Reader: Denver drivers are a f*cking treat compared to ones in L.A.

angry.male.driver.thinkstock.jpg
Our post about Auto Advantage's list of the ten cities with the least courteous drivers -- and Denver's finish as the ninth most courteous city for drivers -- prompted a debate about whether motorists in the metro area place on the politeness scale. The following reader places them well above those who take the wheel in a certain left coast locale.

Are you kidding me?!?! I'm from Denver and live in LA, and Denver drivers are a fucking treat compared to the people out here. In my 7 years here I've never gotten a courtesy wave. Seriously, not one fucking wave. And by the way, I'm shocked LA didn't make this list.

Ya, but the Denver cops are no different or just as bad as L.A. Cops!!

LA drivers know how to drive except for when it rains... Denver/Colorado drivers drive as if it's snowing all the time and in the left lane where they don't belong...

It's all a matter of perspective. However, when I've roadtripped from here to SoCal, I noticed that the driving was getting shittier and shittier. Not to sound like a stereotypical Coloradoan, but the same was true for Texas. Hell, I've driven in Boston--supposedly the worst place for drivers--and they didn't compare to Texas or California. Colorado is just normal in terms of driving, really.

Denver is a melting pot. From everywhere I feel california drivers are more patient. They.are ustue slow drivung. The men over 60 drive bad. And the men with racks if mtn equipment always ride the left lane super fast. Which they should not shit will fly every where. And women alone driving a huge suv or bug truck.should stop texting.

It is mostly if not all drivers who cause problems, I understand not knowing exactly where you need to be for a particular exit but that only accounts for a small percentage, most drivers are not paying attention or just dumb or both which causes traffic to jam up I have seen it over and over when I used to commute on 25 and 36 and in other parts of the country...........

Drivers in LA can't even manage a curve in the freeway! There are more traffic jams for no reason here than you could count. And god forbid it rains... Even a little.

Anywhere in California. I was in San Francisco in May and the damn freeway got closed down due to a shooting between two pissed off drivers. Road rage is REAL in Cali.

The problem is people like you knuckledraggers who don't know how to merge properly. Denver roads are some of the best in the Country when it comes to practicality and ease of usage. Not a native so I am not being byass. Bottlenecks happen when morons in the main lane won't allow the "merge" to happen at the end of the bottleneck. It's a really basic concept to grasp and apply for the ones who work with the other person, not against them.

I love it here, it's not a big deal, but people don't wave. I've even had a couple of weird looks for waving at people to say thanks. *shrug*

In 30+ years of driving and living in various cities across the US and Australia, I've noticed that geography and road layout play a very important role in how courteous drivers are. - the more automobile friendly the roads are - long on ramps, turn lanes, good signage, etc, easy access to alternate routes - then the easier it is for people to be gracious. - likewise, geography or road systems that funnel a lot of people into the same spot make it harder for people to stay calm. Denver, being on relatively flat terrain without a lot of imposing geographic features allows it's primarily grid system of roads to spread traffic out over a broader area than a place like the San Francisco Bay area, where traffic flow very often has to be funneled down to a limited number of bridges. That increases tension, as there are no alternate routes. - highways and roadways that are built to accommodate merging mean the residents learn how to properly merge. In Perth Australia, lots of round abouts mean that just about everyone there knows how to merge well. In contrast, places like Vallejo and Vacaville CA where the freeway on ramps are often ridiculously short means fewer people are skilled in the art of merging, which creates more traffic problems.

Drivers in LA have places to be. It seems like Denver drivers don't.

I would disagree. In L.A. they at least try to keep things moving in traffic, not here.

LA drivers at least know how to drive fast... Everyone here seems to be too high to hit the speed limit or correctly change lanes.

Denver drivers are bad. Can't say anything about LA but San Diego has better drivers.

I haven't been to LA for a couple of years, but last time I went I felt drivers here are worse. There seems to be a lack of common sense when it comes to drivers here.

If you're being compared to LA drivers that is not good, if you're battling with the champ you're a contender

hey, jackasses. see that thing a little bit up the road that just went from green to yellow? that's a stop light. and guess what? you're gonna have to stop at it. so don't be a douche and swerve in and out of 4 lanes just so you can be 2 cars ahead of me waiting at the light.

Eric Matthews
Eric Matthews

Only difference is drivers here will apologize (usually) after doing something stupid. The ones in California just feel entitled, but in the end both are carelessly dangerous. I saw a woman stop in the far right lane on Speer who proceeded to to cross all four lanes just to take a left turn she had missed, it is not worth your life for a left hand turn. She literally held up traffic and forced other drivers to stop. Could not believe how dangerously she was driving.

Denver has a merging problem. Merging bottlenecks are built into the entire highway system. Bottlenecks are 90 percent of the traffic jams in Denver. Fix it!!

Over the years I've had numerous road rage near-misses in LA while traveling on business.  It's not BS.
