Breastfeeding pics on social media: Jeanna Hoch on critics, Facebook after account blocked again

jeanna.hoch.facebook.meme.565x300.jpg
A cropped version of a Jeanna Hoch meme seen in its entirety below, along with other breastfeeding photos.
Last month, we told you about Jeanna Hoch, who went public after Facebook suspended her account due to the presence of breastfeeding photos -- images the site explicitly allows.

Hoch's page was reinstated after the media circulated her story. But she was temporarily blocked from posting new content again amid charges from critics that she's a former stripper who only wants publicity. She refutes such accusations and spells out the reasons for her campaign -- one that extends beyond Facebook, as another woman's experience with Instagram shows.

As we wrote in our original post, Hoch posted the following photo on June 17....

jeanne.hock.facebook.photo.1.jpg
...as well as an image shared with 9News that the station strategically blurred for broadcast:

jeanna.hoch.9news.censored.jpg
Hoch was prepared for a reaction to such shots. On June 19, she posted the following: "Save yourself the time. You do not need to explain yourself before hitting that unfriend button. There is no need for a PM, a comment, or a hairflip. Buh-bye now!"

A short time later, she provided an update on the reaction: "Since yesterday, I have lost seven FB friends (that I know of). I feel so much lighter now that immature adults that can't handle a woman breastfeeding her baby with a bare breast exposed have removed themselves or been removed from my page. The reporting has stopped, and FB has not removed my pics. 'Nanny nanny boo boo. Stick your head in doo doo!'"

The celebrating stopped shortly thereafter, when Facebook took down her page, apparently because someone flagged one of the photos as "inappropriate." Hoch reacted by reaching out to 9News. The station then contacted Facebook about the decision, which contradicted the social media giant's own policy. A Facebook "help" section passage quoted by the station answers the question of whether breastfeeding photos are allowed like so:

Yes. We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful and we're glad to know that it's important for mothers to share their experiences with others on Facebook. The vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policies. Please note that the photos we review are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other Facebook members who complain about them being shared on Facebook.
After a second inquiry from the station, Hoch's page was put back online, with a Facebook rep explaining to the station that an employee had acted "by mistake."

Before long, however, this "mistake" was repeated again.

It's not full frontal nudity, you don't see her bush. It's a titty, not a dead body, children are harmed more by needlessly imposed ideals of shame than simple exposure to nudity. Look at Europe, they've turned out fine and they love nudity! full frontal even. The statement about a cry for attention is accurate, but there's more to it than her own fame. This discussion has evolved to critically asking us why we draw the line between breast feeding and nudity. Why is one "inappropriate" and another a beautiful act? Why does a woman who respects herself cover her body, if not because of the imposed ideals of a society in flux (for example Sharia Law)? Conversely, could a woman walk around fully nude and still respect herself? Could you? These questions bolster a more noble cause than simply some T&A.

I'm all for breastfeeding in public, just have some decency and throw a blanket over your shoulder. But why feel the need to post it on Facebook? I get its natural. I breastfed my daughter as well. But taking a shit is also natural. Once you post something on the internet it's there forever. Do you really think when your child grows up they're going to be proud of this?

Wanna be able to post whatever you want online? 1) Build your own website, pay for hosting, create a disclaimer that there will be nudity. Or don't. It's your website, but it may be shut down due to lack of aforementioned disclaimer, but there's the option. 2) Allow Facebook to start charging you to create a profile. That way you can at least have some kind of case when they take a photo down. 3) Or, here's a concept, don't post so much personal shit online. Nothing is private on the internet. I understand that this is a display of some intimate and personal moment between child and mother, but you know what else is intimate, personal and beautiful? Sex. Pretty sure nobody will want to see a picture of two people making their baby on their newsfeed.

Reading these comments makes me laugh. The level of maturity, or lack thereof is astounding to say the least. So much for Freedom of Speech. We as Americans do not just "say" what we want now. We use social medial to express ourselves too. Nothing wrong with sharing those pictures for their friends to see. Best part is they found out who their friends really are. It was a blessing in disguise. Also Denver Westword, thanks for bringing the naive people out in Colorado.

He cares. But in a different way. A way in which he sees loads of boobs. And that's alright too. It's all natural. The problem is that every asshole has an opinion on social media. Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to hear from more aureolas.

Titties for all!!! But seriously, get over it. We've all got nipples. Some are more functional. Some are more pleasurable. But if you want your aureolas to get a little sun let the run wild. Free those titties!

The girl was blatantly just trying to be sexy. Of course mothers can be sexy, but she's laying there like "Jack, I want you to paint me like one of your French girls" with the baby barely in a picture. I think women should be able to be topless. It's beautiful and natural, however, this girl makes all women look bad!

Matt Smith

Bla bla bla it's natural yeah , but I don't think you wanna see me taking a piss or a dump that's totally natural to . So keep you tits covered please

Oh geez one of those people huh? It's called respect. My wife would never do this for two reasons. Both of which have to do with respect. 1. She respects herself and doesn't need to do something so ridiculous for attention. She gets plenty of attention at home. 2. She respects ME and knows that it would not only make me uncomfortable but that it would make me feel like she needs attention from others regarding her body which should never be the case if you know how to take care of your woman. Not to mention it's inappropriate. If she was just breast feeding then fine whatever. But this is way different than breast feeding in public which by the way I am totally ok with. This is full frontal nudity on a public forum.

