was still alive.

Slamming Obama on a fascist station won't hurt your career, telling the truth would end your career with radical right wing clearchannel.

I listened to the show with the two Daves daily. Don\t like this new format. You have lost a listener.