Taking a crap is natural.  Having intercourse makes babies.  So?

Why should her man have any say? It is HER body. He can not like it all he likes.

Mark Hendryx

The whole point is that men can show their upper bodies including their nipples and women cannot. Why are we such prudes in this country? So then women started showing breastfeeding pics because it is literally the most natural thing in the world and for FB to find it vulgar is disgusting.

June Rodgers

Our children shouldn't be taught that nudity is bad or gross. So what if a child sees a book they most likely fed off one to begin with. A naked body is not lewd or pornographic. Are you ok with the kids being able to see all of the violence and animal torture allowed on FB? Violence=good nudity= bad is the problem.

June Rodgers

I'd much rather see breastfeeding and women's boobs in general rather then saggy hairy man boobs. Why the fuck is hairy man book ok but supple beautiful women's boobs are bad mmm kay

I'm not offended. I could care less. Honestly I'm more disappointed that this qualifies as news in the first place. But since you went there you tool this picture in question is not just someone breast feeding. She is fully nude and would be likely to get a ticket if she did this in public. Her profile is public and therefore viewable by anyone including children. Sick and tired of people like YOU.

This is a non-issue. Reposting other people's ignorance is not a news story, or even a good article. It just promotes and reinforces the minority opinions and gives fan to flame. Let it go.

These people need something to do. Honestly what kind of a weirdo wants to post pictures of themselves breast feeding? And if her man is around is he really ok with this? I would think not!

Definitely seen tons of women breastfeeding in public. doesn't bother me one bit. Its natural. Her lying in a bed looking into the camera with her shirt completely off and bra off and one breast completely exposed and just having the babe feed lying there is not natural, that is looking for attention. she isn't holding the child in a caring way or trying to make it look as if she is caring in this photo, this is " hey im breast feeding I do what I want" making a statement for herself and not for a cause. If she had had some of her breast showing and it was clear she was just feeding and someone else thought it looked kind and took the photo in her home, then posted it then she got banned then fine make a fuss. This is just for attention.

Facebook is offensive for blocking something so natural!

Lizzie Cook

I would say the baby feeding is the only thing not offensive in this picture. It's not a mother modestly feeding her baby... it's a naked lady, laying in bed, with her head resting on her hand like she's posing... who just happens to have a baby on one of the nipples. Modesty > Trash. Class it up if you want respect.

Breast feeding is natural sex is natural we all learn to do it .....a women should not ever have to cover herself because insecure, staring or perverted @$$holes I won't n if anyone ever has a problem I'd tell em to cover there own faces cuz I'm just feeding my child n it's not like it's doing any damage or putting anyone in danger if a persons comfortable with there body let them be besides it's no ones business ....nosey n old people need lives smh

Adriana Garcia

Giving birth is "natural", even more so than breast feeding... it's LIFE!!! HOWEVER, I'm not going to post a picture of my vagina and the crowning of my child's head on FACEBOOK!!! I breastfed all 5 of my boys and it is natural as well as beautiful, HOWEVER, it is not necessary to expose yourself or to breastfeed in plain sight. It's purpose is nourishment and to bond NOT for show!!!

Lizzie, these are YOUR LEARNED Beliefs. There is nothing wrong with nudity. You think there is, because you were told there is.  Especially in this instance, she is a mother, who has boobs, like we all do and she is feeding an innocent baby.
I have to assume you do not have children, or never breast fed. because you would know, you baby has to rotate often. So covering up with a baby that small is sort of useless.

Also Skin to Skin Contact is NATURAL. It is probably a big reason why a lot of people are selfish and narcissistic, because people do not even know what skin to skin bonding is, nor do they practice it.

I bet when you have your own babies, and give them breast milk, if you can, because a lot of people give up because it is hard work.. YOU CAN TALK ABOUT RESPECT.

vintagecorepatterns
vintagecorepatterns

@Adriana Garcia That is a good point, And personal choice. She made a stand because she feels there is a societal issue. And I agree, there is an issue. Especially if that many people felt the need to harass a woman raising a little baby.

However, it needs to be done, so there is change. So mothers do not have to feel the need to hide to feed their babies. What is exposing yourself? Seems like a dramatic term when you are really just talking about FEEDING A BABY.

This is a learned belief you have, patriarchal "stuff" that has been handed down through generations.

Should we be talking about mothers breastfeeding, or perhaps the real crazy exposure without any purpose the Mainstream Media bombards us with left and right. Pop Stars are more suggestive and "exposed" than this woman. But, I do not see anyone reporting me for posting Lady Gaga Photos, or other exposed singers or performers.

Not to mention, there are INSTAGRAM accounts with PORN on them. So YES it really upsets me to know that an account was deleted for posting photos of a woman with her breasts exposed and feeding child -

These women are changing things.
